Mostly photos today. Not much to say except that it was wonderful to have Michèle visit me, show her around Marrakech and host her at my home for a couple days. She was a guest speaker in one of my English classes and played interview with them, asking and answering questions. When I had my back tuned at one point she asked the kids what they had learned about American culture from me and one girl said that she learned that women can live alone and be happy with their career. It was an influence I hadn't thought about and I am grateful to Michele for pointing out that the differences I make are one more than one level. As I have experienced with previous guests, it's refreshing to see Morocco and Kelaa through new eyes. ... read more

DAY 5 Had breakfast after 8ish and this time round we actually saw other people in our Riad eating breakfast. There was also a man leaving and I remembered him from the night when we were eating at the Market Food Stalls, because he was sitting behind me. He was from Strassburg, but he lived in France. He was traveling on this own but when he originally booked tickets there was supposed to be more people. Good to see nothing stopped him. We made our way to Ensamble Artisale and did last minute shopping. We found that the things here were less expensive then the souks, but the again, we were just probably really bad at haggling!!! I got my name written in Arabic! We dropped off our stuff to the Riad, then made our way ... read more

Woke up a little later this morning. It wasn’t raining, but it was very chilly!!! We arrived at Sahara Expeditions and there were only 2 other people on this trip, Ken & Josie from Nottingham. The journey wasn’t as long this time, and the driver was nice enough to make a few stops for us to take photos. When we arrived at Ourika Valley, again we were asked if we wanted a guide, and we said yes. His name was Hassan and we called him the “Jumping Man” because he was forever jumping from place to place whilst we were struggling to climb sometimes! Sometimes it even looked like he was jumping to his death. Okay, that’s a bit dramatic, but from where I was sitting, it looked quite scary. Anyway, the views were amazing and ... read more

Woke up to what sounded like hard rain pouring down, so was feeling a little glum, plus the fact we had to get up at 6am in the morning to get ready for our trip. The Riad staff were really nice because they got up a little earlier then usual to make our breakfast. It was a good thing because we had a 3 hour journey ahead of us!!! When we finally arrived at Ouzard, the sun was starting to come out!!! We were asked is we wanted to have a guide to show us around the village, gorge & waterfalls and everyone agreed. It was only 50 dirhams each. The tour was great because he talked us through everything, from the olive growth, the food and herbs the people used and the gorge! There was ... read more

DAY 1 Stayed awake waiting for 4:30am so I could take a cab to Victoria Station to catch the Gatwick Express to Gatwick to meet Silvia and Roland and check in. I was really hoping to catch up on some sleep on the plane but I couldn’t get comfortable! At one point I started feeling dizzy and when I got to the back of the plane to use the toilet I fainted. But it wasn’t anything serious. I was soon back on my feet! When we landed in Marrakesh, I was so excited about being there, I didn’t even think of what happened on the flight. We lined up at Passport control which took ages, so we kept swapping lines to see which one would go first. We changed some money at arrivals and found the ... read more

After having one to many farewell drinks with Frank the night before I got up at half Eight and attempted to pack my bag for morocco. Packing may have been slightly affected by the previous night activities as I noticed I had left my passport at home when I was half way into London. managed to leg it back and got to Gatwick an hour before the flight. luckily there were about three people on the fight so had no trouble gettin on the plane. On arrival the weather in Marrakesh was no better than england...5 degrees and raining hard..... Woke up at seven in the morning and hopped on mini bus with about ten randoms and headed out for the desert. At about nine we had hit the atlas mountains which were freezing cold and ... read more

This hasn’t been the best year for snow, but last week we got the rain the farmers have been praying for and I decided I couldn’t wait any longer to go find the ski area called Oukaimden. I hadn’t heard much about it, though one woman from my gym said she had been there. It’s on the map and with that knowledge I figured it had to exist. Skiing isn’t a very popular sport in Morocco. Most of the people I asked about Oukaimden enthusiastically told me it is beautiful and there is snow, though when pressed about chairlifts and ski rental the conversation got markedly vague. Two other volunteers had expressed interest in a ski trip: Brian from Montana and Bart form Illinios. We spent the night at Brian’s and I was so excited that ... read more

okay so with the photos on this page; it should work by going tp the gallery and then double clicking on the photo of me at the grand canyon. all the photos have been uploaded and when i log on; not through through the ad,inistration part i can see them. hope it works. well im going to upload a photo of me after a moroccan haircut, its more like a shaved head; it was a hell of an experience. when the hairdresser pulled out the razor and started waving it around i started to get a touch nervous. I think even though at times it can be hard here in morocco im going to miss it in a strange way. The ppl on the whole are very friendly and it really does make u aprreciate how ... read more

Africa » Morocco » Grand Casablanca » Casablanca January 27th 2007
