hey all the internet here sucks ass so this will be a short one. weve survived the first few days on our own and are now in the south of uganda in a town called kabale. we were up close and personal with black and white colubus monkeys which was amazing. theyre so silly. were heading out again in a few days to go golden monkey tracking and cave exploring...talk to you all soon!!! It's Shannon now, I'm going to fill in a couple details. We stayed at this super cool community campsite the last couple days and it was awesome, apart from the monkeys we went on this huge hike to see these waterfalls that were absolutely beautiful. The campsite sponsors an orphanage and all the profits from the camp go back into the community ... read more

Hello everyone, How're you all doing? I think I'll keep on writing this blog in English, though Nina is back home, but I know at least some of the German readers will still follow the blog, and I think you'll prefer to read it in English instead of Dutch, right?;-) Yes, Nina went home on monday...By now I know that she arrived home safely. It's different without her. I'm not feeling bad with it or lonely, but it is somehow strange, and I miss her somehow...after 3 months of being together...But, I haven't got time to miss her too much, cause finally I got something real to do concerning my practical period! This week and next week the work is reading a lot. It;s really a lot, no joke! And than 17 May I will be ... read more

The Eye of the Gorilla We'd started in Nairobi, and we headed to the West Through Kenya and Uganda where the roads are not the best And we moved towards Rwanda, where it bords with DRC And the Congolese are fighting wars most devastatingly. But why were we approaching lands of war and Rebel Killers? For in these jungles live the world's remaining wild gorillas. Rwanda and the Congo and Uganda all are linked By a jungle where the mountains rise as populations shrink, And the next day we would trek to find some quite endangered creatures: The sultans of the jungle with the shaggy human features. The gorillas filled my thoughts that night, the sleep I had was fleeting They're the drummers of the jungle who keep Africa's heart beating. *** The next day, bright ... read more

It's been another busy week so far. We crossed the border from Kenya to Uganda and have spent days driving through Uganda's beautiful lucious countryside, with bright green rolling hills and rich brick red dirt tracks. It was a far cry from the dry ashy land of Kenya. A few of us decided to cross the border to Rwanda on Friday to see the Genocide Museum for those million people that died during the Genocide of 1994. We spent most of the journey reading up on the tragic civil war between tribal groups, the Hutus and the Tutsis. Hearing about the mass slaughter of thousands of people brought a tear to my eye. The immense sacrifice of human kind that took place here only 14 years ago is both sickening and heart-breaking. Everyone here is still ... read more

We all went to Kampala last weekend and picked up my parents! They were tired, but excited - it is my dad's 32nd visit to Africa! We went on a safari for a few days - here are some photos. Uganda is really beautiful! We saw many tea and sugar cane plantations, rolling hills, high mountains, grasslands, and the Rift Valley. Nice time! ... read more

Monday This day we began moving from Kasese at the hotel in the morning to go for the game drive in Queen Elizabeth National Park. QNP has hundreds of various animals but it is always luck if not coincidence to find one animal - the KING of the jungle, the Lion! After four attempts I have not been able to get lucky, only this time I was so unlucky to see the back of a leopard! We saw Uganda kobs, buffaloes, antelopes and a few birds. We did not spend so much time there for we had to go to Kazinga Project! From the main road to the junction is just 12 km and from the junction to the project is 10km of a murram road. There are lots of animals at the project including Hippopotamuses, ... read more

I’ve come to the end here in Kabale - an end-of-the-line town just a few miles from the Rwandan border - and just minutes after arriving on the Post Bus from Mbarara, I’m desperate to get to Kigali. Maybe the low, brooding skies have cast this town in unflattering shades of gray; maybe I’m cranky and have a stomach ache and ought to know better about first impressions. But after a quick walk around town to mix with the locals, holding my nose against the pestilential smell, I can say with confidence that this is the most depressing place I’ve seen in nearly three months in Uganda. Great hills of garbage tower over the road, piles of trash smolder in the back alleys. Kids with cracked, ashy feet beg for change, their eyes lost in a ... read more

Najbolj zanimiv pripeljaj je bil, ko me je nekdo poklical s ceste (sredi Kabal?!?!), in ... read more

It takes close to an hour to negotiate the traffic of downtown Kampala and make it out of the city, but soon the country opens out around us: lush, undulating, endless, with sheets of smoke rising from the burning crops in the distance. It’s a beautiful, bumpy drive. We stop in small towns for passengers to get off: men with battered suitcases, women with burbling, bleary-eyed babies on their backs. Young boys approach the bus waving skewers of goat meat and packets of peanuts; women suggestively wag a few bananas or bunches of small red onions. I grin and wave but would rather hold off till we reach Fort Portal; there don’t figure to be many bathroom breaks for upset stomachs. Tea plantations cover the hills, broken by small bursts of banana plants and clusters of ... read more
