The road from the Atlantic coast inland to Marrakech goes through some spectacular scenery including passing near the snow capped Jebel Toubkal, the highest point in North Africa in the high Atlas. The road is a modern dual carriageway in excellent condition. So, driving was easy. At Marrakech we planned on returning the 4WD we rented in Fez and getting back to exploring the medina on foot.... read more

We hadn't planned to go to Morocco. It was just one of those quirks of fate. Now we've been we can't imagine why we never went before. A country so close by, yet so amazingly different. An exotic world of riads, ksars, casbahs and dars. Spectacular scenery ranging from mountain ranges to deserts and beaches. A 'Thousand And One Nights' display of bold, bright colours. Mouth-watering dishes of goat-meat tagine and camel couscous, and pastries oozing honey and almond paste. Veiled women, and men wearing jellebahs. Winding medina lanes, quiet and secluded. Ancient wooden doors, barring the way, but somehow drawing us in. A month was not enough.... read more

Maroc. Sau cum am cumparat antibiotice din desert. A patra zi in Maroc - Marrakech.

Morocco is somewhere that I have always wanted to visit and after growing up in Dubai hearing tales about its exotic Arabic culture, I knew I had to visit one day. Morocco has become infamous for the hassle that tourists receive from touts within the Medina walls and souks of the bigger cities. After hearing a few first hand stories from friends who had been hassled beyond imagine on previous trips we decided to start our trip in a quiet and unassuming place called Taghazout, which is a small surf town around 15km's up the coast from Agadier. We stayed in some apartments called 'Surf n Stay', which were nestled into the cliffs in a perfect location with a little beach right infront of our door and the waves crashing below the balcony. Our host was ... read more

Our last blog took you to the deserts and mountain towns in Morocco and now ----------- the Sounds, sights and smells of Marrakesh. We approached the outskirts of town with great anticipation. We were approaching the famous city of Marrakesh, which has a deep history and is also home to our guide, Mustafa. We’ve traversed quite a few miles in these last days and the next stop would surely prove to be all that we hoped. We’re both sitting in the car with the Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young song playing in our heads…….”do you know we are riding on the Marrakesh express….they’re taking me to Marrakesh”. Actually that song has been playing in our heads for about three days and we are ready to give it a rest. We’ve learned a few facts about Moroccan ... read more

Morocco Day 13 Well you know what they say about 13, well as it turned out today has been unlucky for us. Both of us have been struck down with Marrakesh revenge and it has been raining nearly all day. On top of this our room at the Riad started letting the rain in so we have had to change rooms. We had booked a full day guided tour of the city today, and we were very lucky as our guide Noura was very sympathetic to our condition. Lots of people were speaking to Noura on the tour and we discovered that she had been featured on TV recently in a programme about women working in the tourism industry. We did manage to get out and this morning had tours of the old palaces and mausoleum ... read more

This morning, after another lovely breakfast spent looking out to sea and, as ever, closely observed by the resident gulls, we were collected from our hotel in Essaouira and brought to our Marrakech base the Riad Assouel, where we were given a very warm welcome and a refreshing juice. We successfully negotiated a route out of the medina, amid protests from a local that we were going the wrong way to see the sights, and found our way to the Jardins Marjorelle. These gardens, which had been bought and restored by Yves Saint Laurent, had been recommended to us and were definitely worth a visit. Having paid the reasonable entrance fee, we went through the gate and were immediately transported into an oasis of shady tranquillity from the hustle and bustle of the city. Here, a ... read more

When we arrived on the outer rim of Marrakesh at Marrakesh Menara international airport at around nine at night all seemed normal from the window of the taxi but as we began to immerse ourselves in the old part of the ancient city we seemed to be in some sort of time machine and the more we moved to further back in time we went. The taxi zigzagged deep into the narrow dark alleys littering the city as far as was possible by vehicle and to be honest i was uneasy and did not want to get out, it was all to much. Then from nowhere a man with a wooden cart that he most likely made himself appeared and he loaded our cases onto it. He then made a gesture to follow him the taxi ... read more

Wrocilismy po miesiacu, a tu to samo -silny wiatr i piasek, rozowe niebo, ponad czterdziesni stopni. Siedzimy i czekamy na litość;) marokanska jajecznica na pomidorach uratowala nam zycie i wrocila sily. Czekamy bo jedyne auta jakie tu jezdza to te opuszczajace granice. Wyjezdza jeden,lapiemy.. ach zawrocil, i ustawil sie spowrotem w kolejce do przekroczenia granicy w powrotnym kierunku.
