Well! After madly packing up the house, moving, unpacking, and cleaning our rental place, Clinton and I were ready at 11pm the night before we were to head off!!! Very very last minute job as per usual. We didn't get any shopping done so we're without quite a few important items! As I have just found out, we didn't bring our vaccination certificates with us which I've been freaking out over, however we've just been advised that a photocopy (which I have) *should* be ok, we just might be charged a fine for not having the original... every time we pass a border. It is very annoying.. but glad we can still go on the tour! We've done nothing in Mauritius as of yet. Both very jet lagged, and moving weary! Tomorrow we might go on ... read more

I am very excited to say that the event that culminated my time here in Geneva has now come and gone. I held a very successful conference in Mauritius on the textile and clothing industry in sub-Saharan Africa. AND I got to see (some of) Mauritius. The conference had 30 participants, and although there were some hiccups and people not coming, all in all it went really well. As my first major event planning job in my life, I am very happy to say that it went really well - the discussions were lively, progress was made in getting people in the region up to date, and lots of networking went on amongst the participants. The hotel was amazing; I was completely impressed as this was my first chance to stay in a 5 star hotel. ... read more

In all honestly, I never heard of this tiny African island before I knew I was going to be one of our ports on Semester at Sea. I was happy just to be getting on land again after a week of incredibly rocky waters due to a slight brush with a cyclone coming around the southern coast of the African continent. It’s a little unsettling to have your plates and utensils move around the table on their own if they aren’t held down. We were told that our three days in Mauritius were going to be equivalent to a Spring Break, which was convenient since there is not a whole lot to do there except go to beaches, which are quite beautiful. The number of bays on the coast are home to a variety of ... read more

Sunday/Monday At 10am it was announced that the cyclone Gamede has passed Mauritius and was no longer a threat. We would have updated the blog earlier, but we had no power from Sunday morning until some where between 4 and 7am Monday morning. Once the power was back we were still struggling to get a internet connection. But finally we got online were able to update the blog. Sunday we went for a drive and the waves were enormous on the west coast, but luckily there was not much dammage. Of course there were broken palm trees and branches lying around, billboards torn apart as well loose pieces that had been picked up by the wind. All in all, we did not think it was an especially bad storm. We have not been diving yet as ... read more

Pappa visiting Relaxing on the beach, sun bathing, swimming, and then some more relaxing on the beach, sun bathing, swimming and then Pappa was ready for exploration of the island. So amongst eating Bruno’s fantastic cooking both at Coco de Mer and at his home we did some sightseeing: Port Louis Market Fruit and vegetable market as well as the meat and fish market. It is a big contrast from what we are used to in Europe and North America with strict regulations on handling live stock and meat. It is definitively worth a visit just to feel the hustle and bustle. Joachim and me are acclimatised and went strait on from the food market to the food stalls, but Pappa was not very hungry afterwards. Visit to Tamil temple In Mauritius there are many temples ... read more

Yes, we saw a group of Bigfin reef Squid at Peter Holt’s Rock. They quite small and only get up to 35 cm, but it must have been about 20 of them just “hanging” there on the edge of the reef. We had to leave them as our dive time was up. But what a great experience got some ok photos as well. Check out the video we took: http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=Mikisoq Also we both finished the Divemaster theory today. So all eight are now done and we have only practical things to do. Juuuhhhuuu!!! :) Wish you all a great weekend. ps. to see a larger version of the images on the blog, just click on them.... read more
