3/8/09 This was another irregular week as far as school goes. Monday was the last day of the mid-term break, and classes were supposed to be back to normal on Tuesday. I am not scheduled to teach any classes on Tuesdays, but I planned on teaching one of the classes during a free period they had so they wouldn’t fall behind the other class. Most of the students decided to extend their mid-term break and didn’t come to school on Tuesday. When I went to go teach, I found that there were only a handful of students present so I chose not to teach. On Wednesday and Thursday I would say that about 25% of the form 1 students came to school. The classes were so small that I combined all 4 form 1 classes to ... read more

3/1/09 Whether you can believe it or not, it’s already March and yet another month has passed. This week has not been a typical week as far as school goes. The mid-term break started on Thursday, which means that mid-term exams had to be given this week. The mid-term break and testing has been posted on the schedule of the term so I knew that it was supposed to happen this week. I was hoping to get one period of teaching in this week before giving the mid-term exam to my classes, but plans rarely go the way you hope in Ghana. On Monday on my way to teach my first class, I was surprised to see most of the students out of their classrooms. I was then informed by fellow teachers that they were holding ... read more

Well, today means my trip is halfway over. My cell phone is dead, so everyone will have to contact me on this website. I am now in Kumasi, home of the Ashanti. Today, I visited the market, the cultural museum and the sword in the ground. There is a sword, stuck in the ground from the 16th century. It came from heaven from the Ashanti God. No one can pull it out. It's stuck. Legend has it that if anyone succeeds, that the Ashanti chief and people will lose their power and their kingdom. Marida, I thought I saw Byron for the third time. He was in Accra, then Cape Coast and now Kumasi. Are you sure he is in the US? On the bus to Kumasi, I sat behind a bus driver who has that ... read more

2/22/09 In contrast to last week’s entry, this week’s blog post will be much shorter. As far as school goes, I had a full week of classes without any interruptions. Looking at how many weeks there are left in the term and how much material I still have to cover, there is no way that I am going to get through the entire syllabus. Maybe if I had the form 1s for the entire first term I might have been able to get through the syllabus, but that’s not the case. I assigned a short homework assignment and now that there are 220 form 1 students, it took me four and a half hours to grade the homework assignment. I am not a fan of lesson planning, but I have to say that grading is definitely ... read more

2/10/09 Hey peoples, how’s it going? I just realized as I typed the date that I have been in Ghana for 8 months today. It seems like just yesterday I was stepping off the plane for the first time in Ghana. It also seems like I’ve been here forever at times though. Now that I’m back in the full swing of school, it seems like the weeks are just flying by. I’m finding that I either have absolutely nothing to do or I am extremely busy. There doesn’t seem to be a medium ground for teachers in the Peace Corps. This last week was much better than the previous one and I was even more busy than usual. Last week I scheduled to be one of the masters on duty. It is the master on duty’s ... read more

Ah we've been enjoying our time together. Kwabena loves baking and Praise loves his bike! This next week the students will be “spacing out”. We have a team of (2) teachers to help launch us into space! Last month, under some very comical circumstances, I met Jessica (Utah) and Matild (France) here in Dunkwa. Both are volunteers in Ghana for 3 months, love kids and the sciences. They spent a few days in Apebouso teaching and being taught (culture). Despite Apebousos very hungry cocoa bugs, the girls enjoyed the visit and have asked to come back this week. We have some fun ideas we hope will help students begin to grasp the mind stretching concept of space. It is possible for this to be the final week in processing the schools official registration. Yep, one day ... read more

This weekend we took our last ISEP organized trip to Kumasi. It is supposed to be about a 4 hour drive but traffic is another issue. I don’t remember how long it took us to get there, but I do remember we didn’t get lunch until 4. All things considered it wasn’t an extremely eventful weekend. Kumasi is the second largest city in Ghana and is the capital for the Ashanti tribe. The Ashantis are known for their arts and crafts so the weekend revolved mostly around shopping and learning how the stuff is made. When we first got there we went to where the current chief lives. His house is like the White House or something. It was completely surrounded by security and there is a very strict no picture policy. We weren’t allowed near ... read more

I have just finished my last full week at school and will be returning to Accra next week for my last few days in Ghana. The past two weeks have gone by quite quickly as I have been finishing up school work before I leave. At this point, all letters have been written, the library is being used daily, and the newspaper has been printed. All finished! This past weekend I went to the lake for one last getaway before the end of the internship. A whole group of us went. Some of Alison’s friends from America were here to visit her, so all of us headed off to Lake Bosumtwi for a fun relaxing weekend. Some highlights would include the late night dips, eating good food, and squishing 8 people into a 5 person taxi ... read more

2/1/09 Hey everybody, how’s it going? I’m doing alright, but this last week was not good at all as far as my school is concerned. The first bit of bad news came on Monday. Last weekend a boy in form 2 died. My first question was how did it happen? On a number of occasions I have asked Ghanaians how a person died and I always get the same response. “He or she got sick and died a couple days later.” Apparently the boy got sick and was admitted to a hospital in Kumasi, but he didn’t make it out. Since I taught form 2 math for half of last term, I had the boy in class. I didn’t know the boy by name, but I knew his face. I eventually heard that the boy might ... read more

1/25/09 Hey everybody. It has been over a month since my last blog entry and I’m really sorry I’ve been slacking lately. The last month was pretty hectic, but I’m back in the swing of things at site so I’ll be getting back to my routine of trying to write something every week. As most of you know, I came back to America for Christmas. My trip didn’t start off too well thanks to flight delays, missed connections, and snow in Seattle. I was extremely lucky to get a flight out of New York and even luckier when my flight was diverted to Salt Lake City where my wonderful girlfriend picked me up so I could get some sleep, food and take a shower. All in all I think I arrived in Seattle only 14 hours ... read more
