What a crazy, stressful city! When we first arrived it took very little time for our driver to get hopelessly lost in the maze of streets (especially without his co-driver who stayed back in Rabat to pick up our visas). He hired a couple of local teens to direct us to our hotel which was right off the main square Djemma el Fna. This is where the action is. The square is full of entertainers, scammers, snake charmers, etc. It was fairly quiet during the day, but it really came alive at night. You had to be on your toes at all times to avoid getting hit by the scooters that were constantly zipping through. The internet here is pretty fast and reasonably easy to locate internet cafes around. So we thought we would take advantage ... read more

This was our second day in Morocco. We went back to the market for the morning. Same things, just as great the second time. Only now we knew what was coming, and we were veterans at bargaining. I got all my gifts today for everyone back home. I’m shocked all over again at where I am. This is amazing. After some shopping, me Ryan and Jamie sit down at a café and have some more mint tea. This time it has full mint leaves in them. It is so good. I can’t wait to bring some home for my Mudd Puddlers  We have a long drive today, and are heading more inland. I’m not sure exactly where we’re going, but it’s far. At least six hours of traveling. The roads are on the sides of ... read more

“The world is an open book, and those who do not travel read only a page" This trip symbolized a whole new chapter in my life. It is impossible to put into words the things I saw and the feelings I felt these past six days. It's hard to find the right adjectives to describe things. So bear with my horrible writing and try to use your imagination to play with my words. Day 1: Flying from Barcelona to Casablanca and driving to Marrakech. We took the plane from Barcelona. Immediately as I enter the airport the fact that I'm in a foreign place smacks me in the face. Everyone is wearing different clothes and signs are in Arabic and French. All of a sudden I stand out like a sore thumb that I'm not from ... read more

Next stop on the list is Ait Benhaddou, site of one of the most photographed Kasbahs in the world. It's been seen in such films as Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia, and Jewel of the Nile among many others. We only spent a couple hours here, but it was a worthwhile photo op. Much of it looks like ancient ruins until you find out that people still live in the Kasbah. We spent the night at a campsite just outside of town and prepared for the drive over the High Atlas mountains to Marrakech.... read more

Until this point we had been in Tanzania where we were completely taken care of and London which was essentially like being back home. Sure they talk funny but at least we could understand them! Just kidding British friends! Entering Morocco was a bit like running into a cultural brick wall! The minute we walked out of the airport we were surrounded by AT LEAST 10 taxi drivers yelling prices at us in a currency that we hadn’t even bothered to convert yet! Luckily there was another tourist there to save our butts and told us that it would be best to take the bus! We stayed in Marrakech for most of our time in Morocco. Marrakech is known for its huge market of everything from fresh squeezed orange juice to televisions! My dad and sister ... read more

It was a beautiful drive from Rabat to Todra Gorge, it took us just under two days of driving to get there. We saw monkeys on the side of the road, and villiages in places you wouldn't expect to see villiages. In a seemingly endless expanse of nothingness would emerge villages made of mud bricks surrounded by palm trees and corn fields. Irrigation is amazing. When we arrived in Todra Gorge we started in the incredibly touristy portion along with hoards of French and Spanish tour busses. It was a pretty cool view from the centre of the gorge, but for us, the fun was only starting. We camped further up the gorge at a small hotel away from the crowds. For the first time on the trip we were away from city lights and campground ... read more

It must seem as though my Long Service Leave was endless as you receive yet another Travelblog! I was only away for three months but the writing of the blogs is taking longer! I have now been home for six months and am making a valiant effort these holidays to finish my blogs. Bear with me! Rabat Since Independence in 1956, Rabat has remained the seat of government and home to the King. At present, that is King Mohammed VI. Rabat is largely a modern city with much more of a western influence in terms of dress and the roles of men and women. It has had a long history being first settled by indigenous people in the 8th Century and then later by the Phonecians and Romans. Morocco was a French protectorate from 1912 until ... read more

Rock The Kasbah Our final bit of Morocco involved a ton more driving. It seems that you can’t get anywhere in Morocco without driving a long way. The roads are definitely better than many parts of the world but the drivers are exactly the same. You start to wonder, after traveling this long, if most of the world’s population learns to drive by playing video games. Aggressive is an incredible understatement for the average day’s drive. While we successfully made it from point A to point B and, eventually, point C, there were many times it felt like the outcome was in doubt as we dodged oncoming traffic and sped around trucks, buses and cars. All in a days fun I guess! Our first stop out of Marrakech was Ait Benhaddou in the eastern part ... read more

The primary purposes of our next two big cities were to obtain our visas for Mali and Mauritania. We also had lots of time in Rabat to take in some of the sites and catch up on laundry, internet and groceries. While we were in Rabat, we were staying at the Camping a la Plage, in Sale, which is across the water way from the main city. We were told that we could take a petit taxi from central Rabat back to our campsite. After doing a few errands in the city we decided to try. The driver was very kind and was quick to point out to the other drivers on the road why we almost got into 2 accidents along the way. They're all so friendly the way they hang out the window and ... read more

Volubulis dates back to 2nd or 3rd century AD. All that remain are ruins, which some have been reconstructed by the french, to give us an idea of what it may have looked like way back then. There are also still some beautiful mosaics, which unfortunately are fading fast in the heat of the sun. Some people think that Volubulis was abanded because too many people were dying from lead poisoning. The water pipes were made out of lead. Here are a few neat pictures, again the truck kitty paid for a guide. Unfortunately the guide was not very enthusiatic due to the heat, and the lack of food and water (Ramadan). The tour lasted no more than an hour.... read more
