Well, we made it safe and sound out of Africa. Boy, what a trip so far. We are now on the island of Mauritius -- it's beautiful. Weather is so-so. Cloudy, but a lot of sun too. We were thoroughly impressed with Africa. Friendly people -- at least where we were -- who were anxious to tell us about their lives. And the wildlife....WOW! It must be like what Lewis and Clark experienced when they travelled in North America 200 years ago. Herds and herds of animals and a lot of different species. The last day, we saw a Leopard and her cub on the way to the airstrip. Joyce got teary when we lifted off from the Okavango. Well, cheers for now. The Internet here keeps going down, so I will have to sign off. ... read more

Our first visit to Mauritus Our flight from Melbourne left a bit later than scheduled, however they made the time up somewhere over the Indian Ocean. For the most part it was uneventful, but seemed to take forever. We landed on time in Plaisance and cleared customs in no time at all. Our first impression of the airport was that it was not unlike Fiji, but there was nobody hasslig us to buy this or that or to take their taxis, so it was quite pleasant... A guy called Manuèl met us with a sign and took us over to his van for the trip to the hotel... What can we say, but WOW that was some hell of a ride... The main highway in Mauritus is quite well built, but the traffic is something else... ... read more

Hello from Mauritius! We'll warn you that this blog might not be as exciting as usual since we spent the week on the beach in Mauritius and it was a "vacation from the vacation". Mauritius? Most of you probably haven't ever heard about Mauritius, like us, when our travel agent told us that we would have a lay over there on our way to Asia. But we looked it up and it is a small island in the Indian Ocean east of Madagascar and we figured why not spend a week there because when else would we get to go to Mauritius. The Plan We had tried booking an all-inclusive thing from Africa and that didn't pan out since we are now in a dispute with the travel agent and VISA (its a really long story....and ... read more

Mauritius is an island off the coast of Madagascar of which Mark Twain has said: "you gather the idea that Mauritius was made first, and then heaven; and that heaven was copied after Mauritius." It lives up to it's illustrious reputation. We chose to stay, twice, at the Hilton Spa Resort, and our stays there were pure magic. Torch Lighting Ceremony We arrived in the afternoon, and a gong was rung by the hotel staff upon our entry, as is the tradition with all guests, to the spectacular architecture of gardens, waters, and lounges. It was soon dusk, and as night fell, we heard an enchanting African song rising swiftly by the beach, with a chorus of children singing in the refrain. Along the garden walkways and bridges, over the intricate natural pools, the hotel staff ... read more

“Oceans apart day after day, and I slowly go insane. I hear your voice on the line but it doesn’t stop the pain...” - Richard Marx Mauritius (More-ish-us) I was going to edit this entry because it’s not very uplifting, but the more I thought about it, I didn’t think it would be fair to you or me to sensor it to make my experience here something different than it was. There’s a quote from Mark Twain about Mauritius and I shouldn’t even quote it because its not exact, I didn’t write it down fast enough when I heard it, but it’s something like this: “Mauritius was made first, then heaven and they copied heaven from Mauritius…”The way Twain said it is more eloquent than my version of it, but it’s the same point… The morning ... read more

After some of my past journal entries this one is going to be relatively short. As our substitute for Kenya we went to Mauritius for three days. It is a small island/ country in the Indian Ocean near the north east coast of Madagascar. From what we heard previous to coming to Mauritius it is paradise. Mark Twain made some sort of quote about God creating Mauritius and then creating Heaven after and modeling it after Mauritius. Well, we all hope that wasn’t true. Don’t get me wrong, it was really nice. Beautiful white sand beaches and clear turquoise water and plummeting waterfalls. But that seems to be where it ends. It’s just a really nice island in my opinion, nothing spectacular. This could be my still-disappointed-about-Kenya mouth talking, but I think I’m not augmenting the ... read more

Driving down to Port Louis, in the extended rush hour, normally until 9:30 am but when it rains, and because money is scarce for the majority of the population in Mauritius, car tyres are as bold as my Dad's head. So as to avoid the famous “aquaplaning” in Mauritius which actually looks like water skiing, instead of driving at the permitted speed limit in Mauritius on the dual carriage way : 90 KMS an hour Mauritian drivers have "grinded" to a 35 km, stop and go, for the 30 kilometre stretch from Floréal to Port Louis, the capital of Mauritius. It seems the sun will not be here for quite a few days still. The poor tourists who, since arriving in Mauritius, have only had rain for nearly 2 weeks, what a holiday for them - ... read more
