Been a bit quiter since that crazy first week, mainly because me and my team (we have been split up into 3, 6 person teams) went to the mountains for 5 days, which was alot more chilled out than the reserve, its basically catching rodents for biodiversity studys and either going on hikes or going to the water hole to have a dip or chillout. I was ready to come back to base on tuesday in time for party night which was pretty crazy again before paint balling the next day and farting about in the pool. Which takes us upto today and my first research drive in a week (overdue) but it was worth waiting for as we walked with the cheetah brothers which means walking 10-15 feet behind them while their mobile. from the ... read more

I spent the afternoon looking around the lab for chemicals I needed for a specific test...and failed miserably...they are in the process of remodeling the building and everything is scattered everywhere. I enlisted the help of a UNIVEN grad student, and the two of us set out on a campus wide hunt for the chemicals....after an hour or two of rummaging through store rooms and boxes and the occasional bright red "Biohazard bag" ("Don't worry Jim...its not REAL biohazard"....I have no idea what "real biohazard" means but even the fake stiff makes me nervous...I decided that the chemicals probably weren't in the bag and set it aside uninspected). We eventually concluded that the chemicals were not in the microbiology department and moved on to the chemistry department. The student led me outside to a solid ... read more

Things are progressing well with the study. I've been working closely over the past three days with Mr. Shakes Mathbula, a nurse at the Health Center. I've really just been observing and trying to figure out how best to work the study protocol into the day-to-day happenings of the clinic. The clinic itself is a government run establishment that is part of the Vhembe District Health Department. Its like any other primary care setting in the states. For the kids its mostly runny noses, colds, flu, immunizations and well child exams. Most adults present with similar complaints or they are receiving monthly care for more chronic conditions like hypertension, diabetes, asthma etc. They do quite alot of pre-natal care and I was fortunate enough to sit in on a few exams, the two weeks of obstetrics ... read more

I'm shattered the kids at school have worn me out! 43 5 year olds screaming and running around. We just can't control them!We have to get teacher Freeder from next door most of the time as they actually listen to her! They are absolutely gorgeous though even though they drive me mad! It's my last day at school tomorrow quite sad but I think i've had enough now! Tomorrow school finnishes at 12pm and then we are going straight to kruger park. We are going for 3 days! I've had a strange week. I left Moholoholo on tuesday. I really did not want to leave.I even got a goodbye present from everyone it was soo cute! I got a card a little zebra pen and a key ring :) The lady Esri who runs the Nholwasi community project came and picked me up on tuesday morning. When I got to Nholwasi they were putting tents up for us. They are at a new location so they are still getting everything together. After about half an hour of being there I was already in tears!
