Today has been a rather uneventful day spent in the Baz Bus (SA backpacking bus system that takes you from hostel to hostel along the East Coast). After leaing Cape Town in the rain, the skies started to clear up the further north we got, and i arrived in Knysa in the afternoon under clear blue skies... and they are supposed to stay that way!! Jipeeh! The drive was spectacular, first through farm land, then some mountains, until we headed east again towards the Ocean and drove along the Coast, where the wind was still going strong and the waves were massive. Well, i am at a very quite hostel, a couple of blocks of the main street and the waterfront now, and am enjoying a quite evening by the fire place as soon as i ... read more

Been a bit quiter since that crazy first week, mainly because me and my team (we have been split up into 3, 6 person teams) went to the mountains for 5 days, which was alot more chilled out than the reserve, its basically catching rodents for biodiversity studys and either going on hikes or going to the water hole to have a dip or chillout. I was ready to come back to base on tuesday in time for party night which was pretty crazy again before paint balling the next day and farting about in the pool. Which takes us upto today and my first research drive in a week (overdue) but it was worth waiting for as we walked with the cheetah brothers which means walking 10-15 feet behind them while their mobile. from the ... read more

I will have to keep this blog short, because i am running out of internet time, but here it is in a nutshell. I went on a township tour in the morning, and what an experience that was. Actually hard to put into words... walking through the slums os Cape Town... having a "home made beer of corn and maze in a squatters shag, visiting a kindergarten with the most beautiful children, seeing the living conditions in a "hostel" where 16 families live in 6 rooms with one toilet, one cold water faucet, and a small room that serves as a kitchen, seeing an outreach program at work that educates women in simple crafts, so that they can support their children... impression that will be with me forever. after that very sobering and highly interesting and ... read more

After the beautiful day yesterday, the wind at night, and the rain beating against the window was a great indication of what the day was about to have in store.. well in terms of weather at least... so it poured all day, the wind just howled, and actually flooded a number of roads around the Cape, and did quite a lot of damage in the townships (but more on that in the next blog) so today, i went on a tour through the winecountry around the Eastern Cape and the Stellenbosh area, since it seems like a good idea to stay inside a van or inside a winery for most of the day, taste the cullininary pleasures the cape has to offer, and of course sample LOTS of great wines. I met once again a couple ... read more

Fawlty Towers After a very slow start, we made our journey to Cape Town, clutching plastic bags. We dropped Gav off at his digs and we had booked a room a couple of streets away in Green Point at some flats suspciously named Fawlty Towers! We pulled up at a dilapidated apartment block, complete with a huge LED display advertising room rates, and were disappointed but hardly surprised it hadn't matched it's guidebook description. We had been a bit sus when the woman expected us to drop off a deposit to them when at the time we were staying over 400km away. Fortunately, the Irish couple had told us about Big Blue, which was only around the corner. The had a room available and was a cracking backpackers offering us a free third night stay, free ... read more

So i made it safe and sound after a forver long flight and two days of travel i arrived in Cape Town at 9:30 p.m local time. Pouring rain and thunder and lightning proved that is was in fact winter in South Africa, and that the winds around here can howl with the best of them! But since i am on vacation, who cares about the weather , so after a cool "good night " beer at the hostel bar, i hit the pillow ready for some much needed sleep. There is nothing like waking up to brilliant sunshine, and especially if the view out the window is on Table Mountain, so without further ado, i jumped into gear and headed out to explore the city! The walk along famous Long Street, St. George's Mall down ... read more

"So if we are going to be kind, let it be out of simple generosity, not because we feel guilty or fear retribution." -J.M. Coetzee out of his book Disgrace I am reading a book from a South African author, J.M Coetzee, about a man living in Cape Town. It deals with some of the racial complexities of post-apartheid South Africa, which becomes my segwey. South Africa, I have been here for only 3 hours and the airport and taxi ride were full of sights. I walked into the pristine bathroom to find a black woman cleaning and handing out paper towels to all of the white travellers. When I got into the taxi and started driving, I immediately noticed the landscape. I was greeted with a township right by the airport that was filled with ... read more

Hermanus Rach hid huddled under the duvet most the night having nasty spider nightmares but no shark dreams for some reason! We decided to visit Hermanus on our way to Stellenbosch, to spot some whalies. We had dropped by Hermans the previous afternoon, but now the waves were crashing all over the rocks, washing over the lower terraces of the seafront restaurants. We had been lucky to get a shark dive yesterday morning, as yesterday afternoon and today's trips had been cancelled due to rough sea conditions. So a whale watching cruise was out of the question, but this was fine as locals had already explained the whales come right into the bay and you can see them easily from the cliff tops. Sure enough, as soon as we parked up at the look out point, ... read more

Hello from Thoyondou in the northern Limpopo province. Our research has finished well and it seems that we ought to be able to produce some publications from the wealth of data we have collected. Now it will just take a little effort to analyze all of the data on the tail end on the home front. Currently I am visiting with the various student groups in this area from UVA seeing what their summer long projects have produced and assisting in any way possible. I personally hope to come back next summer to study traditional medicines with the University of Venda students and ideally test them using the same methods that I have used in the lab this past spring at home for my Capstone research project. Everything is quite exciting for me right now because ... read more
