Hello All..it seems the pictures did not come through. So I will try again. I am being treated like one of the Gilani Family attending parties and dinners with Munira and Hanif. Their circle of friends and family are so warm and hospitable. I am still battling jet lag...have now taken Judith's advice not to nap in the afternoon..despite overwhelming need too!. Munira treated me to a massage yesterday...does wonders for jet lag. Was also reminded how conservative we North Americans are about body treatments. I started to venture outside on my own yesterday..first walking the 5 blocks home from the Gilani home and then this morning going for a brisk walk. It is interesting being pretty much the only white girl on the street. And yes the streets are safe here around the hotel-- that ... read more

Jambo (Hello in Swahili), I have now been in Kisumu some 36 hours. I have settled wonderfully into the Imperial Hotel as the guests of the Gilani Family. Munira, my most generous host and new friend, views the hotel as an extension of her home and indeed the hospitality here is warm and inviting. The hotel staff have been expecting me and have welcomed me with open arms. I was met at the Kisumu airport yesterday by Munira and over 100 school children on a field trip. No she claims not to have arranged that (see photo) It brought tears to my eyes. I also spotted the Ground Flight Safety Buidling -- took a picture for Dave. I also spied my first grass roofed hut as we circled the edge of Lake Victoria (largest fresh water ... read more

Bonjourno! Another VERY long one, but it has been two weeks, so lots to cover, and I promise you it’ll make you think in places. It’ll also definitely make you laugh at me. Enjoy the photos - the connection here is good, and the photos are low quality so it really didn’t take long to upload them. Thought I’d treat you near the end of my travels, especially after the blog length. But it’s quantity over quality. Have fun. I survived Nairobi! Quite chuffed by this statement I am, especially as I went back through the city and stayed a night in the doomed River Road district. I would have normally bypassed this place, but Afsan had kindly dropped in from Boston, and having got on well climbing Mt Kinabalu together, a catch-up drink seemed the ... read more

I have just spent my first night properly camping - the last few nights at the Masai Mara was pretty luxurious, the tents were already put up for us and we had a platform to sleep on. Last night was a different story, we arrived at Kisumu near Lake Victoria and had to endure the trauma of putting up our own tents, the bloody cheek of it. The mosquitoes were the size of jumbo jets, I was absolutely terrified. I drowned myself in 100% DEET and watched and laughed as the mozzies flew into my pasty white legs and died instantly. If anyone is thinking of making a quick trip to Kisumu, bring a burkha.....!... read more

I think I am pretty spoiled with good food all the time and never really appreciated the food that is available everywhere in Kenya. It seems ugali is the Kenyan national food with almost everyone likes to eat. Ugali is just a bit like the raggi balls in Bangalore, India. Except the Ugali is made with maize flour. It really has no taste by itself, it can be pretty blah when you compare it with most Indian food. But having said that if anyone (non Indian, of course!) ate idli by itself without the sambar, I reckon he would hate it... any way, ugali generally served with meat soup or sukuma wiki (collards). It's ok I guess, but it really puts me to sleep. I should say my favourite food is githeri. They put the maize ... read more

I travelled from Kisumu a couple of days ago. The trip was totally amazing, the train was quite slow compared to Indian trains, but the scenery was nice. If you are in a hurry to catch a plane or something, you better not travel in the train. The chance of you arriving in Nairobi on time is very very rare. ... read more
