Ready for another day of information overload, Gene and I headed down to meet our guide in front of the hotel. Our driver was amazingly on the ball that morning, waiting for us at the side of the van with hair combed and what looked to be a decent night’s rest. It was my guess that he wasn’t willing to spend yet another day playing chauffeur only to go home with empty pockets. Our first stop was at Karnak Temple, a ruin measuring approximately 1.5km by 800m. The Temple was “built, added to, dismantled, restored, enlarged and decorated over nearly 1500 years. was the most important place of worship in Egypt during the height of Theban power and was called Ipet-Isut, meaning ‘The Most Perfect of Places.’” Gene and I learned more that day than we ... read more

We stood in the lobby for fifteen minutes watching several people enter holding placards tattooed with the names of likeminded tourists taking guided tours around Luxor before I leaned in and told Gina, “We’re getting stiffed.” Having given Abdul a deposit for half the cost of our two day-long trips while disoriented and bleary-eyed the previous morning, I wasn’t completely convinced that I hadn’t been scammed. Seconds before declaring the situation a conspiracy, a portly fellow, clad in a Hawaiian shirt and slacks, walked up to us and introduced himself as Bob. Gina and I returned the salutation with smiles. Used to the chuckle that typically ensues after revealing our names, we turned the question back on the man of clear Egyptian stock, “What is your real name?” “Baswhan. But, most people can’t pronounce my ... read more

Awaking to the sound of a good pounding on our door at 5:00 a.m. was not exactly my cup of tea. We had just enough time to throw on clothes and gobble down our pound cake and croissant breakfasts before arriving at the Luxor train station. The last thing we were in the mood for was another haggle fest at such an early hour. Gene, knowing his feisty wife all too well, warned me before we even stepped foot out the door that he was in no mood to fight over a few bucks and wanted more than anything just to get to our hotel. Nonetheless, I still managed to Jew down the taxi driver another 5 Egyptian pounds, saving us a whole $0.50 just out of principle. We were certain we got swindled once again ... read more

Every second guy stops to say hello, welcome me, tell me how wonderful Australia is, or I am, or give me a piece of helpful advice. I'm sure it has nothing to do with the fact that they are trying to sell me a hotel room/horse ride/felucca trip/dodgy souvenir/taxi journey/bottle of water/drugs/random tourist keepsake or service. They are just plain nice fellows. Luxor is known as the 'Hassle Capital of Egypt'. So pervasive is this reputation, that many shops... read more

Untitled Today was the longest day EVER!!!!! We had to get up at 4:30am so we could leave at 5am for our hot air balloon ride over the West Bank. We took a boat across the Nile and then a bus to the launching area. The process was so much better than in Australia because the balloon was already inflated when we got there and we didn't have to help put it away at the end. We didn't get to be up in the air for sunrise, but it was a very hazy morning so it wouldn't have been that spectacular anyway. We got to see the Vally of the Kings, Hatshepsut's Temple, Deir el-Medina, and the Valley of the Queens in addition to some Temples from the air. We also flew over some houses and ... read more

So I have just about managed to get my land legs back after the 2 days floating up the Nile. Basically all it consisted of was lying on a giant mattress in the sun while every now and again getting up to eat some of the wonderfully prepared food. I spent it polishing off 2 books and listening to alot of music. Fully recommended! Ironically the only excitement was 30 seconds after I had thought to myself "Wow, I haven't been this relaxed since the Cruise last year", then the captain of the other felucca decided to tack towards us for some strange reason. We lay there and thought, "He'll realise he's coming straight towards us (and more importantly, me) and will move". Nope. I rolled out of the way and he clipped the back ... read more

Untitled This morning we had to get up at 6am so that we could leave at 7am to go to the Temple at Edfu. We had some time to look around the temple and then we headed back to the boat. We got back around 8:30am and the boat set sail for Luxor. We ate breakfast and then most of us took naps. After my nap, I went up on deck and talked to some people (Latrise, Leah, Kate, Julia, and Holly) until lunch. We dipped our toes in the pool, but it was too cold to go in. While eating lunch, the boat passed through the locks at Esna. After lunch, I went back up on deck and talked to Marlene and Bea. Amy came up and joined us. Then, the two of us decided ... read more

Hidey ho!! For the last few days we've been slumming it... sailing up the nile in a 5star cruiseship. Yeah, it's tough for some. It was supposed to be a 3star but we got upgraded. I'm guessing that's not actually all that uncommon though, as there are over 250 cruise boats floating up and down the nile, and i guess a lot of them would be empty now we're outside of peak season. There's still a boatload(HA!) of them floating around though. The Nile is just spectacular to sail along, amazing scenery. In a way it's exactly like you'd picture it from a movie... a big wide river, mostly still clean, lush, fertile greenery and crops along the banks with farmers tending the fields and kids riding donkeys, but contrasted with bleak sandy deserts in the ... read more

Well, what a luxury a proper bed and a shower is! We pulled into Luxor and the first thing that most people did was get straight into the shower. Myself, I jumped straight in the pool and it felt fantastic! After I did eventually shower, we were treated to some fine local cuisine before most people turned in after the exhausting desert trip. The next day was our sightseeing trip in Luxor, and after what i've seen in Cairo, I can't understand why Cairo is more popular than here. Luxor is everything that Cairo is not. It is clean, no smog, smaller, less traffic and to be honest, probably better sights as well. All while being set right on the river Nile with a great riverfront area, which makes it a popular destination for cruise ... read more

There are a few sights around Luxor - Luxor Temple and Karnak Temple on the East bank, Tombs of the Kings, Queens, Nobles, and Hashephut Temple on the West bank, and Abydos where Osiris' head was buried after Seth killed him... Didn't do Abydos, which need a full day trip.. So.. my overnight train from Cairo was supposed to arrive at 7am in Luxor.. but it arrived only at 10am... so, went in search of a good place to stay.. the Nefertari had some pretty good comments in LP, walked there.. but was told room rate is fixed at 50LE.. wah.. so decided to try out the Princess Hotel (not in LP) recommended by another traveller.. When I arrived there.. i told him somebody recommended me.. and said i can get a room for 15LE ... read more
