Wieder ereignisreicher Tag. Ich wollt nach Tabaka. Dort machen die Leute aus dem weichen Soapstone (Specksteim) alle möglichen Sachen, Tiere, Untersetzer, Figuren... Und genau das wollte ich sehen. Zurst die A1, meist geteert, dann rechts ab, Schotterstraße. Und endlich erreichte ich den Ort. Gleichzeitig verschwand die Straße, übrig waren nur noch Dreckhaufen, Steine, tiefe Mulden - alles was das Herz begehrt. Ich hielt an um zu überlegen, ob ich mich blamieren und umkehren sollte, oder mich blamieren sollte, weil ich beim Weiterfahren garantiert umfallen würde. Aber noch vor ich da zu irgendwelchen Gedanken kam, war ich umringt von der größten Menschenmenge, die ich je um mich hatte. Einer hatte einen Blaumann an und sprach viel mit mir. Impala Sanctuary. Eintritt 22 $, aber Einheimische zahlen fast nix. Eine sinnvolle Preisgestaltung, denn wir haben ja das Geld. Freilaufend nur Affen, in Gehegen Tiger, Löwen, Giraffe Büffel, alles Problemtiere, die nicht ausgewildert werden können. Zahllose Schulklassen, die sich hervorragend benahmen, schöner Blick auf Lake Victoria, zweitgrößter See der Welt. Am Schluss, "sie kommen immer um 14.00' - Impalas. Und eine große Eidechse, die vorsichtshalber zum Fütterungsplatz gelaufen ist. Aber Futter gibt's erst am Mittwoch. Nationalmuseum Kenias: der traurigste Anblick, den man sich vorstellen kann. Glaskästen, schlecht erleuchtet, voller ausgestopfter Tiere. Aber noch schlimmer waren die Aquarien und besonders die Schlangen in den Terrarien, Kies, eine Schale mit Wasser. OK, been a long time since we blogged from the school at Christmas and the weeks since then has been split into three main parts: 1) Awassa Ethiopia was lovely, escaped the dust of the school town to a nice lakeside setting where we gobbled fish, watched the birds and drank freezing beer. We chilled for a couple of days and got used to being back on the road. Celebrated a non-New Year, it being the 22/04/05 or whatever it was in Ethiopia then be headed off for the road to Kenya 2) The road to Kenya. I escaped Nairobi on a fittingly disgusting morning and got a bus to Kisumu, where after about 8 hours, I arrived into some sunshine. I stayed in Kisumu with Christina, who I had met in Mombasa. As it was a Saturday, we went out that night and predictably enough, the Sunday was fairly unproductive. Of all the places I had been in Kenya up to now, this was the first where tourists would not regularly come. They seemed to be fairly used to the mzungus all the same. There was also a surprisingly big Indian community. Kisumu is situated right on Lake Victoria, my first contact with Africa's biggest lake. It's been a month today that I left the United States of America for the far western bush of Kenya in East Africa. I love it! I traveled far but the journey is worth the time here. I am in a place that is green, which it isn't green in Texas where I reside normally. Beautiful hills, livestock, and chickens galore!! Every time I hear a squawk I know there is another egg waiting to be hatched or eaten whatever the case may be! The orphanage where I am visiting sits on some beautiful land out in the bush, as the Kenyan people say. It sits on rolling, green hills as far as the eye can see.
