Entering the medina in Fes, it is possible to allow yourself to be transported back hundreds years to the days when this was one of the world's major market places. The spice stalls with multi-coloured spices heaped into mountains, displays of olives, fruit and a wide variety of vegetables, then the meat stalls where sheep are being butchered right there and chickens, tied by one foot, await their turn at the block. There is no doubt about where your food comes from here. Of course it isn't just food. Berber and Arab rugs, ceramics, leather goods, silk made from agave and the list goes on. In an area where metal workers operate you seem to be able to buy just about anything that can be hammered into a shape, with smiths working in front of you ... read more

Day 7 - Fès medina, shopping! Another good nights sleep! I went to bed at 10.30, and slept solid until 7am. I went to breakfast with Heather, and met up with Cy from Boston. Breakfast was good. Today we are doing a sight seeing tour of Fès medina. We started with a short walk through a town area. There's were a few small shops with houses above; Muslims live on the left, Jews on the right, but all in harmony. The guide showed us the green and brown loose soap cream; green for domestic use, and mown for the skin. He raved in how good the skin one is; although it looks disgusting! We continued to a panoramicbr viewpoint. What a view! I had a great picture taken, a hit similar to my picture jumping at ... read more

Day 6 - Goodbye Casablanca, hello Meknes, Volubilis, AFRA Project and Fes Last night I shared a room with Heather from Toronto. Originally, she was upset at the prospect of sharing, but she accepted it, we actually got on well. As always, I slept like a baby! We set our alarms for 6am, for breakfast at 7. I was well rested, and up, showered, dressed and packed by 6.30. Breakfast was good. I went for all three course: cereal and fruit, omelette with salad and bread, then a croissant and coffee.... Hmmmm, I love my breakfast more than any other meal of the day! We set off on the tour bus at 8am. Everyone was on time and ready to go. We expect to be stopping in about 2 hours at the imperial city of Meknes. ... read more

Today started off with our guide, Momo, taking us to Dar el-Makhzen, the Royal Palace of Fez. Unfortunately, visitors are not allowed inside the palace but we did get to admire the colourful outer brass doors and blue décor. The next stop was the Jewish cemetery. The Jewish cemetery is a reminder of the once thriving Jewish community in Fez. It was interesting to see the difference between this cemetery and the ones we have back home. The Jewish cemetery unlike anything I have ever seen was all in white with round tombstones and Jewish inscriptions on the graves. After paying our respects, we headed off to the old medina of Fez. The medina of Fez is listed as a UNESCO world heritage site and is believed to be one of the world’s largest car-free urban ... read more

We were joined by the rest of the Contiki group as we left Granada early that morning to catch the ferry from Tarifa, Spain to Tangier, Morocco. Unfortunately, the bumpy and turbulent ferry ride made me queasy and I was happy when we finally reached land. For the return journey back into Spain, I will be definitely be more prepared with Gravel, given courtesy of Erin. Thanks Erin! In Tangier, the first thing we noticed when we got off the ferry were the several stray cats. We all got to hang out with the local cats at the ferry cafeteria while we waited for the bus which was inconveniently put on a later ferry. When the bus finally arrived, we met our local guide for Morocco, Mohammed. The first thing he said was this is Africa! ... read more

Took the train for an hour from Meknes to Fes. Had a little trouble finding a hotel, finally saw a sign to Riad Louna/ We followed the signs round one corner after another along increasingly narrow alleyways, finally arriving at the front door. It was like entering a magic world through a nondescript door into this beautiful house. A courtyard with palm trees and orange trees a trickling fountain in the centre and 3 floors of rooms around this. We took one on the top floor, unfortunately the ‘en-suite’ was on the ground floor. Had tea and sweet things on the roof terrace then set off to wander the medina. It was initially quite a confusing maze but we got the pattern of the streets, two main ones and then you concentrate on landmarks each time ... read more

Anyone that tells you that travelling is 100% pure, heavenly joy, is lying through their teeth. The truth is traveling consists of extreme highs, some pretty low lows, and everything in between. For me, the highest of the highs occurs even before I leave home. For months leading up to a trip, randomly a thought will enter my head and interrupt whatever I am doing, reminding myself of my upcoming trip. It always brings a smile to my face, as if I have the best secret ever, that no one else can possibly understand. Then in the days leading up to travel, I can feel the excitement literally coursing through my veins. The idea of not knowing what is about to occur is both exhilarating and somewhat scary. The actual bulk of the trip is usually ... read more

The day started with a field trip. Although there may have been a few alleyways we had not yet walked in the medina of Fes, we headed out of town to two interesting settlements. Bhalil is a small town with interesting troglodyte homes built into the hillsides. The Berbers have lived here for hundreds of years, and many (but not all) of the homes have a cave as a portion of the house. It never became clear to me whether these were enhanced natural formations or were completely carved out for dwellings. They offer the usual cave advantage of evening out hot and cold temperatures. The houses in this town are painted in various colors. Although I have read of a pottery industry here, the only current industry seems to be the production of jellaba buttons, ... read more

Fes. Ancient city. Quintessential Morocco. Not to be confused with fez, a hat, usually with a tassel, often red, worn throughout Morocco and many other countries. We ended our day in Fes, and awoke the next morning to something closer to the Morocco which had imagined. Our visit to Fes began with arrival at Riad Fes. This being our first experience with a riad, we were stunned by the beauty and by the service we encountered. It was almost oppressive to our American tastes to have someone catering to our every whim, but we decided we must accommodate and managed to carry on under the burden. Although Fes has two medinas, the larger was the one where we spent time, and our riad was on the upslope edge of the medina, giving us panoramic views of ... read more
