Morocco was rife with a wide variety of challenges...physical, cultural, mental, olfactory, gastrointestinal. You name it, we did our darnedest to beat it. Despite the tale of woe, hardships, climatic extremes and projectile vomit that you´re about to read, Morocco was one of the most rewarding destinations in our travels. Our ascent of Jebel Toubkal, highest mountain in north Africa was perhaps the highlight. The excitement builds...we´re bound for heights almost twice the altitude of the top of Australia, and it´s a challenge that we can´t wait to face. We´re travelling with our Swiss friend Andreas, and we´re grateful to have him and his mountaineering skills along for the ride. We make it to the tiny mountain village of Imlil (1600m) by the only way we can find from Marrakech - taxi. It´s the longest taxi ... read more

Hello Everybody, Salamu alakyum, Travelblog crashed last week and lost my last ten blogs. While I am very disappointed I hope that you all had a chance to see my last ones before they disappeared into cyberspace. I am now back home, having finished with Peace Corps and accepted a job teaching in Boise. This is my last blog and I am now retired from blogging. Yay! Knowing my days were limited in Morocco I tried to fit in as many adventures as I could in the first half of summer. Gnawa, June 21-24: The Gnawa music festival in Essouira is infamous and every year a group of volunteers manages to go. Gnawa is a Sufi brotherhood and the music is designed to inspire and put people in a trance. The rhythms are repetitive, energetic and ... read more

Arriving in Marrakech by the skin of our teeth, due to a bus driver who thought he was in a Ferrari, we all had a sigh of relief stepping onto the hot tarmac. Arriving at our hotel, complete with pool and a/c, rooms sorted, bags dropped and we headed for the main square where you find musicians, henna artists, snake charmers, fortune tellers, and loads of food stalls where they barbeque meats and veggies and the smoke fılls the sky. Marrakech old city (the Medina) is walled with several gates and at the south end ıs a bıg square. Thıs weekend they were having a World Music festival wıth different music at each entrance. At the main square alone, there were about 10 or so drum circles going and you couldn't help but jump around!! It ... read more

after partying all night with locals in Todra Gorge and getting little sleep, we had a short bus ride to the town of Aıt Benhaddou. This town has a fılm studio and many famous films have been shot here, including Gladiator, Laurence of Arabia, and many others. Next came the mountain town of Imlil, where we stayed ın a converted house called a Gıte. We had to hike up to the village to get there, the walk was through terraces and small rivers as we passed houses of locals and played wıth the kıds along the way. Most of us stıll not feelıng at the top of our game, spent most of the time playing cards and games and running back and forth to the toilets... the next morning we had a nice trek through the ... read more

Driving into Todra Gorge is similar to venturing into Zion National Park, one feels very small! Our hotel had a pool and we couldn't be more excited that most of us jumped in before even checking in! By this time, most of us had either some stomach problems or a lot. The options to hike the Gorge or go rock climbing was not an option. But I was feeling pretty good and decided to go climbing. I have never been rock climbıng but I fıgured what the hell, I am strong and it ıs the best rock climbıng in Morocco! So me and my guide, Yussef were on our way after gettıng all the gear and a short safety briefing. First he would go up and set up all the rope and the clips then ıt ... read more

You know when you are at the edge of the Saraha desert. The sand dunes seems to rise up out of nowhere, and there are camels waiting all lined up waiting for you! Getting on a camel is a bıt of a balancing act, but once you are up there, it is a very cool experience. We headed out about an hour before sunset, and as we headed out to the camp, the colors of the sand change from yellow to orange to terracotta and red. Arriving at the camp some of us ran up and down the dunes, some chilling out, recovering from the camel ride. As dinner was being prepared the stars began to come out and I don't ever recall being able to see that many stars ever in my lifetime. After dinner, ... read more

Leaving Fez early in the am for the journey west through the Atlas mountains into the Sahara desert. The mountain scenery in Morocco looks more like the Western US, with lots of dramatic red rocks and sparse greenery, and long windy roads against cliff faces. That morning we had 5 hours driving and most of the group were hopped up on Immodium, while I just had 4 bananas, it essentially does the same thing! Halfway through our drive, we stopped in Midelt, high up in the mountains and a hike around a small(ish) canyon and down to the casbah (village with mud houses) to meet some local Berber people. The original peoples of Morocco are made up of 5 tribes, and Berber is one of the biggest. Morocco has been occupied or settled by the Romans, ... read more

How does one write about a country and culture so different from anything seen before. morocco stews the senses...period. you see things every other minute that shock you, sadden you, make you smile and only at the end can you shake your head and attempt to process it. we began in the city of marrakech after a 10 hour train ride down from the city of tagner. knowing that inside the historic walls of medina is where every visitor must see. we did our best of filling 3 days of walking the streets and squares of medina sampling moroccan cuisine, haggling with the best known scam artists in the world and escaping from the days heat in any shade we could find. our raid or house named menara atlas was hidden down unmarked streets and alleys ... read more
