Memphis, Saqqara & Aswan Egypt For my last afternoon in Cairo I decided to squeeze in a visit to the ancient sites of Memphis and Saqqara located about 30 miles south of the city. Memphis was one of the great cities of the ancient world but has now all but disappeared from centuries of pillaging and floods. It’s a fairly unimpressive site with only a few significant monuments and statues of Ramses II. Nearby at Saqqara is the Step pyramid built for Zoser. The step pyramid is significant because it is Egypt’s (and the worlds) first stone monument. At most of these sites, the tourism cashiers like to double dip...they charge you to enter the grounds which you assume is the full admission, then once you park and walk up to the actual site, they charge ... read more

My four day three night cruise ended a couple of days ago. I was picked up by the travel agent representative, and we were taken sightseeing immediately. When I initially signed up for this cruise I didn't realy know what to expect, and I didn't realize that the entire time we would be on a fully guided tour. I usually avoid fully guided tours, and it's my first that lasts several days. My guide was very knowledgeable, but he did speak a little too much, too quickly. I don't think he knows how much information he tells me and how little I can absorb at one time. In fact, I had to review what he said each evening by reading my guidebook. We started our trip by staying yet another day in Aswan. Once I saw ... read more

First things first, the whole 55 mile statistic is more or less a vague estimate based on using my thumb and the scale in the Lonely planet book. I had noticed lately that my blog titles were rather unimpressive and thus attempted something a tad more poetic. My time in the desert came to an exciting close when my cab from the bus station ran out of gas en route to downtown Cairo from the "bus station" and I had to push it across several lanes in what felt like the fires of hell while endless wafts of exhaust subsequently destroyed my lungs. I had no sympathy for the cab driver whatsoever after learning that gas here costs about 1.3 Egyptian pounds per liter. That works out to roughly 33 cents USD. After that little debacle ... read more

I got the title for this blog entry from Lawrence of Arabia. And yes, it's hot, hotter, hottest here. Today, according to the hotel thermometer by the pool is was 48 degrees Celcius. That's 118 degrees Fahrenheit. But it's an incredibly dry heat, it's so unlike any weather I have every experienced before. It's as if I were standing in front of a fire, well two fires, one behind and one in front. And when the wind blows, it blows hot air, not a cooling breeze. The hotel is of course air conditioned, and there is a pool, both of which I've taken advantage of. I don't know if there is a trick to staying cool here. I drink water as often as I breath. I wear long trousers, wear a hat with side flaps and ... read more

Well we thought Luxor was bad but the further south you go in Egypt the hotter it gets! Yesterday was a barmy 50 degrees which is rather warm and apparently they can get up to 55- 56 deg on a truly hot day. Fair enough though as it is the middle of the Egyptian summer and we are only a couple of kms from the Sahara Desert! Anyway on Thursday morning we had a very early start (3am!) in order to travel south through the desert in convoy to Abu Simbel. Yes thats right a convoy with full military escort! We were happy to be baby-sat though, as Abu Simbel is only 40 km north of the Sudanese border (say no to civil war, ethnic cleansing and kids with AK-47s). It was a bit over 3 ... read more

After visiting the Valley of the Kings we boarded our Nile Cruise Boat for the eagerly awaited 3 day cruise up the Nile from Luxor to Aswan. Our boat was actually a 4 star vessel called the Rosetta. It carried 90 passengers and according to the information sheet it had been renovated "at least once" (so twice??) since its maiden voyage in 1989. Nevertheless she was a beauty and with a pool deck complete with sun longers and a swimming pool we couldn't have been happier. Beside our group of 10, the rest of the passengers on the boat were Polish and some interesting cultural differences quickly became apparent. First of all, like most European men, Polish men shun boardshorts for tight Speedo togs, while those without their togs wear their undies. Gross gross gross. One ... read more

Arrived in Aswan after an interesting trip on the train. Apparently it was first class but the seats weren't even bolted down properly. Anyway, we arrived at the hotel and after about 4 hrs of sleep, we were up at 3.00am to board the bus to Abu Simbel. All the buses leave at the same time and escorted by police. Our tour leader said it was for organisational reasons but our tour guide said it was because terrorists operate in southern Egypt. The bus did the 300km trip in about 2hrs 40mins. Lets just say they were going quite fast and it made us reach for our seatbelts! Anyway, we made it there and back safely. Abu Simbel is two massive temples which the Egyptians moved 55 metres up and 210m back before they flooded the ... read more

Firstly, we've uploaded Cairo piccies so you can go back and have a look. We took the overnight train to Luxor (approx 9 hrs in a Business Class style seat - service far from Bus Class though!). Our tour guide said that Luxor traffic is very structured and not crazy like Cairo. Well, it may be better but we've still seen one accident and many crazy drivers ignoring traffic lights. We went to Luxor Temple which was totally amazing. It was only a short walk from our hotel - Tutotel - via the banks of the Nile and about a thousand touts saying G'day mate and offering us Felluca rides. The temple is in really good condition. In the afternoon, took a horse and carriage ride to the Karnak Temple which was built for the sun ... read more

So having spent Saturday at the Pyramids we then set off on our trip south from Cairo. As far as I was concerned the real tour started here! We left on the overnight train to Luxor which despite being a 10 hour longhaul was great fun. We had smuggled a bit of booze on board (felt a bit like sneaking it into the cricket) so we were quite merry and very noisy. Nevertheless we had comfortable airline style seats (which you could turn around to face the row behind you) and everyone managed to get at least a couple of hours sleep by the time we arrived in Luxor at 8am. Luxor is an interesting kind of place with heaps and heaps of the famous Egyptian temples and tombs etc to head to and see. Back ... read more

Thursday July 20, 2006 - Got up this morning and sailed to Kom Ombo, a whopping 30 minutes away. Got off where we had a taxi arranged to take us to the temple. We walked around and met up with a girl from the Check Republic who had been on the boat with all the obnoxious Australians from two nights back. She said there was room on their minibus to Luxor and maybe the tour guide would allow us to ride with them. That eased my mind a bit as I was getting worried we would never find a way to Luxor. All the other tourists did it in a convoy. So after we walked the temple we asked the guide and he asked the group and they agreed, so we got a free ride to ... read more
