Hi all....apologies in advance, this will be my shortest blog ever but under some time constraints (i.e. cost 2 pounds for half hour). Just a quick one to say that I have arrived in South Africa safely, am loving Kruger park and have been offered a job as a game ranger here. We've seen so much! Tracey's wedding was lovely. I will attempt to load the 30,000 photos taken over the last few days on here. If not, I'll find someway for you to view them. Anyway more soon, thanks to everyone who has sent me messages, particularly Ruth who seems to be blogging my trip in her own inimitable way - love you! xxxxx ... read more

We went to see the African Penguins at url=(http://www.virtualtourist.com/travel/Africa/South_Africa/ Province_of_the_Western_Cape/Cape_Town-2225504/Things_To_Do-Cape_Town-Penguins_Boulders_Beach-BR-1.html/Boulders between Simons Town and Cape Point. The penguins were adorable and the beaches charming. Afterward we went to the Cape of Good Hope and Cape Point. This was incredible. Probably the most beautiful place I've ever seen. The water was sparkling blue. There was a beach in between the two capes. It was down beneath all the mountains and cliffs. The sand was very white and clean. The water was freezing, but we still put our feet in it and sat for awhile on some rocks looking out at the water. You could see seals surfing the waves. It was very peaceful and I was very happy to be there with Dale... On the drive back there were dozens of baboons in the streets. All the ... read more

So here I am sitting in the computer lab at school trying to recount my week. It was a very busy one. Well...my Wednesday afternoon was horrible. I had the last two periods by myself with the class, and they were extremely loud. I found myself yelling a lot, which I didn't really want to do. I feel like if a child hears yelling all of his or her life then he or she will grow up to yell at children. It is a hard cycle, and sometimes I just didn't know what else to do. The children were just being extremely rowdy. By the end of the day I had lost my voice trying to talk over them. I mean seriously, 47 children is A LOT. So after school Georgina and I went to the ... read more

Hey there, So I guess I have been gone from home for a week now. Left Tucson this past Wednesday, and in the amount of time between then and now, I have experienced so much. Some of what I have seen and heard, people have written many books on, and Ill try my best to describe the situation here. I arrived in Cape Town at 4 in the morning. (Slept the entire first day despite my best efforts) This was actually no problem because I arrived a day early before the program actually started. Thus, I hade more time to recover and explore than many of my colleagues who would arrive the following day. I would meet them all later at home base. South Africa has this amazing influence on all who come here. From the ... read more

Today we went wine tasting at Die Bergkelder one of the oldest wineries in Stellenbosch. It was beautiful, old and rustic. There was a huge underground cellar lit by candle light and intricately carved barrels. We tasted 10 wines. The speciality wines were called "Cape de Fur" meaning flower of the Cape. We had pinotage Pinotage which was first made by a professor at Stellenbosch University. After the tasting Dale went to a meeting and I went with the girls to the grocery store. At the flat we happily munched on cheese.... read more

Tonight Dale, Neele, Lindy, Lindy's two friends, and I went to dinner in Cape Town. Cape Town is about a 40 minute drive from Stellenbosch. It was a tight squeeze in the car on the way there I sat on Dale's lap and on the way back I laid across everyone in the back--much more comfortable! We ate at Mama Africa's (http://www.africa-adventure.org/m/mamafrica/index.html) The atmosphere was great except for the fact we were literally right beside the musicians and had to yell at one another to hear anything. Originally, Lindy had invited us to see her friend's boyfriend's band but the show was cancelled but we went anyway. The two girls were both in their third semester studying abroad. They first were in the Netherlands then Stellenbosch last semester and decided to stay for this semester. The ... read more

So Kruger NP is everything you think it is... bushlands, dried up rivers in the African Winter, an abundance of wildlife, tourists, ( but you don't see them, since the Park is bigger than the Netherlands, and they put a daily limit on the number of cars allowed into the Park) and did i say an abundance of wildlife... just spectacular to see herd after herd of Elephant , journeys of Giraffe gracefully towering over the bushlands, lazily grazing , hippos cooling of in the few rivers that have not totally dried up in the winter months, lions, whose roars are an amzing sound before you fall aslepp at night, the majestic Rhinos who way about 4 tons, and who nevertheless can be so super fast, that you don't want to be chased by one of ... read more

... read more

Yes, you may have thought we had vanished off the face of Africa, but no really we had no internet access and we were fighting the lions, tigers and bears and fires (will expand later). So just to recap when we last wrote we were in Malawi and since then we have travelled through Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana and South Africa to end up at our final destination of Johannesburg. So whats been happening….. I think it’s worth flying through our time in Zambia which more a transit on the way to Zimbabwe than anything else. Although we did stockpile on fuel and food as the instability in Zim meant that they were both in intense demand and we were avoiding major cities. So with our 5,000 kg of mince and 88,000 litres of alcohol we headed ... read more
