More people arriving, and some more last minute preparations going on to attempt to accommodate the increase in numbers. The Birmingham students were here for six weeks, but until the Family were due to leave in a couple days, they had to make do with using the floor of the small office and store floors over in the main building. One of the guys was grateful to have the loan of my sleeping mat till such time as that had occurred. There were two girls and three guys. From the sounds of it the girls had signed up early, and it was a drive over the next few months before they were due to leave to round up some guys. With the arrival of the students some of the other projects were able to be instigated. ... read more

The Mother Cathy asked if it was ok to give the kids a bit of a checkup. She said there was not much she could do, as generally to diagnose nowadays relies on tests and results which she would not have access to. Still, she could do a general general. A few of the kids suffered from basic malnutrition, and anemia. Things like lack of protein and iron. There is not a lot of meat going around. Writing this from the end, I didn't eat any meat while at the centre. Cathy went along with her family to the medical centre as she had bought a couple of general drugs that she wanted to hand over to someone that was medically inclined in return for some checkups for the centre. It sounded like there were no ... read more

Finally some new people have arrived. They are only here for a week, but still I am pretty happy as the amount of alone time I was getting, was... well getting to me. They consisted of a 5 person non-christian english family who had managed to persuade the people that they could only come for a week (I think the normal minimum was the two weeks I had taken). I think they were the Bex's or something, and this was their first 'volunteer' thing. Mother (GP), Father, 18 yo son, 17 yo daughter and a 14 yo daughter. Nice people, Richard the father was really good with the kids, he wanted to let them play with the camera, teach them football, talk with them, teach them to write their names etc. He probably had the greatest ... read more

Well that crappy mosquito net. Im basically living on prayers against Malaria as the net is only minimal help and as its the dry season and their are less Mosquitos almost too much of a pain to even bother using. I have a couple ichy bites... Outside of planting the trees which I only do during the morning and evening, I spend most of my time reading. I should get involved with the kids, but I can't, by principle it feels like men in NZ have been demonised in their involvement with kids, so although I could probably do some good, I have refused to get involved with them. On principle I would rather read.... read more

I had arrived in the dry season. Like Uganda there are not seasons perse, more just a dry and wet season. The ground at the centre was terrible. They had what looked like a failed maize crop behind the chicken coup where the chickens used to live when they had some alive, they had run out of food and the chickens died... Anyway, I planted these four trees for them. I said the ground was too hard so I tried digging a base hole then filling it with donkey poes and some chicken poe and sawdust mix. I tried to tell them that if we at least made it easier for the roots of the small trees to get started by the time the wet season came around we could hope the ground softens sufficiently for ... read more

The girls, the girls being the teachers and tailors so the 20-26ish yearolds who work at the centre, play netball... with a soccer ball... and wooden posts that arnt straight... on a court with stones and thorns and dying grass. But now at least they know that Mizongus can jump! Mizongu is what they call white people, not sure what it really means, maybe best I didn't ask. Netball was way fun though, course with my natural resistance to cardiovascular activities I was now to be stiff and sore for the next two days. I met Pauline who was the main teacher there. She like Eddy was a lovely person, makes me a bit sad thinking back now about them. They and a number of others were all wonderful people, but their lives were hard. You ... read more

Well I made it through that first night. It really was not too bad, but so not what I am used to. Looking back at this Eddys shack is really a palace compared to some of the 'houses' around here. The camping Mosquito net sucks. Not sure if I mentioned it, as I used it briefly in Zimbabwe too, but its a horrible thing. Its more like a sheet with holes in it. So when you use it, it claustrophobia's around your face. When I used it in the centre, I had a bunk bed, so tied it to the slat of the bed above me, but it still hangs over you like a sheet. Its not quite big enough, I'm sure my feet or hands or face was always popping out. Needless to say I ... read more

WoW. Talk about being sent out in the whops! I am slightly panicey with regards to what have I gotten myself iinto. Now I didnt realise this when I signed up but Bondo is like an all day bus trip out of Nairobi leaving at about 9am. The road seems to remain tar seal for most of the trip, that being the 7 hours from Nairobi to Kisumu. The final couple hours, maybe 2 from Kisumu to Bondo is tar seal, then it kind of disappears to dirt road, for the last half hour-ish. All I was thinking was if this guy Eddy was not waiting for me in Bondo like he was supposed to, I would be stuffed. I usually feel a bit uneasy, being the only white person even in major cities, you kind ... read more

Merry Christmas everyone! And, Merry, Happy whatever other holidays you may observe this time of year. Since this season is a time of giving, gathering and good wishes, my greeting of Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, or Happy New Year holds hope for peace and good life for all. Although I returned to the U.S. from Africa almost five months ago, I’ve wanted to write more blogs of my experiences. And, so for Christmas, I decided to send my greeting to you in the story of last Christmas, which I spent in Oyugis, Kenya. Looking back to one year ago, I was at the Mama na Dada (mother and sister) program in Kunya Village. This is the village where I helped in the clinic, Kunya Dispensary, and financed the building of new shelves and some other improvements ... read more

So this is our time to catch up on some blog posts! We are now back in Kenya in the bigger towns, so our lack of a functional internet service is behind us! I truly cannot believe that we are almost done with our sumer long journey!!! It has been incredible! To fill you all in about our life the last little while, it must start with our adventure crossing yet another boarder (joining Uganda and Kenya) on foot!! I am not sure if we mentioned this in one of first blogs, but prior to leaving on our trip Katie had a 'nightmare' about having to cross the boarder on foot, unlike what occurs in Canada where we have our cars etc. So every time we have to cross a boarder we laugh because even if ... read more
