Well, hello hello! It has been over a month since my last entry and so much has gone on that I will just simply rewind and try to keep it as short and sweet as possible... School got out on April 27th and I was so excited for our break! At the time, my sister just had the babies on April 25th - Mason Jordan (5 lbs 1 ounce) and Sydney Blake (4 lbs 1 ounce) - so I was feeling very anxious to go home and see them. But I had made these travel plans to go to Zambia with another volunteer to see Victoria Falls... so I sucked it up and went (poor me, right?) We took the Intercape to Livingstone, Zambia which was a 21 hour bus ride...phew...it was long and hot ... read more

We have spent the last 3 days exploring Etosha National Park and it was awesome, one of the best places that I have been! We saw loads of animals and I took loads of photos. Some would say too many! One of the great things about is Etosha is that it is all self drive so you just get to the gate, pay your fees and then you are free to drive off in search of wildlife. It was so cool. No soon as we were through the door we saw a heard of springbok and then some zebras. Loads of photos got taken then, as we did not realise that we would get a lot closer to them later on. Both Springboks and zebras seem to be everywhere and are quite happy to stand right ... read more

Tue3rd Got the truck over the boarder to Namibia, we arrived in Windhock, the capital, at 2pm and had till 5 to explore. It was very modern fairly big town. We went to a tea place for lunch and then onto the net.. We then drove to a hostel- yes no tents!! And out to dinner at Jo’s beer house where the carnivores had such delights at zebra, croc, springbock and ostrich and the veggies were left with rather grotty pasta. Wed 4th Full day on the truck but I put one of the mattresses on the floor and slept some of the way. It was raining as we drove through Etosha park on the way to the campsite. The campsite is next to a big drinking pool for the animals and has chairs around ... read more

This was just after I cut my foot on while on the house boat and despite it being really hot and there being a beautiful swimming pool, I was very good and watched the animals at the water hole instead!... read more

It was in Windhoek that we lost our traveling companions (and their air conditioned motor) and had to go it alone again. We had a full day in Namibia's capital to plan the next 10 days of our trip before we needed to be back in Cape Town. Windhoek is a decent city with plenty of amenities to assist our mission and plenty of opportunities to eat more great steak. It also has some very interesting street names. The main streets in the city are named after world leaders: Fidel Castro St, Nelson Mandela Ave and (er) Robert Mugabe Ave. The area where we stayed they were named after composers: Bach Strasse, Beethoven Ave and Wagner Strasse. This got me thinking, the UK should definitely experiment a bit more with Street names. Maybe future town planner ... read more

Passing yet another milestone, today is our 200th day away. Hopefully we're not fading from the collective memory entirely. We spent the day in Etosha National Park, driving for about 6 hours from one campsite to another via yet another (where we stopped for lunch). The stopover campsite was where we had our daily cool down swim, whilst waiting to see if our truck could continue. We'd broken down in the morning when the fanbelt broke and, despite the pre-departure assurances about the truck carrying an extensive array of spare parts, the only spare fanbelt on board was the wrong size. Alois the driver worked his magic though and as things turned out we were able to continue with our journey without breaking down again -lucky really since we were in the middle of a ... read more

Our drive took us into Etosha National Park, the reason for most foreigners' vists. This is a huge park with plenty of wildlife, and even on the drive to the campsite inside the park we saw plenty of animals... zebra, wilderbeasts, giraffes. The sun was really beating down on us today so the first thing we did was find the swimming pool to cool down. It's amazing that pretty much every campsite we've stayed in has had a pool, and they've by no means been luxury places. It just seems to illustrate how much of a vital amenity a pool is in these 40+C temperatures. Our truck took most of the group out for a game drive in the early evening but we stayed put on the grass by the pool. We were pleased too ... read more

I was going to write a light hearted report of this tough holiday, sunshine, good food and swimming pools etc. But, that is as nothing to the night we had at the end of our short trip to Etosha Game Park. The game viewing had been good except for the sitings of elephants and other large game. On arrival I went off to cool down inthe swimming pool with the others, except for Matthew, who went off to the waterhole. He came back with a wonderful experience of seeing a rhino. So, we all trooped over at about 6 in the eveining, hoping to see something, but not expectant. There were lots of deer and some giraffes going down to drink and after a time some people gave up and went off to eat and watch ... read more

Hi folks. Well we've been through Namibia now and have landed in Cape town safe and well if a little exhausted. Namibia was, without doubt, the hottest place either of us have ventured into. We began with two days at Etosha national park where we saw loads of lions, rhino, giraffe, elephants etc. For those looking for a short safari break I'd definitely recommend it as the main campsite / resort Okaukuejo has a watering hole right next to it where, throughout the day, you can see loads of animals constantly streaming in for a drink. Our final game drive on tour gave us the sight of a leopard stalking and chasing a springbok although we didn't get to see the kill as it disappeared into the trees. We then headed to Spitzkoppe, a kind of ... read more
