It has been quite a while since I made it to a computer to sit and blog so I guess we have a lot of catching up to do. After the safari in Kruger, I got back to the hospital for my last week. I haven't really described my experience at the hospital too much yet. Basically, if you flew over the hospital in a jet going really fast and all you saw was a giant blur, you might mistake it for an American hospital. If, however, you were to step inside it and walk the hallways for a few minutes you start seeing the differences pile up. First of all, South Africa has a huge AIDS problem compounded by an equally daunting Tuberculosis issue. So of the patients on the ward, AIDS will be a ... read more

Civilisation to Nothing “You’ll be riding up front for most of the trip, won’t cha?” the lovable Canadian asked me as I dumped my bag into the truck. “What makes you say that?” “Do you speak Norwegian?” I pointed to the American couple and the Australian girl “They speak English.” He looked at me with raised eyebrows. Having only met me for a couple of days he had me nailed. “Sure you don’t want to come with?” Crestfallen, he shook his head. It was not a matter of wanting but a matter of time, money and all those things we try not to think about every day. Capetown has a population of 3.5 million and is roughly the size of England. So it was not long before we entered nothing. I would like to say we ... read more

Cape Good Hope It was still just me and the boys the next day. We climbed on board the truck and headed towards Table Mountain to see if the Table Cloth had lifted for a wander up to the top. “I’m not joking when I say you are going to carry me.” “I can fit you in my backpack,” Alex winked back at me. Poor sap, he actually thought I was joking. “I could fit in you know.” He surveyed me and nodded in agreement. The Tablecloth was still drapped over and Derick gave us an option. We could take a cable car up now or come back later in the afternoon to see if it is safe enough for us to walk up. I left the decision to the boys. A show of testosterone ... read more

Spier What is more amusing, Derick in his Drifter’s Official Guide Uniform or Derick having to give a briefing with a hang over on top of a hang over? Noon on the dot, Derick and I were the only ones present for the briefing. Ten minutes later and we were still the only ones in the dining room. ‘The boys are in their rooms, I’ll go get them. They do know the briefing is at noon, Nicole would have told them,’ he explained as he bounded up the stairs. I didn’t have the heart to tell him that no one had told me about the briefing time which is why I had to ask him the previous night. Three long blonde haired and exceptionally tanned Norwegian boys followed him down. Is this the group? ‘Guys, this ... read more

Got back to Cape Town on Wednesday night a little after 8pm. Had a tearful good bye with Susie and Louis, got on the Baz bus at noon (overpriced backpacker bus between towns), and ate the sweet and sour chicken pie Susie got me for the road. Spent the next eight hours reading, journal writing (yes, i keep a written journal too), and window gazing. The baz bus stops in every town along the way as a hop-on, hop-off service. So we stopped a lot with frequent changes to the backpackers on board. We even stopped at McDonalds in George - the same one we stopped at on the way to the festival! And no, surprisingly enough I did not eat there. Didn't talk to anyone on the bus until about 5 minutes before I got ... read more

Shark Diving Robert clearly does not work on African Time as he was outside at 7am on the dot. Sixteen to be picked up in total and I was number 5. A large American clambered onboard with two of his companions. Imagine a white, bearded Nutty Professor and you could be forgiven for thinking there is no method possible of pouring him into a standard wetsuit. Buoyancy would not be a problem. It is just unfortunate for our large gentleman that Great White Sharks are surface feeders. Rethinking the issues, how would he get into the cage? I couldn’t read Robert’s mind, but as I caught his eyes he suppressed laughter as he probably could read my mine. Such an open book am I. Waiting at the waterfront for a Brazilian honeymoon couple, Robert had locked ... read more

Africa Bound ‘In Botswana, will see you back in jozi, enjoy the mother city. D.’ was the message I received a week before flying out to Cape Town. Even though I had not made any concrete plans to see my former guide again, I felt deflated that I wasn’t going to experience the Mother City with the person that had inspired me to come in the first place. Also, now I had to break in a whole new Drifter’s guide all over again. Africa has a way of changing you subtlety and unexpectedly. Wandering around London for half the day was painful. London for me is about friends and a night out. There is nothing left for me to discover that strikes me with the same awe and wonder as it did four years ago. Crammed ... read more

Excited about our imminent roadtrip, we headed for the Sunflower Stop Backpackers to collect our newest recruit Barnaby before embarking on our journey down the Garden Route. Barns is a good old bean who we met at the Boss party the week before and who is travelling north through Africa - he convinced us of his Duke of Edinburgh triumphs, so we figured he could be a useful guy to have around. As well as picking up a severely hungover Barns we had another couple of guys tag on who were heading up to Durban, and so it began. First and foremost ... tunes. We had trekked around Long Street the previous day to find a cassette converter for the I-pod and had each compiled a play list (as mental notes) to play - how gutted ... read more

So the ride to Plett was a long hot one. We had a rental car - I was driving with Mike and Chapala - and it was a blistering hot kind of day. Sun coming in, sweat pouring down. We left at 10am, stopped a few times for drinks and snacks and made it to Plett by 5pm. In the meantime we looked at all the scenery on the garden route, lots of beaches and such, and had some good conversation. They were both great to talk to. When we got to Plett, I called Susie to let her know I was in. Susie works at the zoo in Boston where I was zookeeping - we somehow hadn't met but she stayed in touch when she found out about my trip. She's in South Africa visiting ... read more

Okay, okay we know it has been a while since we wrote the last entry, but we have a good reason this time. We were out in the bush in the nature reserve (Groot Winterhoek) surrounding the Educo base camp for 7 days. We have been lucky enough to have an amazing experience volunteering on an Educo course. In one of our recent blogs we explained, as best we could, what type of courses and philosophy make up Educo and now we have experienced the magic for ourselves. We headed off last Thursday (March 31) to pick up the students we would be working with. All of the participants are from a university program called Tsiba. It is a new university focusing on training young people who otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford to attend post ... read more
