El Maghreb This trip was so cool for so many reasons! - It gave me the opportunity to land on the continent of Africa, thus covering all continents in my travels (apart from Antartica); - It was the first time I organise to meet up with someone that I had met while travelling - I planned this trip with Yau who I had met in 2010 while travelling in Turkey and whom I had stayed in touch with; - I finally got to see Morocco, a country I had always been intrigued about and a country which joined my list of 3 places that really exceeded my expectations in terms of natural beauty, kindness of the people, good food and general great place for travel :) I booked a flight with Qatar Airways from Beirut to ... read more

Our first African experience was anything but dull as we visited the buzzing Marrakech. We were picked up from the airport by a very friendly local in a nice car. It didn't take long for us to experience Moroccan traffic and our driver cranked up his Celine Dion CD and proceeded to exhibit some serious road rage! I was torn between wanting him to slow down and not kill us and wanting him to hurry up so we didn't have to bear too much Celine! It's no wonder the locals prey 5 times a day with traffic like that! At the outskirts of the old town, the roads stopped and became pedestrian lanes so we got out and another guy then took our bags out of the boot, put them in his wheelbarrow, mumbled something in ... read more

Our first trip to the African continent started with an airport transfer... to the wrong hotel! There are two royal mirage hotels in Marrakech and of course we got delivered to the wrong one. And the reception said that our booking had been cancelled. Nice. So after a few dramas (finding a taxi, negotiating a price, etc) we ended up in the right place with our proper booking. Whew! So the first thing we did was head into town and check out the markets. A total tourist trap of course, but still full of hustle and bustle and tonnes of locals doing their shopping too. The main square boasts everything from snake charmers (with their poisonous looking cobras!) to food stalls, stalls selling freshly squeezed juice, people selling knick knacks, kids selling biscuits, and everything inbetween. ... read more

6.20AM wide awake, read a text from Phoebe and manage to get aniother hours sleep. Breakfast at riad, breads, jam, pancake, fresh OJ, tea and coffee. Finally Mohammed arrives and we are talking sites. On his advice we visit Palais El Badi then Palais La Baha, 2 cameras madly clicking, the former a ruin (housing the famous Moroccan rattling birds in the turrets), the latter an amazing mosaic exerience. Walk the streets for a while to get the true Marrakech experience, found our way to Koutoubia Mossque picking up a tasty little pastry from a little cafe along the way, then back to the riad for more tea. After tea we wandered around the corner to suss out Kosybar, plans for drinks there tonight, then tossed up walking or a taxi to Jardin Majorelle (about 2kms) ... read more

Unfortunately they didn't feed us again until 1 hr before landing and as Jules had slept through the first meal she was about to bite someone's arm off. Breakfast was huge, ham, cheese, croissant, yoghurt, juice, coffee, a roll, fruit. Landed about 50 mins early, seemed like we'd taxid for eons, took eons to get through immigration and same to find the Sheraton. 7am, no room until 9, bummer, we are here until nearly 4. Checked in, dropped our bags and went for a walk, nothing open, back to hotel lobby - the Aussie Open was on in the bar so we went in and ordered 2 coffees, worst since Cunamulla in '09! I went to reception at 7:20 to get the passcode for the wifi and they now have a room, awesome. Sleep, couldn't, got ... read more

We landed in Marrakech at about 8am. We made our way through the small airport over to the car rental agencies. There was no one at the counter but we were finally able to find someone to help us after just a few minutes. They had us fill out a bunch of paperwork, and said our reservation was all set except for a deposit that we owed them. He said it was 1,000 Dirham. We were trying to ask the guy if we would get the money back when we returned the car and that’s when it all went downhill... Suddenly the story began to change. Our reservation was now mysteriously cancelled. But he had the money still and could get us a car. Then they had our reservation but no payment and we needed to ... read more

Morocco is a country that a lot of people don’t know a lot about; it can be a hidden jewel for some or a total disaster for others. It can be a lot of fun or it can be a real pain. I’ve been twice and for me it was very fun both times. Casablanca isn’t for tourists, although the Hassan II Mosque is worth seeing. Marrakech is the place to go, they have mounted camel gun shows, snake charmers, monkeys, and for a fee, and you must be really stupid to do but you can have your teeth pulled with pliers. But the activities, tours, and sightseeing are not what I will be blogging about today. Food however, is more up my alley. If you may or may not know, Morocco is a Muslim country ... read more

In Marrakech, it was the end of the tour for those who were only on the 8 day tour, so we farewelled a few people but welcomed about 50 more who joined for the second New Years half of the trip. There were also a few people who met us in Marrakech who should have been on the first part but were delayed even longer than us by snow so couldn’t make it. It is here where one of the best stories of the trip comes in. When we arrived in Marrakech, we were taken to the main square for an orientation, and also to a hamamm (Moroccan version of a Turkish bath), where the offer was a bath/sauna and 1 hour 15 minute massage for the equivalent of £24. This sounded like a perfect way ... read more

Returning to Marrakech after a two year absence was akin to feeling the embrace of a missed companion. This is a place that enchants the visitor with its veritable feast for the senses, from the music of the snake charmers to the aromas of the nightly food market in the main square. Whilst there is a large modern district, typified by long tree lined avenues, the real heart and soul of Marrakech lies with the walls that surround the Medina. The winding alleys of this Medina are juxtaposed with the expansive Jemaa el Fna square. During daylight hours this area is inhabited by palm readers, mystics, cobras swaying to Arabic scales, fruit sellers, monkey handlers and countless curious onlookers. Once night falls, this scene is replaced by another, consisting entirely of food stalls cooking up Moroccan ... read more

Day 8 Off to Marrakesh today but first a couple stops along the way. We stopped just moments away from our hotel and had a guided tour of our first Kasbah, it was called Kasbah Taourirt. Just after that Kasbah we stopped at one of the finest Kasbahs in Morocco, it's called Ait Benhaddou, this is where Lawrence of Arabia was filmed. Pretty amazing buildings, we took a few pictures, and enjoyed the shops. Back on the road we drove through the Draa Valley, the scenery was incredible. Now when we were in the mountains there wasn't too many choices for lunch, amazingly enough being with our tour we had a great little spot that made us all fresh subs....and we had a beautiful view. Back on the road we were almost there!! (Thank god) we ... read more
