4/26/09 Hey everybody. I know some of you have been busy with family birthdays, but I’ve been taking it easy and don’t have too much to write about. This past week, the school served as a testing site for the BECE (Basic Education Certificate Examination). The BECE is the standardized test that form 3 JHS students take to determine which school they will be placed at for SHS. The BECE for JHS is like the WASSCE for SHS in that it is created and marked by WAEC (West African Examinations Council). I hope you understood all those acronyms. Anyway, many of the teachers from my school were chosen to be invigilators for the BECE. As a Peace Corps volunteer, I am not allowed to be an invigilator for any WAEC exams. Although, I did take the ... read more

4/16/09 Hey everybody. Even though school has been out, I’ve still been pretty busy over the last week and a half. I spent a lot of time marking my end of term exams last week, and I am proud to say that I’ve finally finished marking all the questions. Then I spent a number of hours adding up the scores for each student and recording them into my computer. It is amazing how long it takes to simply record the grades of an exam when there are 235 students. Now that I have all the scores in my computer; all I have to do is calculate the final grades for the term and write them in the terminal report for the school. I think I mentioned this a long time ago, but I’ll mention it again ... read more

Last Tuesday I met with Reid who knows Jessica, who is my sister Tanya’s sister-in-law… so basically a friend of a friend of my sister? Anyways, he was in Ghana for a week and a half checking up on a project he had worked on for a few years up north in Kumasi and he comes back to Ghana about twice a year to make sure the project is still on track. He was kind enough to offer to bring some stuff for me and Tanya sent him with some poptarts and Little Debbie’s and school supplies for the kids. I was really surprised when I got the call from him because I haven’t heard a southern accent in 3 months. It was an adventure trying to find his guesthouse because there wasn’t a sign, but ... read more

4/7/09 Hello, and a happy April morning to all my avid readers. It is April once again and you all know that means lots of family birthdays, and therefore lots of family dinners. I am truly sorry that I cannot be there to enjoy them all with you, but make sure to have a Jack and Coke for me to help drown out the noise just a little. I have a few things to write about so let’s get to it. Last week the form 1s and 2s finished taking their end of term exams on Thursday. I wasn’t scheduled to invigilate any exams so I took the opportunity to mark my own exam. I spent a lot of time marking the theory questions on my exam last week to say the least. Although it has ... read more

This week Kirk and I are in the capitol city of Accra. We received a phone call last week from the US Embassy asking us to come ASAP. Several weeks ago we applied for a visa for Praise to accompany us to the US this summer. At that time he was temporarily denied. For fear of “child trafficking” they wanted to do an investigation on Kirk and I as well as verify the authenticity of the paper work we submitted. Tuesday of this week, Praise was granted his visa! We have been struggling for months to process travel papers for Kwabena (our 17yr old boy). We were told by the embassy, “there is only a slight chance Kwabena will be granted a visa.” Hey “slight” works for me. It says “continue to hope” and that is ... read more

Hey All!! Twice in one week?! Yeah, I'm in a generous mood...and I'm kinda backlogged! So I thought I would play catch-up before taking off on another far-flung adventure. So, this past weekend marked my second extended visit to Kumasi, and while the quantity of the itinerary was relatively small it was more than made up for in the high levels of quality! What was the mission this time? Cheer on Ghana's national football team the Black Stars, as they took on Benin in a 2010 World Cup Qualifier Match! While this was once again an independent trip, there were so many ISEP people going it might as well have been an ISEP sponsored trip! There were about twenty four or twenty five of us that left, all on different days and different times. My party ... read more

3/30/09 End of term exams continued this week. This is the third week of exams and there is still another week to go. Personally, I don’t think the exam schedule is very time efficient at all. Last week both the form 3 classes and the form 2 classes took an exam each day. This week on the other hand, the form 1 classes and the form 2 classes alternated who took an exam each day. Part of the problem is that there are so many students in form 1 that they take up most of the classrooms to take an exam because the desks need to be spread out somewhat and there can only be one student per desk unlike during class. My core mathematics exam was on Wednesday. There were 5 other teachers helping me ... read more

3/15/09 This week has been abnormal to say the least, but I am finding that weeks like this occur quite frequently so I am accustomed to expect the unexpected. As you all know, last Friday was Ghana’s Independence Day, and as a result the following Monday was a national holiday and there was no school. In the past 2 weeks, the school has officially had 4 days off, but in reality, many students took even more days off. On Tuesday there was inter-school girls’ volleyball. Since I am not scheduled to teach on Tuesdays I took the opportunity to go watch the competition. Last year the event was held at ABSEC, but this year it was held at Christ the King Catholic SHS in Obuasi. Last year our girls took second at the event and advanced ... read more

At 7am on Saturday, our CIEE leaders arrived at the apartment with a small bus to drive us the five hours to Kumasi. Kumasi is the second-largest city in Ghana (behind Accra) and is the heart of the Ashanti region, which used to be an empire that encompassed a large portion of West Africa hundreds of years ago. Ashantis now mostly reside in southern Ghana -- most of my Ghanaian friends and CIEE leaders are Ashanti -- and still have a lot of pride in their history. The Ashanti king, or "Asantehene" in Twi, is still very powerful. As Mr. Gyasi, our fearless leader, explained, "If he tells Ashantis to go to bed at six pm every night, they will do it." A command from King Osei Tutu II, the current Asantehene, trumps one from President ... read more

It shouldn’t be so difficult to take “our family” on a trip. As I type Kirk and I are emotionally in “Neutral”. Praise had his American Visa interview at 7:30 this morning. To not bore you with all of the questions, details and reasons I will simply repeat what the officer said. “He is temporarily denied. This is a special case as you have no legal custody of him outside of Ghana. I will keep all of this paper work and we will call you with a final decision.” Exactly when they will call he did not say - one day - one week - one month ??? Due to the increase in “World Wide Child Trafficking” this decision could easily go either way. The American Embassy is not trying to be difficult rather they are ... read more
