We have visited the Falls twice in the last few days and they are mind blowing. The figures of 800,000,000 litres of water flowing over in one minute are just too much to take on board. So I won't talk about those! The Falls are in a National Park which you have to pay to enter, which is fair enough. They have laid trails that you can follow to get to the vantage points for viewing them. (These paths are of course fairly near to the edge of the opposite 'cliff', so my vertigo received some serious battering. I think it is being pushed into some sort of order, I did the walking and by the second visit I walked over knife edge bridge unaided and with my glasses on. Great achievement! Enough of that though.) ... read more

We have just had a lovely barbeque beside the pool, the food was bought in town and the difference in shopping on Chirstmas Eve could not be more marked. There was no commercial hype abouut buying Christmas 'things', so food was easy. I brought a packet of balloons to decorate the Brai area, we went down to the railway station to buythe charcoal and then after a swim started to ligth the fire and sort out the food. It was simple and delicious and we chattered with other groups of people which was lovely. So why aren't I asleep in my rent ready for tomorrow? I am terrified, that's why! However, I am going to do this. I have closely watched others returnig from the rafting trip, asked them questions etc and it seems to be ... read more

Sorry about the lack of pickies - I think I have sorted myself out, so let's try again!! Others watiing to use the internet, so not many words - for once!! Well, that didn't work - so i will leave the pictures until S Africa and a broadband connection. Sleep is proving to be quite important on this trip. Going to sleep in Africa is a totally different ball game: insects, frogs, bats and some birds all start to sing. Loudly. That is fine in the countrysde until the hippos start to laugh which makes me giggle and sleep becomes even more elusive. Here at Lawlty Towers, there is another sound effect that is rather shattering - the soiund of mangoes falling from the trees and hitting the corrugated iron roof. The first one sounded like ... read more

The original plan was to eat an authentic African meal on Christmas day, think of you all in the cold but, things have changed. My comfort zone is going to be severely rattled... I am going white water rafting. Yes! Doing something that terrfies me and on a day when I could be eating some delicious food and generally relaxing. So while you are tucking into the turkey, I shall be paddling like mad through some rapids, soaked to the skin and probably totally terrified. So please raise a glass to the madness, we shall be toasting the day late in the evening and I hope that I survive the Zambezi and its rapids! By the way - happy longest day - well at least it is here!! And you might be amused to hear that ... read more

Kayaking has allowed me to do, see, and just be in some really spectacular places. Today is one of those days. I’m laying on a rock in a pool at the base of Victoria Falls. As I look up I see nothing but water cascading down this magnificent waterfall. It is amazing. The only reason I’m here is because we put-in, ferried over to Zim, portaged and then paddled up under the falls. Only kayakers get to do this. Today I’m very lucky. Today was also my last day on the river. I decided that days of paddling is enough. My body is starting to hurt and I’m getting tired. But I will definitely be back to paddle again. This river is too amazing not to come back for. Today will also be my third time ... read more

No blog update for weeks and then two in one day. You lucky buggers. After our final leg of the journey we arrived in Livingstone. This was a bit of a shock to the sytem cos although not very big, it must have had the population of China. We stayed at the 'Waterfront' campsite which was by far the best campsite we'd stayed on throughout the trip. It still had that chilled African vibe about it but also hosted a lively bar and eating area. The swimming pool was massive and the showers worked!!! We also had internet for the first time so straight on to skysports.com to see what we'd missed. The night we arrived we were informed that an option for the nights entertainment was to partake in a 'Booze Cruise' on the Zambezi. ... read more

Not sure where to start this TR. I guess I’ll start with the bad --- 4 swims in 2 days. I swam rapid 13 twice, rapid 3, and rapid 4. Ok, got that out of the way, now onto the Zambezi River. The Zambezi Gorge is amazing. It is big water as big as water can get. You think the Mash Brothers and Keeney are large waves… those waves are the small waves that don’t even get mentioned when you paddle the Zambezi. This water is big, fast, exploding and boiling. One minute you might be cresting the top of a 1 meter wave and the next, the wave is gone and you are being sucked under by a whirlpool boil line that just appeared. Better brace and paddle and stay loose. No such thing as ... read more

Yesterday, I got up and caught the mini-bus to the ferry. Then across the border into Zambia... piece of cake. Spent the day at Victoria Falls. Words really can't describe the majesty of Vic falls. So I'll let the pictures do it. Here is the link to them I can say there was water on the Zambian side. The falls make Nicargura look like a small potatoes. I apologize that some pictures are fuzzy, it is hard to take a good picture when you are covered in mist from the falls. It didn't take us long to look at all the overlooks for the falls. Then we headed above the falls. In the dry season you can walk around above the falls and even over to Livingstone Island. Everyone wants to guide you but we went ... read more

Up at 3:30am (after setting my alarm too early for the elphant ride) I watched the sunrise and then Alisa and I set off for our elephant ride at 5:30! We were hoisted up onto mummy elephant Mashumpi and we set off into the forest. It was a really comfy ride and we were closely followed by her little baby elephant which was just a few months old- cuuute! The elephants smelled a bit especially afterwards when we were allowed to feed them!- talk about early morning breath! We trekked through the scrub and then crossed the river, some of the smaller elephants had to swim and the riders got wet! (Emma, you would have loved this- although the corn maze was fun too eh?!! x)... read more

Hi Folks, Intrepid explorers here. It will probably be easier if we break this down into a kind of diary format taken from our written travel journal. 30/11/06 - Start After a very early start we pack our things into the truck and set off on the adventure. We have a very long day of driving in blistering heat and arrive at Bushmans camp site near Kruger Park at about four in the afternoon. That was the easy bit, the hard work really starts now as we are allocated a two man tent and given the briefest of instructions, but after much grunting and sweating, the tent was finally up! For a girl who thought slumming it was the travel lodge, the bedding in period may take a while. The tent had one slight flaw though ... read more
