This is a continuation of the trip that began on June 10th, 2008 in Capetown South Africa June 16, 2008 The entire group was ready to go, before the crack of dawn, at 04:15 AM. It was a quick ride to the airport and check-in was reasonably quick. We had an uneventful flight to Johannesburg, with a scrambled egg breakfast served enroute. In Johannesburg, it was a long walk to the International Terminal, where we had about 2 hours to browse through the numerous duty free shops. I went to checkout the Wi-Fi Hotspot, but needed to purchase a subscription to use it, so I passed on the opportunity. The flight to Livingstone, Zambia was quite cramped. South African Airways has squeezed in 6 seats across, in a plane that should only have 5 across. Those ... read more

I heard your retinas can detach when you go bungy jumping. I couldn't believe it - going blind just from jumping off a bridge! Whatever next? Armed with this knowledge, I made sure I didn't tell my Mum about my jump at the 3rd highest jump site in the world until AFTER I had done it. The jump was a thrill, I have a nice video of it too. It was 365 feet or 111 metres high (sounds better in feet, doesn't it?) and the girl that went before me started crying hysterically right when she was meant to do her jump. She kept saying "I don't want to do it - I don't want to do it" and had to be dragged to the edge. I have a feeling the guys didn't want to waste ... read more

It is official that I am certifiably crazy! Today I jumped off the bridge between Zambia and Zimbabwe not once but twice. It was exhilarating and incredibly insane. It was also something I have always wanted to do. I did a three in one package (cheaper.. always out for a deal) which included in the zipwire (flying fox), bridge swing and bungy jump. The first activity that I did was the zipwire across the gorge. I thought it would get my adrenaline going for the next two activities but boy was I wrong. The zipwire was a piece of cake and more of a fantastic view than scary in any way. I was strapped in, put my feet up and had a big push from behind to send me sailing across the gorge. It was amazing ... read more

From Stone Town we headed to the North Beaches of Zanzibar for some rest and relaxation. Our hour and a half drive took us to a resort sat right on the beach, Sunset Bungalows. It was a beautiful location complete with hammocks and the warm Indian Ocean. Bliss. Until the lights went out. The electricity not only failed at our resort and wasn't even localized on Zanzibar. It covered the whole of Tanzania. When we asked when we should expect the lights back on we were told they usually come back in 5 days or so! I guess that's Africa for you. Things never go quite how you would expect them to. T.I.A.! (This is Africa!) We continued with our R&R until the water ran out too. On the positive side the ocean was beautiful as ... read more

After Sth Luangwa we headed to Livingstone, via Lusaka... we stayed in a very cool hostel "jollyboys" where we had a reunion with our friends from flatdogs, also Anna's friend Vicky came to join us for a couple of weeks... in the space of a day we had the falls well and truely covered, at first on land... the falls can be seen from Zambia or Zimbabwe, from Zim you get the better overall view, from Zam you get closer... we didnt realise quite how close! as we approached we scoffed at the "gullible tourists" hiring the heavyduty raincoats and ploughed on... within seconds we were completely soaked... the falls kick up so much spray that it feels like you are in a torrential rainstorm! Was really cool and the shear power and size of the ... read more

The next morning (10th May) we left Casana and drove a few kilometres down the road to Kazungula ferry port to make the short crossing over the Chobe River to the Zambian border (we were suppose to travel through Zimbabwe but the FCO reccommended not to as a result of the election issues). The port was quite a scene! There was no organisation and it really wasn’t a port but just a muddy bank with a chaotic scramble of lorries, cars, vans and hundreds of people awaiting to get on. Our driver managed to make a few deals and get us to the front of the queue otherwise we would have been waiting weeks as there is only one falling apart ferry which is very slow. On the otherside in Zambia we had to wait ages ... read more

Off to Zambia - Vic Falls… A 3-day stop in Zambia to see Victoria Falls one of the 7 Natural Wonders of the World. And that it was, beautiful, absolutely beautiful! I stayed at the Zambezi Sun that was right next to the park. The greatest reason for staying here is the wildlife that wanders the grounds and the fact that you can walk right into the park as often as you'd like. Right outside my window there were zebra and velvet monkeys EVERYWHERE. You wanted to reach out and touch them but of course you couldn’t. Also crossed over to Zimbabwe and did an elephant ride, too much fun. Next stop…Denver, Colorado, USA (arrived 4/26/08) ... read more

The Zambezi and the glorious Victoria Falls are just breath-taking. The Falls themselves are the largest curtain of water in the world and words don't describe just how beautiful they are. The whole area is magical. Everything is so green and lush. Butterflies are in an abundance and it feels altogether other-wordly. Think Rivendell! Getting here was easy enough. We took the bus from Lusaka to Livingstone. I was very pleased we had organised bus tickets the day before. The bus station was heaving and we certainly would not have got a seat without our advance booking. Journey time was around 6 hours. It passed fairly quickly and was actually very enjoyable as it provided an opportunity to survey the Zambian landscape. It was interesting to see that not far out from the main towns and ... read more

So we are now in Livingstone, so-called after David the Scottish guy. There's a statue of him and everything. We went to Victoria Falls yesterday which was amazing - it's one of the 7 natural wonders of the world, apparently (I'm so going to win pub quizzes and trivial pursuit when I get back). You get soaked when walking across a bridge so Ross and I donned our "emergency ponchos" which made us look like demented American tourists. We didn't get wet though, so it didn't matter. I don't think I can really describe the Falls here - when I finally work out how to upload photos I'll put some on. We stayed in a hostel called Fawlty Towers for the last 2 nights. I was slightly disappointed when the staff turned out to be helpful ... read more
