After bush camping with the San people we had a nice lie in, until 11:00am!!!! Longest lie in we have had all trip really, although I was still wide awake from 5:00am it was nice not to have to rush around. Our first challenge was to make it out of the bush camping site without getting stuck again. The way we did this was to let down the tyres on the truck, drive down the sand road and then let them back up again before carrying on down the main road. This meant that we had about 45 minutes of waiting around in the midday sun when we were letting the tyres back up again but I didn't mind that. I found a nice bit of shade under a tree on the roadside and carried on ... read more

After Swakopmund and a bush camp in the picturesque Spitzkoppe region, we entered Etosha National Park in northern Namibia. Our "campsite" turned out to be more of a holiday resort, a bit like Center Parcs, with no less than 3 swimming pools, which was a good idea since the weather had started to get really hot, especially during the day. The other great feature of the campsite is a water hole, which is floodlit during the night. Many animals come to the water hole throughout the day and is a great place to chill out for both humans and animal. There, I saw (black and white) rhinos, a group of elephants, and numerous giraffes, zebras, antelopes and jackals. We also went on game drives in our overland truck and managed to catch a pride of lions ... read more

29 Sep - we drive through the Damaraland region today stopping off at Twelyfontein to look at Bushman rock engravings and a petrified fossil forrest....Yaaaaawnnnn. Sooooo boring, such a come down from yesterday's adrenalin rush. Great rock in the area just wish I could climb it rather than walking round it, lol. It's Team B's day off from duties so we head to the campsite bar for an early start on the Savannah ciders :) Later that evening the staff perform traditional Namibian song and dance for us including some audience participation, go Bruno go!!! Head back to the campfire with the intention of going to bed but Ulf has appeared with a bottle of vodka so Jason (the English surfer dude) and Jason (Canadian juggling dude) and I keep him company...an extremely drunken night follows ... read more

It's our last night in Namibia, and I'm a bit sad. I absolutely love this country. The days have been filled with lazy contentment as I read or knit on the bus periodically interrupted with gasps of disbelief as we pass a lion guarding a watering hole or a deep red sand dune towering against the brilliant blue sky. The past forty-eight hours were among my favorite on the trip. Steve and I celebrated our one month anniversary with a bottle of delicious South African shiraz while we sat at a watering hole and watched the steady parade of elephants (with so many adorable babies!), zebras, giraffes, springbok, black rhinos (also with a calf), and even a leopard! There were all under twenty yards away! Dinner that evening was all of Steve's favorites: mutton, pork ribs, ... read more

We joined the overland truck (it may have seats like a bus but apparently it's most definately a truck) in Cape Town and spent a week traveling up to Swakopmund on the west coast of Namibia, taking in Orange River, Fish River Canyon (the second largest canyon in the world after the Grand Canyon) and the amazing huge red dunes of the Namib desert on the way. Unfortunately we've had a (hopefully minor and temporary) issue with our photo back ups - when we get to somewhere more urban we're going to attempt a rescue so I'll save the blogs for the first part of the trip until then - hopefully soon! Swakapmund is a pretty town with wide streets and german looking architecture which has fast become the adrenaline sports captial of Namibia. And unfortunately ... read more

Watching a baby giraffe trying to swallow a whole apple is a bit of a scary sight particularly if you are the ones that have fed the apple to the unfortunate beast. As you can imagine it takes a while for the apple to get down its very long throat - fortunately it did manage to recover but by that time we'd run off and hid on the bus hoping that if it did die we could make a quick get away. The baby giraffe was one of the pets at the cheeta reserve that we camped at. While most of the cheeta were semi wild there were three big cats that had been orphaned and raised by the owners. This meant we had a chance to pet them although Eric decided not to do his ... read more

On Sunday morning we started the 516 km north via the towns of Okahandja, Otjwarongo and Tsumeb to the Sachsenheim Guest Farm (+264 67 230011) (Cost: N$60.00 pppn + $15.00 pv) (Location: S18 44.809 E17 15.670) On Namibian roads it is wise to be on the lookout for animals next to road. The biggest danger is in Kudus that can easily jump a 3 m fence to cross the road. You really don’t want a Kudu through the front window. The second problem is warthogs. A warthog under you vehicle lift the wheels of the road, you loose control and end up in the ditch. If you keep your eyes open you may also be as lucky as we were when we saw four cheetah's on the stretch between Okahandja and Otjivarongo. We pulled over and ... read more

There is a beautiful place on this planet, with the power to take your breath away, hidden away from mainstream tourism's eyes.I'd heard such amazing stories from the very few people that I had met that had visited some of the remote areas of Namibia, that it fired my imagination and I made a mental note to put it into my own personal "bucket list", (things to do before I kick it) as one of the top places to visit on the planet. I was also surprised at how many people I spoke to, who did not even know where the country was and looked at me with surprise and commented, "why are you going there?", as if I was doing something so extraordinary! Well, I can tell you, this amazingly beautiful country and it's people ... read more

Etosha National Park was spectacular! The highlight came on the first night/morning where we camped at an amazing water hole. Once we arrived (sunset) we sat at the water hole with our tripod and only left for dinner at 7pm and a short sleep break between midnight and 3:30am. The elephants were the first to show up followed by 3 to 5 black rhinos. When they were finished, the place was a bit less busy but we did see some more animals including a spotted hyena, jackals, giraffe, zebra, springbok, more elephants and rhinos. We went through a bit of a drought between 3:30 and 5:30 (guess we should have slept longer...) and then a black rhino showed up. It was quiet again until about 6:20 when the morning game drive that we opted out of ... read more

Northern Namibia From Rundu we did a 4 hour drive to Etosha national park to stay at one of the government safari camps called Halali. The camp is actually luxurious and has a floodlit watering hole as one of its main attractions. Etosha is mainly a self drive national park so most days we headed out ourselves in the trusty polo on the gravel roads to try and spot some game. It didn't have the same mystique as Savuti or because we were driving ourselves, the information you get from a guided drive. However, it was still very good and we got to see big herds of zebra, elephants and giraffe. We also got lucky one night after dinner at the floodlit waterhole and managed to see a black rhino having a good drink. There are ... read more
