Friday July 14, 2006 - Got up late today and packed up and checked out. I still am carrying around three bags - my backpack, my daypack, and the bag I bought to carry snacks in for the airport stint but now has some souveneirs. Put this all in storage and then went out for a bit. Came back and met Roger for lunch. He had a new friend - Declan, from N. Ireland. The three of us got some lunch at Felfela and then decided to see some more of Cairo. Got a taxi to take us to Khan al Kahlili, the big market place near Islamic Cairo. Here felt like real Egypt -all the random shops and markets you'd expect down winding alleyways. Here we ran into the Canadians. After walking around here for ... read more

We said fairwell to our Nile boat today and had an early morning off to the Valley of the Kings. We were up early enough to get a piccie of sunrise, so it was quite early and I was not full awake until we got to the place where we met our mode of transportation to the Valley of the Kings - donkeys. Now, I've had a little experience with horses before, but donkeys are in a whole league of their own. There are no such things as stirrups, the reigns were a thin piece of rope that apparently was more for decoration than anything else and 'Ooush' was supposed to mean stop but really had no affect and you ended up saying 'Oooush-sh!t' instead when the donkeys decided to go for a little run. Our ... read more

This morning James was a tad under the weather. But it wasn't just due to the antics from the night before, it seems that the chicken from the previous day had caught up with him and he had a touch of the gastro. We both managed to get up that morning and do a tad of shopping in town, but by the afternoon, he stayed on the boat and in bed while I headed into town to visit the temples of Karnak. We made our way by horse-driven carriages to the colossal group of temples built by a heap of different pharaohs at different times throughout the ages. It had over 130 columns in it's hypostyle hall - the most in the world - but i'm afraid I can't tell you too much more. It was ... read more

This morning we were up early again for a quick stop at the temple of Edfu dedicated to the falcon-headed god Horus. Okay, quick bit of mythology for ya - there were originally 4 Gods that were created - two guys and 2 chicks. Each were betrothed to the other, and Seth wasn't too impressed when he got stuck with the ugly sister of sadness who cried all the time, and wanted the beautiful Isis who was the goddess of beauty and music. He was supposed to be the King, but as he was such a grumpy and jealous dude, the people kicked him out and put Osiris, the fat happy brother, in his place. Now Osiris was married to the lovely Isis, so Seth was a bit ticked and decided to kill his brother - ... read more

245am is really a time for sleeping I've decided. Unfortunately this was not to be today, but we were headed for Abu Simbel which was about the only place I was willing to get up for at that time of morning. We were up and packed and on the bus by 330am and were given our little breakfast boxes to eat later on the bus. We then made our way to the area where our convoy of buses met to all make our way to Abu Simbel which is a 3 hour bus trip there, and then 3 hours back to Aswan. So, we dozed for a while on the bus until we pulled up at Abu Simbel just after 7am. It had to be about 35 degrees already and we sat down in front of ... read more

James back again... Well, after the delicious roast chicken with spaghetti bolognaise etc. (That's what you call fusion cooking...?!), we left for the train ride to Aswan. Before we even got out of the street our hotel was on, our bus was blocked in by a car that had been left in the middle of the road, contents: a couple of unsupervised kids. Our bus driver, not wanting to make us late for the train, decided to get in the car and relocate it for the owner, with the kids still sutting in the back seat...., just as the driver returned from their "quick stop in". At the time our fearless leader Ahmed had been giving our briefing for the day/night ahead. Not one for time wasting he did what any self respecting tour leader does ... read more

Matt: I guess tucked away in the back of everyone’s head is a list of places that you must visit before you die. Some lists maybe short, others simple; alas mine is neither. Although over the past nine months I have been able to cross a heap of places off my inflated and hugely expensive list, number one - Egypt - still seemed a bit unreachable (I guess the whole Africa thing makes it seem further away than it actually is). And so when Ed suggested that we take a week off for my birthday for a cruise down the Nile, I jumped at the chance. To add to the ‘wowness’, my brother had surprised me by arriving from Sydney the day before to join us for our trip (he and Ed had arranged it in ... read more

Our group woke up late for a change before heading to the ACE Egypt animal care facility. This is a place where poor Egyptians can take there animals such as donkeys and horses for free medical care and washing. There is a lack of knowledge among the poor Egyptians about how to treat their animals. Many of the animals are under fed and are worked to they fall down and hurt themeselves. Also their is a belief among the poor Egyptians that if the animal is hurt in a certain spot then if you burn the area around it the animal will get better. Well this only leads to greater infections or death. In fact if the animal is so bad that they require ACE to put them down first ACE must buy the animal from ... read more

Last night I enjoyed going along the Cornich in Luxor and taking one of the horse carriage around. I was able to see the Luxor Museum which is better organized and displayed then the main museum in Cairo. Also looked over the Temple of Luxor at Sunset. Our group started the day early to beat the heat and crowds to the Valley of the Kings. There is no pictures allowed in the tombs and there is not much to look at above ground. Our guide took us to three tombs in the Valley which contains 63 tombs. We visited Ramses IX, Ramses IV, and Ramses III. You enter most of the tombs via large strait corridors although some you have to take stair to get down to. The first tomb we saw was incredibly carved and ... read more
