We left Jo-burg early on Monday following an extremely early exit from Rustenburg. We made the trip without any flat tires and returned the car without issue with plenty of time to catch our flight. We caught our flight on 1time Airlines to Livingstone, Zambia and met some good people along the way. First off, I know what you're thinking. Yes, I am serious that the airline was called 1time Airlines. Secondly, the flight was awesome. Third, although I wasn't looking, as with many of low budget airlines I have flown in the past, the flight attendants look like they are models (and they were named Nikita, Kristi, and Natasha - I literally felt like I was in a movie. Finally, the service - including the best in-flight airline magazine I have ever seen (eat your ... read more

May 29th and 30th Everyone was a bit lethargic in the morning, probably something to do with the cheap booze that they had served us on the sunset cruise the night before. I had stopped drinking after JollyBoys so it had to have been the cheap rum! We all had different ideas on how to spend our day in Livingstone, some of us wanted to go back down to the falls, some of us wanted to microlight, and some of us just wanted to enjoy our day around the pool. One thing that was for sure was that the truck needed to be cleaned before the other passengers began their trip to Cape Town. The six of us got that done in a very team driven exercise and then came up with a plan for the ... read more

May 28th Victoria Falls, otherwise known to the locals as Mosi-o-Tunya, or translated as “The Smoke that Thunders” is one of the waterfalls with the most water volume in the world. If you get a chance, look up some of the pictures with a Google Image search, and see what it looks like from a birds eye view. To say it’s impressive is a huge understatement. All of us had decided the previous day what activities we were going to do, after watching a informational DVD at Grubby’s Grotto. There are a ton of activities to choose from, bungee jumping, zip lining, gorge swinging, river rafting (Not possible because the water is too high), micro flights, helicopter rides, rhino and lion walks, the list goes on and on. Nicio, Justin and I decided on doing the ... read more

May 27th It was going to be a long day in the truck if we were to make it to Livingston by 5pm, so we all woke up around 7am to get our tents packed up and have breakfast. I actually woke up on time and was wiping the sleep from my eyes when Justin decided to give my tent an earthquake. Not the most pleasant of morning wake ups. We jumped in the truck and headed south towards Livingstone. Across the Zambian flat lands we cruised. We whizzed by village after village listening to our favorite music and reading our novels, some of us (Maya) even managed to make necklaces while pot holes took their toll on the truck! We stopped at a couple villages and towns to pick up snacks or use the bathroom ... read more

We spend the night at a campsite next to the Zambezi river (the river is very high - the campsite was flooded 3 weeks prior to our arrival). We spend our first night on a river cruise. This is commonly known as the booze cruise and it's apparent why; 2.5 hours of free food and booze. Fair to say we had a wobble stepping off the boat! The evening descends into dancing and swimming in the pool - most without a choice and fully clothed (although nakedness appears as the night goes on!). We head to no mans land the next day between Zambia and Zimbabwe (i.e. the bungee jump bridge). The first 'jump' is a hoist across the river; this is a quite an enjoyable experience as it allows time to appreciate the scene of ... read more

Africa entry number 2! After exploring and experiencing Johannesburg, we took a flight to Livingstone, Zambia for a few days before the start of our safari. We stayed at Jollyboys hostel in the center of the city and we arrived amidst some rain but it soon cleared up perfectly for our sunset cruise on the Zambezi river for our friend Brad's birthday. We took the luxury booze cruise on the Lady Livingstone and it was all you could drink - sweet!! All that with stunning views for $50. Money well-spent! We had a great time and the views were breathtaking. We immediately were able to see the spray from the falls and it's one of those places that you have to go to to believe it. I knew the skies in Africa were amazing but the ... read more

Its been a while since the last post which can be explained by varying proportions of laziness, business, and prohibitively expensive internet (I’m not sure how much satellite internet costs but when its up to $12 per hour there’s no chance I’m paying for it). I’ve been on the road for pretty much a month, living on a bus and in tents, a life style I could get quite used to, especially as the beer is nice and cheap, and there’s plenty of banter in the group and with the excellent tour leaders. Anyway, time to get down to business. We arrived in Malawi from Tanzania, and drove down towards the lake. Malawi seemed upon first impressions much more rural than Tanzania as we passed very few villages and no towns of note en route to ... read more

1 Mar to 6 Mar Livingstone to Ngepi - Travelling in the Wet Why would you travel through this latitude during the Wet season - especially if you have knowledge of what Wet seasons can be like? Well partly it is because you figured that it would probably be better to hit the Wet here than further north where the roads are considerably worse, but also partly because there is little other option than to hit a Wet season if you travel from North to South or vice versa. It is not such bad deal though. Not like trying to get around Kakadu in the Wet. The roads have generally been OK. Wet tents and flooded campgrounds are a bit exciting but livable - provided that you can get dry soonish. There is no doubt that ... read more

Feb 24  Day 40 Today we got up and had a slowish morning we were hoping the weather would hold up for us to go do our big air experience. Around 10 or so we caught a taxi to the bridge, where we had to walk through a small customs point to get on the bridge itself. After we signed our life away we were off. First up was the flying fox zip cord thing. It was nothing exilerating but a beautiful view. Then we were rifled through the bungy and the gorge swing. They were trying to push us through so they could go to lunch. I did the George swing first. It was actually a decent rush and fall. I lost my breadth abit. It hink it was 140 meters or something. Awsa did ... read more

Finally internet that is fast - sorry for the long delay in postings. ************************************************ We arrived in Livingstone Zambia on a British Airways flight (Boeing 300) that had 20 people...including crew if you can believe it. I am shocked they didn't cancel the flight. We arrived at Chanters Lodge, our home for the next 3 nights. This is no five stars, or any star for that matter. The hotel has a quaint garden and pool but the rooms leave something to yearn for. In fact, Ryan refuses to have a shower in our bathroom and you never know what sort of critter you are going to find or if your electricity will work, but the place is great to organized activities and meet fellow travelers. There is a huge disparity of accommodation here, you can either ... read more
