Finally after all the madness of Sydney town, Perth & Cape Town we arrive at this gorgous coastal town called Hermanus & feel ourselves unwind! It is easy to see why Cape Towners come here to chill out on the week ends. The coastline here is amazing. Would love to come back during whale watching season & pull up one of the 100 (seriously) benches they have along the coastal path! There is quite an upmarket & safe vibe here without it being over the top. I was stoked because I managed to drag Deano to the markets, overlooking the beach no less, for a cruise around. Looking at the wares, to the beat off the African drums, it was Deans turn to be stoked when, of all the things, in all the places, a stall ... read more

Sore muscles. Pain. Agony. This is the first day after four of continuous walking/hiking throughout Capetown, and it was time to find an internet cafe "to do the blog". We said goodbye to Peter last week, and had a few days to explore the surroundings of Allison's neighbourhood, Constantia (Nick looked it up in the guidebook and it apparently is one of the posh neighbourhoods-looks like it too with all the big houses). On Peter's recommendation we went to Kirstenbosch Gardens (for all you Vancouverites, it's something like VanDusen Gardens on steroids) for a day. Kirstenbosch is laid out in a fascinating way...plants are grouped together in either family groups or by use (eg. for medicine, food, luck, etc.). One garden was laid out by scent, so we lingered a bit longer there. Kirstenbosch is way ... read more

So, a lot has happened since my last entry! I have done some traveling, rather physical traveling if you will. The student in me has taken two tests (and hopefully passed two tests). I started my volunteer work with So Live and Learn a program which aims at giving 12-15 year olds in one of the nearby townships the skills and confidence to stay in school and go to college. I also am volunteering in two children’s homes (many for physically/emotionally abused), one which is all girls and another which is both males and females. The children are amazing, it is early in the volunteering, so I hope to make a difference and connect with many of them despite my short time here! We left Perth on no sleep and with quite substantial hangovers which was a bad start as we had one of the worst flights I can remember. Going from Perth to Capetown is basically going back in time, it was a 33 hour day in the end! We slept for the first two days in Capetown and awoke on day three to the most glorious sunshine and with table mountain outside our bedroom window. We walked and walked and walked, exploring the town and getting our Africa heads on. Although Capetown is a very beautiful city, the disparity between wealthy and not wealthy, like in most countries of the like is huge. Our local transport was via mini bus where the driver wont leave 'til the bus is full. Full being ofcourse all seats with bums ... read more

Ok so since I left you... let me think, I cant belive a week goes so quick, ive only got like 50 weeks left :( Right, I Cable cared it up Table mountain, awesome view (spot whos been spending time wiv the yanks!) and crawled all the way across it. But felt after all that a chill on the beach was needed. A tour of the penisular was next and que the first ride, luckily on a bike, mostly downhill but still hard work, our lunch was then stolen by babboons, cheeky monkies :) Stellonbosh was the next stop, finally making a move from the Cape, not far mind. Que the wine tour ummmmmmmmm..... Got my money worth and fairly drunk, picture me at a free bar. Happy Pill. With a spare day we went to ... read more

Cape Town is a lovely city with many faces. It's European, it's African, it's rich, it's poor, it's safe, it's dangerous, and it's an opportunity to experience many varied activities in a relatively small area. We enjoyed the waterfront, Robben Island, the surrounding beaches and the wine country, but we never really explored the central city or the townships. Being cautious travelers, the possibilities for theft or other problems was just too great for us. The city tour that was included in our package took us to the major tourist spots. First stop was Table Mountain. This is the famous landmark of the city. A large revolving cable car took us up to the top. It was a slightly hazy day but we were still able to get good views and photos. On the top of ... read more

i have not had computer access for the past weeks..so i am now updating on what has happened. On 6th March Kelly and I flew to Cape Town where we spent just 2 days in disa's mum's house in a beautiful town called Claremont. Her house was right on the beach and was so stunning. I didn't get to see much of Cape Town cos from here we drove 3 hrs to the west coast and holidayed here for a week. The west coast was by far the best place i have been to..beautiful clear skies everyday and sunsets over the ocean. Got to do some diving, but the water is really cold here so thick wet suits were a must. i didn't see any sharks only little sand sharks unfortunately but later on i saw ... read more

We can't believe we've already been in South Africa for 3 weeks. It's flown by, thanks to what we like to call "Brown Ease". But let's rewind. Last blog many of you read about our parking ticket and said to yourselves "it's just Nick raving again"....but Nick was vindicated the very next day, when we awoke to find that the car next to ours had been broken into. And so we'd like to send a great big thanks to the Stellenbosch Traffic Authority, whose motto should be "Making the curbside safer for car thieves". Anyways, from Stellenbosch we drove literally 20 minutes down the N2 highway to a little winery/flea market/animal refuge called Spier....and this is where we began to feel like our trip to South Africa was going to end up being called Animal Planet. ... read more
