Etosha National Park Spent 5 wonderful days camping and driving around Etosha NP. It's a 20,000 km2 park, 2/3 open to the public. We travelled from the Western gate to the eastern staying at the 3 campsites attached to lodges at each end and one in the middle. The lodges were in lovely settings and well maintained and each had their own waterhole. We developed a routine quite quickly of getting up early , into the car, heater full on and drive to a waterhole. Have breakfast there watching the wildlife. Then spend around 4 hours driving around from one waterhole to another. The raods were good gravel roads and good signage everywhere. Then back to the lodge for an excellent buffet lunch (smoked salmon and grilled prawns one day). Then back out to sit at ... read more

June 7th I woke up stiff as a plank of wood, I hadn’t slept on two sleeping mats as I typically do, and the roof of the truck is as hard as metal…weird eh? Since we woke up so early we didn’t have much of a breakfast at the camp but rather just tea. Being the awesome driver that Farron is, he had made some sandwiches for us to munch on while we entered the park. Before we knew it we had entered Etosha National Park and began searching for game life. Right away we had giraffes grazing next to the side of the road, a stones throw away from the windows of the truck. That really was child’s play because once we got to the watering hole about an hour into the drive we were ... read more

We were back into the game drive routine - up at 05h30, coffee and rusks for breakfast and in the bus ready for the gates to open. It had been a warm night with plenty of lions at the waterhole. The lions roared most of the night whilst the jackals laughed in response, though their high pitched voices not to the same effect! In the first 30 minutes, our eyes were peeled wide, looking for any sign of life. Giraffe were first to be spotted (if you ignore the springbok) though too far away. As we moved out of the open grassland into an area covered in bushes, Colette saw a small pride of lions behind us. Maxwell stopped the bus and we all stood in quiet amazement as not one, nor two but maybe a ... read more

Another early start and another race to have breakfast and put the tents down by 07h00. This morning was a record and we managed to leave the camp site by 06h45! Fortunately it wasn't a cold night although the wind of the previous afternoon had disappeared. Most of the sand from the Namib was now in my tent, even though I'd closed the air vents and zipped the flaps tight. We were all settling down to the start of the journey when a Cheetah ran across the road and into the grass. None of us was prepared and no cameras were out. In fact, this was not Cheetah country so it was a surprise even for our guide! Roughly an hour into the journey, we stopped outside a local village and went to meet the Himba ... read more

Etosha Wednesday 10th February Today is mostly a driving day as we head towards the Etosha Game Reserve. We set out early {again!!} and make just one brief stop at Outjo to pick up supplies {including a large chocolate cake for Andrew’s birthday}. We arrive at Etosha Camp Site, just outside the reserve, in the early afternoon, giving us time to dry out our tents after the previous night’s rainfall, do some washing, and still spend some time in the pool. Like all the other campsites the facilities here are excellent. Apart from the pool, electricity and hot showers, the flushing toilets here have a can of air-freshener in each cubicle! Etosha Game Reserve We get up early the next day to go to the National Park at Etosha and to try and cat ... read more

We cossed into Namibia at Oshikango and after shopping and a few beers pushed on and camped at a small wildlife park. The next day we arrived at Etosha National Park and spent 2 nights there. We had multiple game drives on our truck and drove across to the west at Okaukuejo for the second night. The variety of game was enormous. Lion, elephant, giraffe, cheetah, rhino, oryx, plus many more. The next day 29th July marked our departure from the group at Ouitjo where we met Mike and Carla, local residents with whom we stayed for 3 days before we drove to Windhoek where we stayed at camelian backpackers and enjoyed a pleasant time celebrating our anniversary and generally sightseeing. We then flew to Capetown.... read more

South Africa--Botswana--Namibia Wednesday, Sept 30 - High 28, low 16 - Nata to Kasane, Botswana 320 kms Last night was our first night in Botswana. Botswana has a population of 1.6 million people. It peacefully gained independence from Britain in 1966. Shortly thereafter, diamonds were discovered making it the fastest growing economy in the world every year for the next 20 years. After breakfast at Nata Lodge, we headed out on our bikes. We had been warned that on route to Kasane, we might encounter ostrich, giraffes, baboons, and possibly elephants on route. Sure enough, shortly outside of town, we see our first wild animal, an elephant at the side of the road making a meal out of a good size tree (see photo). We pulled over probably about 100 feet from him. It was just ... read more

Greeting from Botswana, we are sat in a airport waiting for our flight into the Delta here is our Etosha blog Like Kevin Myers’ life long dream of climbing killamjaro, Adam to has a long standing ambition. Ever since his dad bought him the video “The lions of Etosha” when he was 10 years old he has always wanted to visit this unique place, lets hope it will be worth the wait, as we all know that was a long time ago… We drove to Etosha from Palmwag 350 km, the first 200 km were bump after bump, we hit tar road for the last 150km, whoever thought that a smooth road surface would feel like such a luxury! We spent the fist two nights camping at Okaukuejo, and the next two nights at Halali which ... read more

Leaving the delta behind, we cross into Namibia, the penultimate country on our organised overland trip, and a place which promises some amazing experiences. Our first stop is Etosha National Park, a place renowned for some of the best game viewing in Africa. The omens are not good though... on our way to the park, we have a blow out a damaged gasket, forcing us to limp into a town a long way from Etosha to make repairs. After an amazing effort by our driver, Pete, we get underway and make Etosha just a few hours late, but our game drive is short and we see little... a glimpse of a male lion as he walks away into the bush. Luckily, our campsite provides one of the park’s best game-viewing areas - a watering hole, just ... read more

Er ... read more
