Cairo: Jan. 2 - 11 After spending almost three weeks in the Sinai we succumbed to the fact that we would eventually have to leave. Despite the many warnings from locals, divers and tourists alike, we headed to one of the world's largest cities, Cairo. As soon as we got off the bus in Cairo it was clear we were no longer in the peaceful haven of the Sinai. In a high paced city with a population of 20 million, the honking, yelling and arguing was almost immediate. Luckily, Dan's friend Mohamed, from Toronto was working in Cairo and was able to pick us up from the bus station. He was a wonderful host for our entire stay, and truly saved us from the real Cairo experience. Mohamed was kind enough to find us a beautiful ... read more

Early on 21 October the ship rose early, took on board the pilot and extra crew, and took its place in the southbound convoy for the Suez canal. It took us the whole day to transit and with this and the northbound convoy we must have seen 40 big ships using the amazingly narrow strip of water. Strange to see completely barren flat desert on the Sinai side and relatively lush oasis on the Nile side. Through the canal the boats are separated by 5 minutes but at the Bitter Lakes the southbound let the northbound convoy pass and we got to see them all. Some massive container ships. We passed under the centre of the Peace Bridge with 1.5m to spare above our main mast. The Star Clipper led the convoy out of the southern ... read more

We know that many of you thought it would never last, but Kyle and I made it to our 10 year wedding anniversary (despite the multitude of border crossings!). When we got married and made the decision to forego a honeymoon (we used the money for a house), we joked about going somewhere "really cool" on our 10 year anniversary. Ten years seemed like such a long way in the future, but it looks like we got to do something extraordinary for this anniversary! We woke up in the Sea of Aqaba on July 31st and the three of us soaked in the pool where we looked across to Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Israel. A nice view and a nice way to start the day. Even at 8 am the sun was bright and hot, but ... read more

Live aboard, Sharm el Sheik 10 to 16 May 2009 Now welcome aboard the Snapdragon, my home for the next week. It is a 30 metre long vessel with 4 decks, 6 crew and can hold 20 guests. My week it had 5 including me. So lots of space. At the end I had done another 19 dives, 4 dives a day, bringing my total for the 17 days up to 32 dives. Doubling my amount of dives I had done in the previous 8 years. Man was I stuffed. The dives included; drift dives, cave dives, night dives, boat dives and wreck dives. The highlight of the diving was the SS Thistlegorm. The SS Thistlegorm was a supply ship of the British Navy, heading to Tobruk, to assist the 8th Army and the Australian army ... read more

Not sure it is a good date to be doing our final exam for our Open Water certification, but nowt we can do about it now. To get off to a good start we opted to breakfast at Camel, a feast for the condemed men sort of thing. The plan for the day was part of the final exam, then head to the sea to do the final 2 course dives, and the optional get to know dive. Oh my god I hate exams, and this one has 50 questions and you can only get 12 wrong "no pressure then" Our dive boat for the day was the "Wasser". The course dives were tiring and exhausting, but at least we know we are equiped to cope with some things that can go wrong in the water ... read more

The day has finally dawned, now we can relax, lie in the sun and basically just kick back. But first things first, do we eat breakfast in the hotel or do we go hungry. The thought of all those steps to the town centre won the day and we took our seats in the hotel "dining room". Our day was spent lounging around on the sun loungers on what the hotel laughingly calls a beach. I think the sand is the left overs from the building site next door and the flat area is about 3 feet above the water, with a wooden jetty and a metal tube step to get you into the sea. The sea and coral however more than makes up for all the downsides. Lots of fish, coral and sea anemones, and ... read more

Tuesday 10th or D DAY After an uninspiring breakfast we wandered down to the Camel Dive Center to start our course. Met our instructor Sven, and filled out the necessary medical forms. Due to Mike being +45 years old and a smoker, he had to have a medical. €35 later and a medical consent form, Mike is permitted to dive. Not sure about these Egyptian doctors, he has told Mike if he likes smoking he should carry on doing so, but he must take exercise. I wonder which part of the advice he will take heed of. There is one other English guy on the course with us, only 3 in the class, should make it easier. Sven seems to have loads of patience with us, even when it takes me an age to understand some ... read more

This was a place I had to visit again. As mentioned in an earlier entry, I spent a week here in 2007 diving in the Red Sea, had a great time. One dive in particular that I wanted to do, but missed out on for some reason was the Thistlegorm wreck.....its was a supply ship from WW2 that was mistakenly sunk by the gerry's, they were supposed to hit a ship carrying a couple of thousand New Zealand reinforcements. Lucky A Bro? Anyhoo, as I ended up back in London this year I decided to head back out to Sharm for a couple of weeks with my friend Smiley (Sally) and a friend of hers (Verity) she met on some of her travels.....they were going to do the PADI open water course....they loved it by the ... read more

I love it here Sharm is amazingly beautiful. The Red Sea is so clear you can see all the way to the bottom now matter how far out you are. Its crazy to come from Cairo where everyone is extremely religious and covered from head to toe , to Sharm el Sheikh, where there are topless Europeans scattering the beaches and short-shorts and mini skirts wandering the streets. Quading in the desert was amazing. There is a part of the desert where everything echos for miles and everyone was shouting out eachothers names. They all died laughing when Tito told them my name was Shib Shib (slippers in arabic) we then had a bbq in tents under the star filled sky in the middle of the desert, it was by far the best food i've ... read more
