Well, I made here after two days of travel and 26 hours in a plane. Yes, I know how many hours I spend on a plane thanks to Kristen pointing it out. See, for that kind of thing I don't think it really helps to know that after two plane rides, 12 hours in the air and a sleepless night that you're less than half way there. But maybe that's just because I tend not to look on the bright side. Some people have hobbies or do crafts...I look on the dark side. But enough negativity, the trip here really wasn't that bad. I found a new appreciation for watching soccer on the way here. First of all, I watched a game in Heathrow airport where people from both countries whose teams were playing were watching ... read more

Wow, I can't believe I've already been here 2 weeks! I had a busy week this week. Started out by going with one of the Water/Sanitation local volunteers (meaning he's a Liberian) to one of the clubs on camp (yes they actually have night clubs in the refugee camp!). Its basically just a area of concrete near a wooden bar that serves some beers, but still, i can say i've been clubing in a refugee camp! Some guy next to me kept trying to give me tips on how i should dance, "ya nee ta move ya body, la thees..." pshht- like i don't know how to dance, I should be giving him tips! (Katie, Steph, stop laughing!) Next day however, my roomate got pretty sick. He came home from his HIV/AIDS outreach and just collapsed ... read more

Hey we're back... a little late but what can you say.. Day 7: Thursday: The Pastors preached, teached. This morning and the Ghanians soaked it up. Very receptive. There was about 35 of them. Pastors from all around Ghana. Whether still wasn't good enough to take the children to the beach. We played cards in the afternoon... some neighbor kids came over too. Day 8: Friday: We went to the School where the orphans are and we put on a chapel for the kids. It went so well. Tris was acting as a person looking for treasure. It was awesome. The children along with the teachers we amazed and loved what we did. Jacqueline preached. (Told the storey of Solomon asking for wisdom) She did so well. Adele did worship, she taught 2 songs with actions ... read more

Hi, friends! Thank you sooo much for your notes--I love hearing from you!! I am finally finding where the internet cafes are, so I will hopefully keep in better touch! Life in Ghana is going great....I am making some amazing friends and am getting used to the different way of life. People here are so generous and they work so hard. Despite the fact that they make little money, they are some of the happiest people you'd ever meet. Gosh, it's hard to describe this place, but I will hopefully post some pictures soon! I have met some fellow tourists from my practicum site who hope to travel with on the weekends. One of them is from Kenya and she thinks everything here is so expensive...however, for us Americans everything is soo cheap! (It used ... read more

I awoke this morning to the sound of a young girl scraming bloody murder. I peaked out through the bars and mosquito net in my window and saw a half naked young girl getting beating with a stick on the front porch of our neighbours. Our water guy (the person who gets the water from out well for our bucket showers), who was between me and our neighbours and thought i was looking at him, cheerfull waved and greeted me good morning, completly oblivious to the action going on behind him. Later, as when i left to go to work, i noticed that she was tied up in front of their house. a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/agoo/216916728/" title="Photo Sharing"img src="http://static.flickr.com/60/216916728_b5f60a6b25_b.jpg" width="1024" height="768" alt="Comfort" //a Today we were set to do sewage cleanup again, yum! Hi, friends! I have made it to Accra! I must write quickly as I am using someone's computer:) Anyways, just want to let you know that all is well and thus far, I am thoroughly enjoying my time in Ghana! On the plane here, I met someone from Dubuque, Iowa...is it a small world or what?! I am busy trying to learn the money system, how to barter at the market, how to most effectively communicate with those who mainly speak Twi (most of the people here are bilingual, but usually they speak Twi to each other and sometimes they do not understand my english...which makes for some funny conversations:) These past few days have been filled with amazing hospitality and many "Akwaaba, Oburuni"s (Welcome, white person!:) Even though Accra has many white people, I am ... read more

I have spent the last day and a half running around the southern half of Ghana trying to fit in as much sightseeing and adventure as humanly possible, and I think I succeeded. First went up to the Kakum National Park and man oh man this place rocked! I sort of overcame my nasty fear of heights and pretty much ran across the super high rope bridges that scour high above the tree lines. By high, I mean really insanely high. It was such an amazing time and the sights of the surrounding rain forest will stay with me for a long time. They park itself is host to a bountyful of various animals, but I didn't really spot any along the forest floor. Well, I think I spotting the butt of an elephant once, but ... read more

So the whole point of me going in to Accra was to catch up on some much needed relaxation time. I'm going in to visit my CAC friends Kayla and Maria and enjoy the luxury of A/C and running water and soft beds and all such stuff. I wasn't expecting to be so shocked walking into Kayla's house, but after just a week and a half in the camp western animities (yeah yeah i know my spelling is not even close!) seemed so unbelievable! It was amazing to be able to flush the toilet, to turn the taps and have water come out, to not be constantly drenched in sweat! It was probably a stupid thing though, I had just gotten used to the camp and I haven't been minding it or even noticing it so ... read more

Greetings, everyone! I hope you are doing great! Well, tomorrow is the big day—and I can honestly say I feel as ready as I could ever be. I have spent the last year reading all I could get my hands on, talking to everyone under the sun (both here and in Ghana), watching documentaries, etc etc….and now I am so excited the time is here! These last two weeks have been wild with preparations, but at the same time of the craziness, I have been overwhelmed by your support and kindness. Whether your encouragement has been through prayers, donations, well-wishes, phone calls, notes, etc., I greatly appreciate them all, and it is people like you who give me hope. You are the best! I have one bag of your donations ready to bring with me….and we ... read more

I had no idea I would be able to post this much...but the internet has been working and we're still at the hostel, with not much to do at this point. We were hoping to be on our way to Oda by this point but we're quickly learning that making plans are pointless bc someone will come up with something else for us to do. Tomorrow we're going to be on TV talking about what we're doing here...hoping to draw some attention to Oda and the problems there. We have NO CLUE what we're going to talk about or what it will be like (just like everythig else)...all we know is that Uncle Larry made arrangements for us to be on TV so we're gonna do it. We'll see. Yesterday a few of us went to ... read more
