Day 10 - leaving Todra Gorge, going to Aït Ben Haddou I woke up naturally this morning at about 6.30am... Then snoozed until about 7! Ooohhh... My aching hips! When I put my feet to the floor I felt like I had no legs! That bloody camel! ... Lol I went outside on the terrace, which I not noticed before, it's so nice out there! The water runs by the side of the hotel, there's a pool, a lounge area, sun beds etc, it's so peaceful, and picturesque out there! I nearly missed it! Everyone made it for breakfast at 8am; it was pancakes and jam today, with added choice of boiled eggs and bread, and as always, coffee, tea and orange juice. We set off at 9am to go to Aït Ben Haddou. The first ... read more

Day 9 - Goodbye Merzouga, hello Todra Gorge Another early morning, but today was different, no alarm, just Marcel! It was his wish to do the morning assault call! He did it well. We were up and away very quickly. The camels were ready and waiting for us. We slowly trekked our way back across the Sahara to the hotel. It was about an hour trek. On the way we stopped to watch an amazing sunrise unfold across the horizon. We arrived back at the hotel, I was not too cold in my body, as I was well wrapped up from head to toe.... But Awww.... My hands were like ice, I could barely move them! We went in for breakfast, everyone went straight to the hot coffee. The first one was just to warm my ... read more

Day 8 - Goodbye Fes, hello Atlas Mountains and Sahara desert/Merzouga Ohhhh.... It was an early start this morning! I was up at 4.55, breakfast at 5.15. Really, it was ok for me as I went to bed at 8.45! I got showered, watched an episode of Suits on Netflix, then slept like a baby, as always! Breakfast today was scrambled eggs, bread and cheese, followed by pain de chocolate with coffee. Very nice it was too! I brought my bag down with me this morning, so I'm good to go! Haled came through with 3 pairs of socks..yayyyy... My warmer world is now complete, and just in time for our visit to the Atlas Mountains. When I was in Taghazout, I was warned about the cold and snow in the north, I was not disappointed! ... read more

We were in the High Atlas region in my last blog. I chose the wrong section. We are now in the Anti-Atlas. We left Tinghir this morning after two nights. The hotel wasn't very good. The one now is fantastic. I have only 20 minutes before dinner, so just some notes. Three of us went to the haman, the bath. Very different from all the others I've gone to. (The Korean one in Atl., the Swedish one in Copenhagan, plenty of Turkish ones, even the one in Phila in the vast areas under the city.) Our guide had arranged for two women to take care of us. We each paid 100 dirham and we got scrubbed, oiled, washed with olive oil soap and had several warm buckets of water poured over us. There were a lot ... read more

Today we were to visit typical places, not general tourist places. We first went to the weekly market and practiced our Arabic buying the ingredients for our dinner. In three teams, we got veges, and fruits. My team was responsible for the chicken, to be purchased in a different market. Much of the market reminded me of the Missouri flea markets. Then we went to the fields where the women were oicking alfalfa for the animals. After that, a boarding school for boys from outlying Berber communities. Our IAT travels help support the school. It reminded me of schools in other developing countries. We all brought books and notebooks and other school supplies. The chicken place was very interesting. The killing is done in the halal way, cut the throat and drain the blood by dropping ... read more

Greetings my lovely readers! This entry will be short as I haven't been feeling well. I just wanted to send a quick update that I'm alive and considerably well as I've received several emails concerning my whereabouts. About four or five days ago I met up with my travel group in Casablanca and we've been traveling all around Morocco. I got really lucky because they are all lovely people. There's the mother-daughter duo from New Zealand, the father daughter team from Australia, aunt and her niece from the Midwest, Italian woman and her Austrian boyfriend, middle-aged German woman, and then three solo travelers including myself--one guy from Italy and one from Australia. Chris, the Australian dude & I took an instant liking to one another and connected immediately over music, graphic novels, and then he blew ... read more

Once we found our riad we were really impressed with the beauty of it. It had beautiful architecture and a beautiful courtyard. And luckily the girl that worked there spoke English so Tyler was finally able to communicate with someone other than me. They brought us tea and gave us a map outlining the main sites of the medina. From there we were brought to our room. Our room was gorgeous and was decorated with beautiful Moroccan woodwork. However one strange thing........ no door on the bathroom. It was just wide open in the room. Tyler and I ran into this problem in Thailand and worked out a system of one person waiting outside while the other used the washroom. We used this system again. The shower was also open with no curtain or anything which ... read more

Week 3 continued It was difficult to know what to expect but we felt quite excited about the prospect of camping three nights in the desert. We approached the dunes on a very uneven track and pulled into a large level area which happened to be next to a camel station and even more surprisingly a very smart looking Auberge. Our tour leader had omitted to tell us about this hotel which had toilets, showers, a restaurant, live music and even a swimming pool which we were allowed to use! The sun shone on us and we were all delighted to be in such a special place with stunning views of the ever changing sand dunes – our favourite location so far. The second day we were there a group of us decided to picnic in ... read more

Week 3 Having left quite a good campsite in Fes, we stopped at an unusual site in Azrou which had been built by a Saudi sheik and looked like something from Disneyland! Apparently the apartments alongside the site are to be used for holiday breaks for orphans but were not open yet. The next stage of our journey took us through a very barren landscape leaving the green and fertile land behind. Everywhere we go there are happy, smiling children waving at us - the adults are not quite as demonstrative but many are pleased to greet us, mainly in French. We eventually arrived at a campsite at the Source Bleu de Meski. It sounded like an exotic oasis resort which it may have been in the 1950's but now it is very rundown and the ... read more

We were four bleary eyed travellers waiting outside our apartment in the French Quarter of Marrakech. It was early, that morning, as we observed the stirring of life and the awakening of the village. Savouring the taste of our recent strong black coffee, we inhaled the brisk morning air, and shrugged off our backpacks. The welcome and expected arrival of Rachid and Mustapha loomed toward us in the form of their sleek black mini van which would transport us to another place, and to another time. Little did we realise the extent of the adventure we were about to embark upon, and the lifetime bond we were going to share. Welcoming smiles greeted us, as their faces appeared through the front windscreen. Rachid, with his twinkling eyes, and a raised eyebrow, that promised a time to ... read more
