HAPPY EASTER! Woke up at 6:00 as we were supposed to be at Christ by 7:30. Got a really late start and arrived at 8:00. It didn't matter though; the service started at 10:00. Ghana time. Everything starts at least and hour after the scheduled time. No wonder they don't get anything done around here. The service was really something to see. Instead of having a designated start time, the bell rings for the first time when the travelling priest arrives at the church. It rings a second time roughly 45 minutes later to let you know church is about to begin. The kids looked so precious in their super extravagant Easter outfits. When we got to the church the music was unbelievable. As the service started, a little boy that was sitting by me pooped ... read more

SLEPT IN FOR THE FIRST TIME!!! I woke up at 9:00 instead of 7:00 and it felt great!!! Went to the market in the morning. I bought some jewelry from JaWill and some fabric that has skulls, a Ghanian family, and the phrase "DEATH DESTROYS FAMILIES" all over it. It's pretty hilarious. Pretty much just ran errands and laid around all day. It was really nice to have a 'down' day. At night we used the internet and then went to Malaysias. After Malaysias, we went to a dance club that had a $1.00 cover which I thought was pretty hilarious. We danced like crazy and I probably had the most fun I've had so far. When Diana and I were dancing and requesting the song "Under Pressure" onstage, the DJ informed us that if we ... read more

Woke up and started the morning at Christ Orphanage. Because it was Good Friday we didn't have class and went to play in the field across the street. A lot of extra volunteers came to Christ which was nice, as their placements were not operating because of holiday. Taking them to a field was actually a bad idea. In the middle of the field was a Roman Catholic church where people were praying, and the kids frequently ran inside screaming and hollering because they liked the echo of their voices (the churches there don't have doors.) After Christ we ate lunch and went to the market where I bought gifts for my secret bunny, Diana (we did a gift exchange kind of like secret Santa.) When we left the market we suffered walking through the worst ... read more

Early morning as we woke up at 6:00 am to go hiking which was a 25 minute drive. The hike was about 45 minutes when we stopped by a rope swing and Michelle got a pretty great "Glamour Shots" picture of me. We continued on the hike to six caves which were extremely dangerous to climb. We visited one cave which had a window that our leader, Boss, said is "an act of God" int he fact that it cannot be seen outside. Another cave only had a small hole to enter and was covered in bats. After a small panic attack, I calmed down enough to be quiet when a bat hit me in the head. After we were throught with the caves we approached the summit of the mountain which was absolutely breathtaking. It's ... read more

Woke up and was off to Christ Orphanage. I skipped eating pineapple for the second day in a row, which is actually very exciting and unusual here. Pete and I are now expecting that I get the "scurves" or the "vurvies" (scurvy to everyone else) because it's now been two days since I have had this staple food group. When we went to Christ we took the youngest class to the river where they were all too afraid to go in the water. When they finally decided to hop in, they all stripped naked and started to pee in the shoreline. They all threw their clothes and flip flops into a big pile and I was really surprised to see nothing was lost in the end. Oh, Ghana :) As I held a little kid in ... read more

Woke up today sweating bullets. I worked with Minnesota Michelle on the grant today instead of going to the orphanage. Raymond has HUGE plans for this grant use, as he wants to incorporate a clinic, park, church, and vans into a new orphanage. To self sustain, he wants to run a carnival at the orphanage...I don't think he really knows what they are like in the U.S., or maybe they are really different here :) It rained like crazy all afternoon so we played cards at the house. For anyone who is curious, a normal day in Ghana is: 7:00 am: Wake up sweating; attempt to shower (often not possible because of low well pressure) 7:30 am: Breakfast; usually pineapple, tea, and plantains 8:30 am: Bus leaves for Christ; over 15 of us on a tro ... read more

Woke up and went to placement at Christ Orphanage. One word: overwhelming. There were over 100 kids at the orphanage, thirty of which live there and share two double bed matresses to sleep. After being treated like a celebrity and mauled for over 25 minutes, we sang. Hearing the kids sing is unbelievable and never gets old. They are so full of life and God's spirit. We even sang "Give God the Glory", which we sing with the "Arky Arky" song back home. When we first arrived, the children all screamed "YEVU! YEVU!" which means "white person" in Ewe. We then split up into small groups and tried to learn the alphabet which was awful. Everyone crying, no one listening. After leaving, we ate goat, rice, and plantain chips for lunch. In the afternoon we visited ... read more

HAPPY ST. PATRICK'S DAY! You'd never know it here. It was sunny all day and probably the hottest day so far. I woke up with such a bad stomach ache today that I considered staying home from placement. I ended up going so we sat around and colored with the youngest kids which they really enjoyed. It was very disheartening to hear Raymond say that no one from the local churches really donates money to the orphanage. During a fundraiser he once only received $2.00 from a church. I went with Rebecca to the market in the afternoon and bought fabric for a dress. A man grabbed my arm and wouldn't let go which was really scary. In the afternoon we visited a monkey sanctuary which was really cool to see. We fed them and they ... read more

Sorry, but this is so hard to stay updated with such slow computers...I really will try to get everything from this last week in. This weekend, we visited a hotel on Lake Volta which was absolutely insane. Imagine taking an extremely nice vacation to Mexico and paying only $50/night to stay there...and we had AIR CONDITIONING which was a wonderful wonderful treat as we do not have it at the home base. On Friday we just sat around the hotel and had a few cocktails under a cabana so it was nice to stay in after an extremely hot and bumpy two hour ride. We discovered there is a pet donkey at the hotel that they let walk around everywhere so that was really funny to see. We ate buffet at the hotel which was cold ... read more

Woke up and checked out of the Bulldog but was able to leave my luggage there. I walked to the dam to take a tram to the Museumplein where the US Embassy is located. I applied for my new passport and met a girl named Jennifer who lived in Hague and offered me a place to stay. When I was eating breakfast at a "Bagels and Beans", I met a man from Boston who was concerned I was having a breakdown. Apparently you must be a Dutch resident to receive a visa for Ghana at their embassy. He assured me everything would be alright and went home to get a jacket for me to wear. I then went to the Kinkos to use the internet where he followed me to give me his old phone cards. ... read more
