3 weeks in Ghana...... So where to begin I do not know :) Bit of a crazy start arriving at 3.30am in the morning and then waiting an hour to be picked up, this is what to expect for the future, Ghanaian time :) The sites at 4.30 in the morning were crazy with people out running and setting up their stools for the day and generally being busy.... people should still be in bed at this time! I finally arrived at my host families home at 6.30am and was so tired that I couldn't actually sleep :( An induction happened at 10am and to be honest I just walked around in a daze not knowing what on earth was going on (some of you may be thinking.... what's new there) The first thing that really ... read more

Just got back from spending the weekend in Busua, which is by far the nicest bit of Ghana- could have spent several weeks there. The town itself is tiny but the beach is about 2 miles of sand and sea with several little surf bars at one end. The only catch is that it takes about 7 hours (at least) to get there. But we made it slightly more bearable by traveling the 2 hours to Accra on thursday and then leaving at 6am on friday to get to Busua at about 12:30. Due to the serious lack of guys at Kwamoso i was traveling with 4 girls (german Katja, dutch danny, french deaf Stephanie and Australian Zoe), and i can happily say that its easier traveling with guys. The journey back was somewhat hellish, ... read more

Been in Ghana a few weeks now so thought I ought to update this. So the project that we're doing is coming along pretty quickly as the walls are going up, but its still tiring making the mud bricks and the cement etc in aboput 35 degree heat. We do avoid the mid day heat though as we start at 8:30 and finish by 12:30 so its not too bad. My host family is really nice even though we dont see that much of the reverend, Ma is always around as is Quasi if we need anything and the food is good (if u like rice and chicken that is). Alot of stuff takes time to get used to but once youve had 30 kids shouting "abruni, abruni" (white boy) after u down a road u ... read more

Hey all, Just a quick little post to show you some pics of our recent day trip to the bead markets at Koforidua. I got tons of locally made beads and necklaces to share with you all when I get back! Also, we went to visit Boti waterfalls while we were in the area. It was tropical, magical...and beautiful! Though we weren't permitted, my roommate Jasmin, and friend Jessica, and I all took a hike to go see if we could stand (almost) underneath the main fall... a truly refreshing experience. Needless to say, we got drenched with the mist, but it was really awesome to be directly behind that huge wall of water...hopefully the pics do the place justice! And since I just realized that not all my pics are loading from my thumb drive, ... read more

We left our hotel at 5:30 am - our ride out of Accra was OK, not great but OK. There was a lot of traffic, but most slow moving and we even had bike lanes for part of the ride. Aside from some road construction and THOUSANDS of big ass bats flying overhead it would have been easy. I actually thought these were big birds until Barry pointed out that they were in fact BATS. They were swooping and making all sorts of creepy noises... YIKES! I was a bit freaked... So once we got out of the city and onto a secondary highway, the traffic died down, and things started to look up... WAYYYY up! In once sense, the villages we were riding through, the people were amazingly friendly (Which we had hoped), and the ... read more

Riding Day 1 - 96km (total 104km) Wednesday was quite a day on a couple of fronts. For starters, it was nice to get out of Accra. Oxford Street in the Osu District of Accra (where we were staying) was starting to wear on us. It had all the creature comforts we could want, but without the Ghanaian friendliness and spirit we had heard so much about. As well, after being in bed for a day (I was feeling better, or I thought I did), I was itching to do something else over than watch the US election on TV. It was quite a powerful experience being in Africa during Obama's victory. When we woke up at 4:00, they had just announced that Obama had won. Africa was watching this election about as closely as anyone. ... read more

Hello Again! It's Monday morning. Again. I'm always off to a slow start on Mondays. I slept in, poked around my room, picked up some reading for class, and made my way to the computers. Then it's off to Joshua's (as usual) and class in the evening. That's it for today. This weekend was nice. I traveled to Akosombo (Eastern region, two or three hours by trotro) with Eric, Sammy, and Rachel. We left midday Friday, took a trotro to Tema and another trotro from Tema to Akosombo, found a hotel in Atimpoku (near Akosombo), went for a walk across a pretty little suspension bridge, took pictures, had dinner, and hung out in the hotel talking for a few hours. Saturday we got up around 8am, crossed the street to the trotro station and bought a ... read more

This past weekend I went to an orphanage in Koforidua. We are going there again next weekend to help with a program where they are honoring all the donors that contributed to the orphanage. The whole group did not go this past weekend, just a few of us. I left on Saturday morning around 8:30 or so and did not get to the orphanage until around 1, but that is to be expected. We took a tro to Madina and then from there we took one to Koforidua. Once we arrived at the orphanage we began painting one of the buildings. There were more of us than the work we had to do because we were also supposed to be helping put up a roof but the man that was supposed to show us fell ill. ... read more

7/27/08 I’ll start off this entry with a description of my American meal in Koforidua last week. I decided that if I was going to have some American style food that I better go all the way. I ordered a beef burger with cheese, a side of potato chips (french fries in American English), and an ice cold Coca-Cola. To polish off the day I grabbed a fan ice in the tro back to Old Tafo for dessert. The fries cost just as much as the cheeseburger, but it was worth ever pesewa. I spent half of my weekly allowance on that one meal, and I’ll definitely do it again before I head to my site. If I were in America I’d say that the cheeseburger was decent at best, but considering my current situation I ... read more
