I got up early this morning to attend to my poor little travel blog. Had a light breafast (good break after all the "full farm" mornings we've been having!) and showered up. We headed first to the Castle. Building of this fortress (rather than palace) began in 1666. It is a pentagon, with an extra triangle on each of its angles. Take a look on Google Earth! Had a great look-around. The military museum was excellent, and presented the military history of South Africa in a very fair and balanced way. We climbed up on 2 of the 5 bastions and took some pictures of the view. While we were up there, we noticed a "tablecloth" come rolling at a very fast pace over the Table. Sandra was not kidding when she says that weather ... read more

We arrived at Jeffrey's Bay, or JBay as it's affectionately known, in the late afternoon. Our accommodation at Dreamland was a beachside studio flat with a gorgeous seaview, right on Supertubes. We had been lucky to get a room as we arrived in the middle of the Billabong Pro Surf Championships and our flat was situated right next to the stands and judges at Supertubes. We were only staying that evening and left the next morning, so we didn't catch that much of the action, mainly surfers practising on the early morning waves. The town was rammed with surf stores and is great for snapping up surf gear bargains. It would have been nice to have stayed longer and hopefully seen more of the competition. ... read more

Good-bye Cape Town- hello adventure! Africa » South Africa » Cape Town By erin_e July 17th 2007 Erin Enderud Sorry about the quick end to my entry yesterday... hopefully i didnt owrry everyone too much. To continue from yesterday, marnie and i headed back to the hotel where we attempted to call the air lines again and see if thet had been able to find my luggage- all we were able to get was a possible busy signal, as using the phones in a different country can be a lot harder than you think. We tried calling many mant many times, but came up empty. So we decided to head to the internet cafe and search the bag finder website that they provided for us. Once i entered my tracking code the screen said it had ... read more

Well, I returned from my weekend on safari with all limbs intact, and no lion bite-sized chunks taken out of me. It was really an amazing weekend, and I’m not sure that I can describe it all, but we’ll see how far I get. This is a story of the wilderness, of driving on the left-hand side of the road, and of the sunset drive from hell. There were twelve of us UF students that decided to go on the safari. We arrived in Joburg on Thursday afternoon, and split up into our respective cars. I was in a car with my friends Nicole, Josh and Katie (who is also my roommate), and we were pretty lucky since I remembered to bring my FM Transmitter for my Ipod. So we had some rockin tunes. It was ... read more

So Marnie and I arrived safe and sound in cape town at about 9 am local time (9 hours difference for those of you in calgary). The flight was not as bad as we thought a 12+ hour flight would be. We both amanaged to get some good sleep and we fairly rested when we got off the plane. Once we got off the plane and through Customs we headed over to baggage claim where Marnie was able to get her bag and I was left with just my carry-on. My checked baggage never came out of the shoot.... Thankfully I had been able to take my hikers back pack on the flights with me, or I might have been left with nothing. I checked in with South African Air's Lost Luggage and they are currently ... read more

July 16, 2007 Cape Town “” Today at 7:40, I joined Ced on his Walk for Life constitutional. It was a 5k walk around Rondebosch, the suburb where he and Sandra live. It was a crisp morning, and I attracted lots of funny looks in my stylish teddybear pj pants! (I didn't have room for exercise clothes, OK!) It was a nice walk. I do enjoy walking outside versus on a track in a gym! Once we got home, I lazed about, checking e-mails and working on my blog. I had a late breakfast, and then suddenly it was 11:00, and Ced was rather cross that I had made no effort to get started on our day. So, we got going. We had afternoon tea scheduled with an old school friend of mine at 3:00--that didn't ... read more

Heffalump Haven It was another long drive from Coffee Bay, which we were glad to escape, to Addo. After driving through East London we got to King William's Town, where we missed a turn and drove 25km in the wrong direction. However, despite the main route to Addo being closed due to roadworks, we found an alternative route to our hostel the Orange Elephant. We arrived to find the cosy two-bedroom cottage was all to ourselves because another couple had cancelled their booking. We would highly recommend this hostel to anyone wishing to visit Addo because they have a great little bar and the staff are very friendly, helpful and informative. Rach was initially a bit scared of John, the manager, because he looks suspiciously like the blue clown face guy in House of 1000 Corpses, ... read more
