I finally have time to write!! But I'm rather overwhelmed with everything I have to tell you about. It's getting increasingly difficult to convey with words what I'm feeling and experiencing here in Ghana to people on the other side of the world! I've been avoiding writing a blog 'cause I have no idea what to say that will do anything justice! The last time I wrote was almost 2 weeks ago and so much has happened since then! In short, I visited Cape Coast and the slavery castles/dungeons, enjoyed a few days in paradise on the beaches of Winneba and Cape Coast, hiked in Kakum National Park and "survived the canopy walkway," finished Poisonwood Bible (best book to read while actually in Africa), moved in with a new crazy rabbit raisin' homestay family in Accra ... read more

Halloween was last night and I miss it. This is worse than that time I dressed up like an old lady and went trick or treating by myself because I was too old and none of my friends would go with me. I cried when I got home... I guess I felt like I was losing something, but then halloween came back full force when people realized it was an excuse to dress up in sexy costumes and get wasted. Anyway - I spent it alone, reading Kite Runner (thanks Mom) and sleeping. I regret not writing for all this time but I had no choice. When I ame back to Accra I avoided the internet for as long as I could because I was dreading this feeling .... wanting to sum everything up, not being ... read more

I have been renamed Adwoa! (pronounced Adjua) In Ghana you are named by what day of the week you were born on, so my traditional name is Adjoa Kate. My drumming friend Kofi helped me figure out last night what day Nov. 5th 1984 landed on. I am on U of GHana's campus right now since we had the whole afternoon off and out of no where I just ran into Mike Tongs best friend Steve! He's enrolled in the University and has been here for a month and a half. He is one of 3 while kids I have seen in GHana besides our group. I said to my friend next to me, "oh look there's another white student over there," and then he yelled out "Kate!!" It's so wild to run into people ... read more

Mema mo adwo from Ghana!! (Good evening!) I'v e made it through my first two days in Africa and I am happier and more alive than ever! I apologize ahead of time for the use of TOO many superlatives, but there is really no way to describe with words where I am and what I am feeling and experiencing. Yes John and Leo, this trip has and will change my life! Eventhough I say that a lot, this one is going to take the gold. If you can imagine a wolrd where nothing and no one is the way it is at home in the States and every one is smiling, that is where I am. "Go and Enjoy Life" the Ghanaian people say all the time. Ariving in the Accra airport was unreal. Walking out ... read more

The experiences I have had thus far are probably not what would first come to mind when you talk about working in Africa. As a result, my view of Africa is one that doesn’t often get related back home. It’s one where people are trying to make a living in the same way we are in North America. People still want to live in the city and make money. They want to watch movies, and have a social life. Teenagers want to fall in love and live the fairytale love story just as much here in Africa as I did growing up. They go to school, earn their way to pay for their education if they can and try to get jobs when they graduate. They care about fashion and trends, being stylish shows a level ... read more

The last you heard from me in regards to the projects I was working on in Ghana was just an introduction to the NGO that I am working with and the projects that they are running. Since then I realize I have not really explained what it is exactly that I have been doing in Ghana. When I first introduced EnterpriseWorks (EW) the NGO that I am working with in Accra, Ghana, I mentioned a few projects; the plastic waste research and the wood stove project. These are the two projects that I have been working over the past 2 months, and I will take some time now to explain the plastic waste research project since it’s the one I dedicated most of my time and energy on. Plastic Waste Research The Problem Waste Management has ... read more

I was supposed to depart for Tamale today but the bus did not leave until 1:00 pm instead of 10:00 am. I did not want to arrive so late because I thought that It would be too late for the pick up that Anthony has arranged for me. He has arranged for his friend Paul to pick me up from the station when I arrive. I changed my ticket for tomorrow and Anthony told me to leave with bus no matter what time it departs. He said that It will be ok and that Paul will pick me up. I just rested for the rest of the day. It was a good rest so I’m not too worried about not traveling today. I watched Alfred Hitchcock’s Rear Window. After that I tried to call Anthony ... read more

Anthony and his wife Martha picked me up this morning at 9:00. I started the day out with a cup of coffee and a croissant topped with almonds. Nothing terribly exciting happened to day. I went to get a prescription for some malaria medication. Then I went to the immigration office. I need to extend my visa by 7 days because Ghana only validates Visa’s for 30 days. I never found out what the exact rules about extensions are. All I know is that I have to come back when the expiration of my visa is closer. Internet cafes have exploded since I was here in ’01. Back then you just paid the fee and went to the computer. Now you buy time and they give you a card with a password. You don’t have to ... read more
