Well, it is about 11:00 PM here and we are in the middle of writing our script. It's our first full day in South Africa and we started by shopping at Woolworth's. We then headed to our production offices sponsored by Enigma Films (a South African production company). Our programming started today at James House. We worked with 19 kids -and we might get 1 more tomorrow. That's a lot for our program. And they all had hard to pronounce names with clicks and all! According to them, I look like Lucy Liu and Nichole looks like J-Lo. LOL. That's hilarious. The drive down to Hout Bay which is where James house is is absolutely beautiful. You either see the beautiful ocean or Table Mountain. Hout Bay which I take to be somewhat of a suburb ... read more

So, I've been in Cape Town for 2 weeks now! Holy COW!!! I feel like I'm on vacation and according to my dad that's what it sounds like as well! Within the first 2 hours of being in Cape Town I was on my way to the top of Table Mountain. On the second day I was on the top of Lions Head and since I have been on a peninsula tour, toured Robben Island, visited a few townships, moved into my house, been to 4 beaches, walked the botanical gardens and there is still so much to do. Everyone has said that I will experience culture shock but it hasn't hit me yet The most "shocking" thing is the townships. Shack after shack with people in the streets everywhere because they can not get a ... read more

Two Hours after leaving Durbs I found myself in CT where the weather was pleasently hot but no where near as humid as Durban. Ahhh I wouldn't need to wash my clothes every 10 minutes on account of them going damp with sweat. Ahhh. Cape Town. So many things to do. Robben Island. Table Mountian, Cape Aguilar (Africa's southern most point) Cape Point (where the Indian and Atlantic oceans meet), Shark Diving... First up was baggage claim then the trip to Ashanti where I was to spend the next three nights. Unlike the other places I had stayed at this was bigger and had more of a party atmosphere. The place was also and old converted colonial mansion house and had a 'funky' look to it. Also out of the back Bathroom you could see Table ... read more

Feb 13 Happy Valentine’s Day everyone; the shops here seem to be as eager to get your chocolate covered money as anywhere else in the Westernized world. Everywhere I go there are teddy bears and specials on pink lingerie…just like home. Weather: still lovely. Views: still beautiful. Still messing around with various bits of paperwork: I WILL get Internet access this week, I am DETERMINED.* It’s been a rough week for Maggie; while she had been feeling reasonably confident of her schoolwork, she was also beginning to challenge the system, in some ways without even realizing it. Still, I think that the whole experience will be incredibly important in her growth, and she still amazes me with her insight and logic. She seems to be making friends; was invited out by some girls Friday night and ... read more

Hello all, The latest entry in our blog is coming from Mossel Bay a 6 hour bus journey east of Cape Town, but before we tell you about that we said we would tell you about our day trip to Robben Island! We bought our tciket the day before as this trip is very popular, and we could see why. Before boarding the ferry we walked around the exhibiton which explained about Nelson Mandela and apartheid. Once we had boarded our ferry it was a forty minute trip to the island. Once we had docked and got off the ferry we hopped on to a bus for a tour around the island, stopping at points of intrest such as the lepar graveyard and the limestone quarry, where the political prisoners were sent to work. In the ... read more

Hello viewers, welcome to the next installment of the "Nick and Sarah TravelBlog", weve been quite the tourists these last few days visiting the major things like Table Mountain and robben island, we did them on 2 seperate days though, weve got the time to take things easy! aswell as table mountain we did a hop on hop off kind of tour, which took us round the city which we both found intresting but an open top bus + us + 30 degree weather sure was exhausting! we hopped off at a place called the Castle, which was used by the dutch, but unfrotunatly didnt find it as intresting as we had hoped, but at the cost of a pound it was no great loss, the reason we got off was that the cable car wasnt running ... read more

Feb. 8,2006 I was in a better mood this morning, I should have written then. I think Maggie and I are both suddenly having a moment of homesickness. That’s to be expected of course, but today it’s intensified by Maggie’s stress over the amount of homework she now has, and mine is intensified by her stress and two glasses of wine. I haven’t had any bad wine yet, I’ll say that. The white wines have been particularly refreshing in this heat, and there have been a couple lovely roses. We had a particularly yummy red last Sunday: from Lourensford, vintage 2003, that Mum had got a good price on at one of her craft fairs. Unfortunately I left it on the counter the next day and it COOKED; must get used to the heat and how ... read more

After ging through the realativly painless eperience that is Cape Town airport we were chauffer driven to our first hostel "Big Blue Backpackers" which sits just on the waterfront at the foot of Signal Hill. We were promptly shown round by the helpful staff and are amazed by our accomodation, it is completly the opposite of what you think of when you hear the word 'hostel', to give you an idea of the size of our private room we have a large double bed, aswell as a set of bunk beds! what we have those for i ... read more

We caught a quick puddle jumper flight from Kruger back to JoBerg and then a proper jet aircraft over to Capetown. My parents chatted up a nice lady on the place who was nice enough to lead us in her car (we followed in a rental) down to the waterfront where my parents had arranged to rent an apt from friends back in the States. Well, would'nt you know it but, after asking my mother if the apt had TWO rooms, we show up and it only has one room for use (and the place was a bit dank and musty). So, we quickly found a suitable hotel around the corner and we situated ourselves for the next 5 days in Cape Town. After a dinner at the V&A Waterfront (a bit touristy), I dropped the ... read more

January 6, 2006 Our flight arrived in Cape Town right on time, and even after an eleven hour flight, we were pumped and ready to go. We got one of the backpackers’ shuttles into the city center and checked in at the hostel. Lucky for us, we were early, as the hostel had promised three groups a double room, and there was only one available. After snatching it up, we locked our stuff in the storage room, and headed out to discover Cape Town. We couldn’t get into our room, so we were still dressed in our Milan clothes, and felt grubby and hot. We were also still wearing our running shoes, and the blisters on our feet were not too happy. We walked down to the castle, which is the oldest building in South Africa. ... read more
