A week in the lap of luxury at the Oberoi hotel in Mauritius. Four course breakfasts, deep sunken marble bath and polished marble floors, four poster bed and a health spa with your own jacuzzi. The service is amazing, there are 250 staff for 76 rooms! The location is lush, palm trees, exotic flowers and birds, with a back drop of mountains and sunsets across the Indian Ocean - when it's not raining. We're going to Rwanda tomorrow, we've never written that before...... read more

After a very long 12 hour flight to Mauritius we started our descent over the island. The plane came to life as everyone craned their necks in anticipation to get the first exciting glimpse of paradise. Then my boyfriend pipes up and says 'oh, it looks a bit like Scotland'. Talk about passion killer, he may have well said 'your bum looks particularly enormous today'! By the scowl on my face he quickly retreated back into the High Life magazine and didn't volunteer any further thoughts. But I hated to admit it did look a bit like Scotland - very green and lots of mountains. On the ground, thank God, Mauritius is nothing like Scotland. As we drove through miles and miles of sugar cane fields with the sun shining and in warm tropical breeze blowing ... read more

Reunion After 3 days at sea, we arrived at the Island of Reunion on Monday the 21st of April. It is a French Protectorate and it did not take us long to realize it! We all got loaded on our buses for the various tours and the Taxis decided to call a surprise strike and blocked the exit from the port with cabs so none of the buses could leave. The Cabbies wanted access to the Port and claimed the buses were taking away all their business. After a couple of hours of negotiation, they finally opened the gates. Needless to say, everyone started the day with a bitter memory. We took a tour to St. Denis, which is the largest city on the Island. The mountains are pretty dramatic and rise straight up to over ... read more

We arrived early morning and walked into town (which took about 15 minutes) rather than take the ferry, just to see a little of the local life. In the event, our seeking of an internet cafe took us to a shopping centre close to where our fellow passengers were arriving. M did the internet stuff whilst D took a few beers on the waterfront with a fellow passenger from Wales. Mauritius is an independent country in Africa. The republic of Mauritius is part of the Mascarene Islands, a group of islands created by volcanic activity in the Indian Ocean. The Republic of Mauritius includes the main island of Mauritius and the island of Rodrigues to the east of Mauritius, as well as many smaller islands and archipelagos. The Republic of Mauritius thus includes the North Island ... read more

Thursday 27th December Tana Airport 13:06 (UK), 16:06 (Madagascar) In approximately 54 minutes I will be heading down the runway and leaving this Fair Isle. A month has passed very quickly and I feel I have done a lot, seen a lot, learnt a lot, and changed a bit. You know, I think I have managed to slow down. Just a little bit, but I am fine with dead time now. There has to be some time in which nothing particular happens and in which you have time to be with your thoughts and yourself. I have never previously been content with this time. In Madagascar things move at such an unimaginably slow time that you have to quickly adapt to having this extra time in which you are waiting for something that allows the next ... read more

We decided to go to Mauritius to visit a mate of ours from London, but due to a bit of a cock up with telephone numbers and dates, unfortunately he wasn't even on the island when we arrived! Determined to make the best of a bad job, and not knowing much about Mauritius, we scoured the web in search of information about places to stay and things to do here. We finally settled on a little place towards the North of the island called Pereybere, and landed a pretty nice unit complete with all mod-cons, sea-views and a pet kitten?! At some point of the the bus journey from the airport to Pereybere, we wondered if we were even in Mauritius. It was almost like being in India with the huge Hindi population prominent in all ... read more

We arrived on Mauritius on September 2nd in the morning and, after haggling with the taxi drivers, got a ride up the east coast to the little town of Trou d’Eau Deuce. We spent two days here walking around the town, relaxing on the small beach area to the north near Belle Mare, and enjoying the local food. Having come in the spring and before the tourist season the area was very quiet. The weather for the most part was nice but the water was too cool for swimming or snorkelling. On the 4th we took the local bus up to Centre de Flac and then on to Port Louis on the north west side of the island. Port Louis is the largest city on the island and has some interesting museums we wanted to check ... read more

Had an amazing ten days in mauritius chilling out to the max. We were so tired and emotional for the first few days I can hardly even remember it but I think it's fair to say we have never encountered such luxury before. They actually didn't let you lift a finger, to the point where it was quite embarassing. The food was brilliant big massive buffets every night and we had a romantic candlelight dinner on the last night which was very special. Whole resort was lovely, totally tailored for couples with wee private spots and four poster beds looking out to sea around the beach and stuff - amazing. We did alot of the free watersports put on for us -wake boarding - which sparks could do immediatley because he is annoying like that - ... read more
