South Africa Karongwe A quick entry (with just a few pics) to let you know things are going well in South Africa. Just finished five weeks at Karongwe Game Reserve. We daily tracked the lions, leopards, cheetahs and hyenas there. The reserve was great. Managed to get very close to the animals. Sometimes too close!! Leopards and elephants charging at vehicles - exciting and scarey moments. Training week was our first week. Took a while to get back into the routine of lectures and revision. We had a few written and practical tests then at the end of the week. Our training also involved going to the reptile park to 'get over our fear' of snakes. We had to manouvre a black mamba, on our own using only a stick! To celebrate the end of training ... read more

I leave Moholoholo on tuesday. I'm soo sad :( I don't really want to go and could possibly stay longer now too. I do want to see what my other project is like though. I am going to a community project only about 30 mins away so if I really don't like it I can come back! We have been very busy tagging Vultures and Marabou Storks. We have tagged over 100 now and released them. Brian is very happy! I'm really annoyed as I've got some great pictures but my camera just died so can only share the ones that I have saved already. We have a 50 year old vet from Seattle here. He arrived on Monday. Its good having a vet here and he even brought a suitcase full of syringes, needles, bandages etc. Jolly and ... read more

Hi All, I've now been in Africa for 10 weeks...HOORAY! I am truly loving it more and more each day. I know I haven't posted in awhile, and those who know me well, know I'm horrible about corresponding, but here's a nice long post complete with photos. Also, this may be the last post in awhile since I'm leaving on Monday to the Baboon Sanctuary (C.A.R.E.) and there's no internet there...so I guess my attempt at travel blogging failed miserably...sorry guys. Tons of things have happened since I posted last and I'll try to cover as much as I can. "What would you say ya do here?" (if you know this quote, I love you) Let's discuss exactly what goes on at the Vervet Monkey Foundation :) Usually I get up at 7 and monitor the ... read more

Haven't really got much to say as I am updating this journal quite frequently. I went on a bush walk on Tuesday at 6.30 in the morning. We looked at tracks, trees and poop!! We came within 2 metres of two Rhinos. It was scary. I have never seen them on foot before. At one point we were surrounded by Giraffe,Zebra,Warthogs and Impala all at the same time it was amazing! We were on the bushwalk for 2 hours and it killed me walking through the forest in the heat and it was steep at times. It was worth it though. We have mainly just been at Moholoholo the last couple of days. Lyn who normally takes us places is on leave for 3 weeks so one of the rangers have to take us out. We ate ... read more

I'm really happy! I'm staying at Moholoholo for an extra 10 days. Was meant to be going to my other project on the 6th but now going on the 16th! Would have been better actually spending the whole 2 months here as I'm settled in and love the animals but i'm definetly up for giving the other place a go! On Saturday we went to Na Veni it is a private part of the Kruger park that only we are allowed to go to hehe! We left at 6.30am and went in two trucks. By the time we got there it was boiling. It is ALOT hotter than where we are because we are within the mountains. We followed alot of tracks which was cool. Saw quite a lot of Giraffe,Zebra,Wilderbeast,Hornbills,Eagles and lots of Impala! On ... read more

Whenever I come to the internet cafe my brain explodes. I have soo much to say but have soo little time. I think posting pictures is actually just easier! I have had soo many cool messages i'm really happy :) I always look forward to going to town. On Sunday we went on a boat trip through the Blyde river canyon. It was beautiful but a little boring after an hour. I swear the guy didn't know what he was talking about. Afterwards we went to a waterfall. It was worth the walk through the forest and over rocks. We all just ran in. It was soo pretty! We didn't get to stay for long but we're going to spend a whole day there soon. Monday we went to Hoedspruits endangered species project. Its very different ... read more

Hi guys. Turns out I do get internet here, and although it's slow as hell, it's a pleasure to be able to surf around in my down time. Anyway let's get to the good stuff - monkeys! I really don't know how I'm supposed to describe being here. It's amazing and gorgeous and far more than I could have asked for. The whole sanctuary is huge with about 8 different enclosures and two wild "bandit" troups. Most of the vervets come from past owners, were injured by farmers, found as orphans, or born here. So far I've had some great opporunities. The first day I was with the orphans...which ROCKED! You just sit and play and feed them. 5 of them in all - Acorn, Nandini, Vibrance, Innocence, and Scooter - and they're about 8 weeks. ... read more
