It all began well.... We took a taxi to the beautiful train station in Marrakech, and the taxi was less expensive than we'd been told...we met up with Harrie and Ans, a Dutch couple staying in our Riad and who happened to be traveling to Fes on the same train. We got window seats on the train, and pleasant traveling companions....We chatted, watching the scenery go by and having our questions answered by our friendly Moroccan fellow passengers. Then, during our stop in Casablanca, we began our descent into train travel hell.... 1. We were told to leave the train and go to track 4. (two flights down and two up) 2. We told to leave track 4 and go to track 7 and get on the train. (two flights down and two up) 3. We ... read more

3/20/2013 Depending upon one’s perspective, the location where one might live and work for the next two years in a country, thousands of miles away from home, might be considered pretty important information. So, on March 18, 2013, we returned to Fes (yet again) to finally discover our new hometown!!! Naturally, we considered this reunion with all 96 trainees imperative to attend, as well as another exciting milestone in our adventure. We arrived at the dar chebab in Fes just before 9 a.m (luckily) ------ after a wonderful breakfast at the Dar Anebar and an adventurous taxi ride where our driver got lost, and oddly enough, we now know Fes well enough to realize we were going the wrong way! Seems that the taxi driver “misheard” our destination. Yea, ok. So we got him reoriented and ... read more

Today was our full day to explore the city of Fez. It is said that Fez is the most complete medieval city in the Arab world and is considered to be the spiritual heart of Morocco. After breakfast, our guide for the day, Hakima, arrived and would be showing us around Fez. Our first stop of the day was the Royal Palace. It's golden doors were impressive as well as it's beautiful mosaic work. Unfortunately, visitors are not allowed to enter so this was basically just a photo stop. From here we walked along Rue Bou Khessissat in the Jewish Quarter known as the Mellah. This street was lined with homes of wood and wrought iron above a wide variety of shops. We simply walked around while Hakima explained a few things but nobody was really ... read more

3/17/2013 TITLE: ONE MORE DAY! And…..new things in an old city There is only one more day until we find out where our next two years will be spent. Will it be hot or cold? Will we sweat in the desert or freeze in the mountains? Will we be living in a small town or big city? It is hard to believe that we arrived here only two months ago. Because in that relatively short time, we have made many friends and have become part of a loving and caring family. Unfortunately, that means we will have another tearful goodbye shared with people that we care about, very soon. For both of us, practicing law in Florida seems so far removed and so very long ago. Our lives no longer resemble anything that we have known ... read more

From Moulay Idriss, we all took taxis to the nearby Roman ruins at Volubilis. Set in a fertile plain, Volubilis is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is considered to be a well preservered example of a Roman colonial town on the fringes of the Roman Empire. Abdul orgainzed for us to have a guided tour of the ruins. However, I usually tune out guides on guided tours and this tour was no exception. I was content with just walking around and checking things out at my own leisure and making up my own stories in my mind of what the various ruins were. My favorite part of the ruins were of course the brothel but also the many beautifully designed mosaics weathered from exposure to the elements for almost 2,000 years. After spending the morning ... read more

3/11/2013 It has been a week since our last blog. The first part of the week was cold and raining. It was NOT fun to walk to the dar chebab every day. Some excitement came when one night, our brother, Hamza, got into big trouble. You might remember from our descriptions that this kid is very mature for his age and extremely independent. His Mom spanked him, threatened to take his money away (he has more pocket money than all of us) and said that he will no longer go to cafes or hang around bad people. You may also remember that he is twelve years old!!!! As a cultural note, boys are pretty much allowed to do whatever they want to do (girls generally stay at home, do not hang out at cafes and are ... read more

Quelques voyageurs ... read more

3/3/2013 Anticipation builds! Life has not been dull here in Morocco and here we are, two adults, back in school, awaiting graduation and our new careers. One of the anticipatory things right now is the decision about where we will be sent for our 24 months of work after our present training is completed. Throughout the country, there are locations that have specific needs. There are locations which have host families who want only females, males or couples and cities with new youth sites (dar chebabs) that need to be developed. There are big cities and rural villages. We are not privy to any specifics of where these various locations are, but we have some preferences as to where we would like to be placed. So, here we go. Morocco is a big country, but it ... read more

2/27/13 Some things are just priceless because they are so foreign to one’s own life experiences. That sentence should and probably will stand as our mantra during our Peace Corps service. To help you better understand what we mean by this saying, let us start with our little brother Hamza and his obsession with birds. Some of you may or may not have seen some of the photos of his pigeons and the pigeon coop on the roof of our house in our prior blogs but believe us when we say that Hamza really has a HUGE interest in his brods. So there we were last night, just sitting in the living room eat dinner with “mom” and Khadija when, just like pizza delivery in the US, a beautiful white dove was delivered to the front ... read more

February 24 and 25, 2013 A great day-trip! On Sunday, February 24, 2013, we went with our family on a day-trip. Earlier in the week we thought they might be taking us on a trip, but things became more clear on Saturday night. As we sat around after dinner, our 17 year old sister (Khadija) was calling various people to see if she could get a driver for the day. There are local taxis that drive in the city and Grand Taxis (larger) which drive to other cities, but these forms of transportation merely take you and drop you off (no returns!). There is a secret network of guys (yes, only guys) who a person in the know may call that will drive you around all day for a set price. Our sister is in the ... read more
