(Dan) OK so its the first night at the lovely Souira campground and at about 2am I wake up and somethings not quite right.. and so began my night outdoors. There were packs of dogs roaming through the campground foraging through whatever they could find and at one stage I lay down next to what must have been a red ant colony cause within seconds the were everywhere. Yet I couldn't have cared less there was no energy left in my body, rarely have I felt much worse. The day dawned hot and feverish, and as the sun rose I returned to the tent as Kees, oblivious to my night out partying with the wildlife, began to stir. Sorry mate, no biking today; I have a couple of wee issues to work through. Kees' reaction was ... read more

I came to Morocco blindly. For three of the seven weeks I've been gone I have stayed with families (a week a piece in Barcelona, Valencia, and Granada). The experiences in these homes have been good- in Granada especially I loved my roommates. In Valencia, my host was an amazing cook. Nothing, however, could compare to the Moukhchane famiy. They MADE my trip to Morocco the amazing experience that it was. As for the country itself, it was a lot of things; some rough and some beautiful. At night the skies were filled with stars that twinkled like diamonds. The landscape was gorgeous and actually reminded me a lot of California. There was also a lot of poverty, but the area I stayed in (Martil) was really nice; a beach town. During the day I rode ... read more

Ola! I miss you all! I am in Seville, Spain currently, but am leaving tomorrow for ..........................................................................................................Morocco, Africa!!!!! I have officially lost it. I met Bruno, from Switzerland, at a bus station in Seville and he has convinced me to travel with him to Morocco tomorrow.......we are taking a ferry across the Strait of Gibraltar in the afternoon and will be in Tangier by nightfall. Crazy. I am pretty (well, really) nervous about it, but I had been debating going and now I have a French speaking companion, so I hope we can be safe...... By the way, Seville is beautiful!! Looks just like its "sister city"--Kansas City!! Andy ... read more

(Kees) Our arrival the African continent was surprisingly problem free. Riding bikes off the ferry was smooth. We had our pp's stamped in the boat (at the back??- who knows why, maybe part of King Mohammad VI's liberal reform package), and by- passed all the security, a whole lot of cars, then rode through the gates and into the chaos and mess of Tangier; so no worries. Our expectations of conservative and dry Morocco and the major hustle of bustle of Tangier, with hasslers left right and centre, didn't actually turn out that way. The city was a bit of a mess but it was vibrant enough with plenty going on. The traffic noise of cars and trucks getting of the ferry and into the chaos was pretty intense though. I finally arrived in Marrakesh after spending 3 days at the airports in Buenos Aires and Madrid! I was utterly frustrated and disappointed that 3 days had been wasted. But my anger soon began to fade as I was taken to the riad and offered mint tea and a hot shower. That first night, I spent some time in Jamaa El Fna square, which is the main bazaar (and tourist destination) in Marrakesh. It’s a chaotic and mesmerizing mix of artisans, musicians, snake charmers, fortune tellers, shops, fruit vendors, henna stands, jewelry stalls, and restaurants. The square is packed all through the day and night with Moroccans on vacation, foreigners soaking in the mystical ambiance, nomadic Berberans selling their wares, as well as the local Marrakeshis enjoying a night out. The souks (Moroccan markets) are just ... read more

"The capital of the great South and, although it is now only Morocco's third city after Casablanca and Rabat, its fabulous palaces and luxuriant palm grove continue to hold a powerful fascination for visitors..." As we landed the heat got us first. It was HOT! But not just hot it was BOILING hot, 45 degrees! There was no air - there is no way a pale European can survive there without a bottle of water ! We left the airport, exchanged some money into Dirhams (1 Pound = 16 Dirhams and we're not joking) decided to take a bus to the City Centre (New City actually, built outside Medina). However, a very energetic taxi driver caught us and some young British couple standing next to us and said he would take us anywhere we wanted for ... read more

Hi all, Unfortunately, travelblog had some server problems and some of my blog entries were lost :( They are working to fix the problem so hopefully I will not have to reload everything. I am in Morocco now after 3 days in the airport! My flight out of Uruguay was delayed so I missed all my connecting flights and had to wait for 1 day in Buenos Aires and 2 days in Madrid! But I am finally here. I will upload details and pictures soon. Love, J... read more

Morocco huh, who put that on the itinerary.......... oh was it me?!?!?!? Morocco was bit of a doozy as far as travel destinations go. The country is alot less accessible than other places we have visited and it took more out of you to function within its borders, that being said it was not just a sit back and everyone can kinda understand english kinda place (Dont even try to learn Moroccan Arabic, which is different than standard Arabic and only understood in Morocco and parts of Algeria.... french gets you by though) and it was more difficult to maneuver than anywhere else we travelled so far...... as the title says, same planet different world. Morocco was a mix of ups and downs. For every good experience like the beautiful city like Essaouira, there was a ... read more

while sipping our mint tea and brainstorming our next destination, we met a spaniard "emilio the great" who too was touring much of the world. he was nice enough to share his thoughts on seeing the high atlas mountains of morocco and the world famous sahara desert. it took all of two minutes for us to re-direct our compass to eastern morocco. due to perilous cliffs on either side of us,the twisting roads at elevation and a driver with an almost spastic pedal foot..we enjoyed the sights, sounds, and smell of 3 fellow passengers sharing their lunch on the floor of the bus. On arrival to the dusty desert town of Ouarzazate at nearly midnight, we quickly found that bus schedules were not in our favor and would be staying two nights. we did meet ... read more
