Hola!

Right on ... Round 2 On a bus to Livingstone ... December 21st ... I think. 8 hours later and 2 Apple Max deep we arrived. Found out the hostel was only walking distance from where the bus dropped us ... bonus ... even though some guy tried to give us a ride there for 10,000 kwacha ... wah wah ... lucky enough for us he was honest and told us "I'm not going to lie ... the hostel is walking distance from here." Even after informing us of the distance he still wanted us to get in and pay him ... stupid! Livingstone backpackers hostel was amazing! Pretty much a resort ... just way cheaper ... $5 a night ... not bad! We stayed there for a few nights including Christmas eve ... which, in ... read more

We have been told by enough people now that the Zimbabwean side is where it is at. Especially in the dry season as less water is coming over the falls and certain portions have no water coming over. It is a bit early but I paid for a 24 hour internet connection and I am not sure when I will be able to post again, both from a time and connection standpoint. In 3 hours we will be off to the airport, flying SAA to Livingstone, Zambia and then crossing the border to Zimbabwe. We made it to OR Tambo without a hitch, this time attempting the southerly route to the N3, but making a left turn onto M85 rather than continuing into Alexandra. We did so well we were quite early and did a little ... read more

Carol started off the adventure sports without Garry because he was too sick - or so he says, maybe just a little scared? The day started off with abseiling down a 53m cliff, a flying fox over a gorge, and last but not least, a gorge swing. For any of you who don't know what a gorge swing is (we didn't before we came here) it's kinda like a bungee jump but not as high and you are not tied to a rope by your feet, its more around your waist. Carol did the jump tandem - you can watch the video we uploaded and hear her scream. Before we got too into the adventure activities, we took a lovely sunset cruise spotting crocodiles, but mostly taking advantage of the free bar! The next day was ... read more

Hi again. I just got back from a trip to Livingstone, which is Zambia's tourism capitol as it is very close to Victoria Falls. Victoria Falls lie right on the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe and are one of the world greatest waterfalls. It was an intense couple of days, but sooo much fun! Last weekend the EduSport peer leader from Kalingalinga held a two-day workshop in neighboring Mtere. They do this every now and then, as it is part of building up a bigger alliance of peer leaders and including larger areas of Lusaka. The workshop lasted from about 8am to 3pm both Saturday and Sunday and included several topics, such as promoting EduSport and its projects, including "Kicking Aids Out!" and "Go Sisters". It was a very interesting workshop to attend and the peers ... read more

After one night in Kasane, a town on the outskirts of Chobe, with a bed and food not cooked on a campfire, bliss, we headed into Zambia. Kasane is the border where we crossed over into Zambia, via a small car ferry to take us the stones throw over the Zambezi river, into Zambia. On the Botswana side it was quite organised and straight forward, not so on the Zambia side. Chaos doesn’t even describe it, basically lots of people, huts and sheds which were customs, road tax, insurance, road tolls, and emissions tax all of which had to purchased. 2 hot, long, dusty hours later we were ready to head to Livingstone, the home of the mighty Victoria Falls. The falls are immense. It is the dry season here at the moment so they did ... read more

An amazing cultural day visiting Livingstone and Mukuni village. We were bussed from our hotel to Mukuni Village, a nearby African community of the Leya Tribe. There we were treated to a guided walkabout, and learned all about their culture and life in the village. Unfortunately foot and mouth destroyed most of their cattle a few years ago. Such a disaster is as devastating to a family as a total loss on the stock market. Cattle mean wealth in this tribe, as in many places in Botswana. Fortunately the village did receive an international grant to buy more cattle, but these belong to the entire tribe and not the individual families. Our guide John explained that it is very hard for a Leya man to get married because there is always a bride price of so ... read more

Farewell to Africa This morning we rose to the usual increasingly hot day, enjoyed a sumptuous breakfast at the Zambezi Sun buffet, and decided to take a leisurely walk around the grounds one more time before leaving for the airport. The Zambezi Sun and more up-scale Royal Livingstone share the grounds in an enviable location right on the Zambezi River above and at Victoria Falls. The property is also right within the Mosi-Y-Tunya National Park, and consequently zebra and giraffe (and who knows what else) roam freely on the property, grazing on grass and trees. A small pond on the property has a sign warning guests of crocodiles. The resort staff are very alert to families staying there, and quick to stand guard, keeping people away from the wildlife at a safe distance. As we walked ... read more

Bye Bye Botswana Today we traveled from Kasane, Botswana to Livingstone, Zambia across the Zambezi River. We had spent 8 days with wild animals and now we witnessed human commerce at its most competitive. There is no bridge across the Zambezi river but still lots of trade - many trucks waiting their turn for the one-truck ferry, several fast boats for walk-on transfers and some suspicious mocoro dug-outs. One group of dug-outs arrived from down stream and very quickly loaded gasoline, televison sets and other cardboard boxes, then immediately took off paddling fast downstream without any passengers - something looked not quite legal about their behaviour. Our transportation across the Zambezi was a 6 passenger aluminum speed boat complete with life jackets which we were told to put on. On the Zambia side we were greeted ... read more

The 7 hour journey from Lusaka to Livingston was an absolute doddle after some of the smelly , cramped, rattly journeys we’ve taken in recent times. For one thing, the roads in Zambia are infinitely better than those in Kenya and Tanzania …apart from one section just before Livingston. Anyway, we arrived at our end destination feeling relaxed and rested and ready to try as many of the extensive activities on offer at Vic falls as possible. So, Livingston is the Zambian base for viewing Vic Falls. Victoria Falls town in Zimbabwe used to be the main base but because of recent troubles, the Zambian side has prospered and grown. We stayed in a very cool backpackers called Jolly Boys (I can only imagine what sort of establishment this would be if it were in Sydney). ... read more
