Woke up at 6:00 and called Tonash. Matt instructed him to go into Jahwill's house and wake him. We talked to Jahwill and only got "Ch" out when he asked what hotel we were at and where to meet us. He never called back. We thought our trip was pretty much done at this point and talked about what else we could do for the weekend. We called Tonash back multiple times and he told us that Jahwill wasn't there. He then finally told us that he was going to Ho to meet us at Chances Hotel. JAHWILL SHOWED UP! We were ecstatic and FINALLY on our way to BENIN!!! We got a ride to the tro-tro station and passed the CCS van on the way which was pretty interesting. We hopped on a tro-tro to ... read more

Woke up and went to Christ Orphanage. Mark, a previous CCS volunteer returned and also went to Christ. He is the first volunteer to actually come back and see the progress that has been made there. Maria, Diana, Matt, Jahwill and I left Hohoe for the weekend to travel to Benin which is two countries over on the east side of Ghana, right after Togo. We left Hohoe with little time to get to Ho before the border/visa place closed. Diana was feeling really sick. When they finally approved our visas they made us pay a "processing" fee of $5.00 extra. We ran into a missionary there that urged us to take Diana to the hospital. He even gave us a ride in his truck and offered to take us to an American hospital in Togo. ... read more

Went to Christ in the morning feeling awful. I had a really bad sore throst and a blocked runny nose. Christ was pretty uneventful today, although Linda did get her head shaved. I was pretty upset. She no longer looks like the same crazy little girl and it really felt like a little bit of her spirit was gone. I got home from Christ and went into town to run some errands. While I was on the bike, someone walking cut in front of me. I slammed on the brakes and I completely crashed and skidded against the gravel road. And of course this was right in front of Miss Ghana (a statue in the town centre) which is in the roundabout in Downtown Hohoe. I got up and people surrounded me saying "Ohhh sorry sorry." ... read more

Woke up and went to observe HIV Counseling at Hohoe District Hospital for placement. It was so interesting. To be tested for HIV it costs 50 pesewa (about 50 US cents) and results are read within 15 minutes. Believe me, it's a long 15 minutes. They make you sit in the room and you basically stare at the test with the nurse. I was able to sit in on three different tests and you literally sit there in silence for 15 minutes If results are read as positive, a second saliva test is given. If the second deems positive, counseling is immediately given to the patient. I was actually pretty impressed with their counseling program. I observed a girl in the clinic who couldn't have been older than 16. She tested HIV positive. It was really ... read more

Woke up and headed to the orphanage. The building was not yet complete so that was a little bit of a bummer. I tried to teach my class how to play Uno which was a bust. They honestly cannot follow any kind of direction. When we got home from Christ John, Emily, Jackie, Diana, and I headed to the tro-tro station to make a 600 km, one day excursion to Accra. Why would one go to Accra, a four hour drive, for a single day you may ask? TO GET A CHEESEBURGER!!! We've been planning a day trip to Frankie's American Restaurant since last week, so we piled into a public tro-tro and 3.5 hours later (we made REALLY good time,) we were in Accra. We first went to Accra Mall. Two words: SCARY and OVERWHELMING. ... read more

Woke up at 11:00 which was super amazing! We took a two day trip to Mountail Paradise Lodge, the place where I spent Saturday of last weekend. Diana, Maria, Rebecca, Emily, Hope and I were all in desparate need of a girls weekend, one with NO drama and total relaxation. We all shared a taxi and had such a wonderful weekend. At night on the mountaintop it does get fairly cold (about 70 degrees) so it was really nice to wear sweatpants for once. Our "girls girls" weekend consisted of laying and round and talking nonstop. We ate dinner, laid around, and went to bed early which was super nice. Saturday morning Rebecca and I woke up at 7:30 planning to go on a nature hike. It's funny that back at home 7:30 is treacherous, but ... read more

Woke up this morning and we were again informed that we sould not be going to Christ. Instead of going to Christ I went to the monkey sanctuary with the Eugemot Orphanage group which was really fun. The kids were really interested in seeing the monkeys. All thirty kids fit in a tro tro with Jackie, Matt, Diana, myself, and the driver. The kids at Eugemot are much different than the kdis at Christ. While they are really well behaved which is nice, they are also much more withdrawn. They don't really get excited to see you likt the kids at Christ do. There were two little girls there, Sarah and Doreen, that were super sweet. They sing a song at Eugemot that goes: "If you want to come to orphanage, see the master, write your ... read more

The uncle of Raymond, the headmaster of Christ Orphanage died last night so none of us went to placement at Christ. I went to the herbalist/bone cutter instead. At the bone setter we saw an injured baby and multiple people with broken bones, bed sores, etc. Nothing was too disturbing which was a minor letdown. We went out and had a Coca Cola with the bone setter while he had a beer instead...and went back to work being a doctor right after. Every ailment is treated with the same herb. Errands ALL afternoon which got pretty annoying. Played pool at Malaysias right after. So much drama here right now with this curfew stuff you wouldn't believe!... read more

I was expecting to start the day off at Hohoe Hospital doing HIV Counseling but the head of teh unit was ill so I have to go back next week. I went to Christ with no lesson plan which is an adventure in itself. We read a book together and worked on writing letters to America. When we got to Christ Rachel and Patience were so excited to see me. Sistofe again thanked us for buying her shoes. After placement I ate lunch and climbed Mt. Afadjato with British Rebecca. The mountain is about 20 minutes past WLI Waterfalls. It is the tallest mountain in West Africa. We met with our guide and set out for a 45 minute climb. The climb was much more brutal than I anticipated. It was pretty much a straight ascent. ... read more

Today was really challenging. The kids in my class really didn't care to listen to anything I had to say. After lunch, Emily and I went back to the orphanage to pick up the oldest four girls to have a girls day. Sistofe, Patience, Togbe Rachel, and Esinu are all between 6-8 years old and never get to act like kids. They are constantly caring for other kids at the orphanage. When we arrived in the blue van they were really excited to see us. When they found out that they got to leave with us they had really confused looks on their faces and were ecstatic. I told Sistofe to get her shoes and she told me she didn't have shoes. We all piled into the van and it was nonstop chatter from thereon. Dela ... read more
