Day 219 After some tearful farewells and chaotic cleaning and packing (After a fuse blew on our final night, meaning most of the cleaning and packing was left to the morning). We passed the inspection and we loaded up Vicky's car who had kindly offered to store our stuff whilst we set off traveling around Africa and dropped us at the bus station (lifesaver!). We caught the bus to London and stayed the Russ Hill Motel near Gatwick for our 9am departure the next morning. Day 220 In true form we found ourselves at the wrong gate hence we enjoyed a quick sprint to our correct gate minutes before closing. We arrived in Sharm el Sheik five hours later only to realise that we'd (ok.. Carly) had forgotten to write down the name of the motel ... read more

ÄGYPTEN, 13. - 21. Um... read more

On the 20th of October and our second last day we put our selves to bed early. Our big overnight trip to St Catherine's and Moses Mountain was planned for that night. We were to be picked up at 10.30pm for a 3 hour coach trip to St Catherine's, when we were to climb the mountain (another 3 hours) and watch the sunrise from the peak, and then climb back down to enjoy breakfast before exploring St. Catherine's Monastery. As you may be able to gather from the expectant tone of my first paragraph this was the plan but not the reality. I got a call about 7pm to tell me the trip had been cancelled. I don't think I can express to you here just how that made me feel. The Sinai Mountains, Moses's Mountain ... read more

Our program for our last week has been just the right combination of activity and relaxation. We are located at Naama Bay which has - yep you guessed it - a beautiful bay and a lovely walk all the way around it, where restaurants and shopping abound. There is almost no reason to leave the immediate vacinity; except that a car/bus can be organised to take you from your hotel to anywhere you want to go. Here's what we've been up to... We spent the first full day just kicking back and enjoying the pool - Holly was very keen to do absolutely nothing and appeared slightly resentful that I had booked so many excursions the day before. As it has worked out though, everything has been fabulous and never too taxing. We took a boat ... read more

Our hotel in the Garden District of Cairo is the Shepheard - very centrally located and on the Nile. On our first venture out we discover just how close we are to the Egyptian Museum and the bus depot (about 15 minutes walking) where we will meet some of our tour friends for one last afternoon together at the Museum. Crossing roads in Cairo is something akin to Russian roulette and not for the faint hearted. Holly and I soon learn the "rhythm" of movement required but still happily accept the help of the tourist police when crossing some of the main roads (these would be 6 or 7 lanes if we were anywhere but Egypt!). On Friday (10th Oct) feeling emboldened by our trip out the day before, we head out on foot again for ... read more

What can I say about Sharm El Sheik? It is an oasis of western-style comfort. The whole town is like a movie set transported to Egypt from Hollywood. The palm trees, flashy resorts, picture perfect poolsides, and manicured landscaping are replicated everywhere. Resorts rub shoulders with each other and vie for space with restaurants all along the boulevarde and boardwalk. The beaches, full of colourful sun lounges, are dotted with beach umbrellas, each slotted into a low table on which to rest your cocktail. Helpful staff in crisp uniforms attend to your needs. The resorts slide into the edge of town which has been made into one large pedestrian mall and the space holds all manner of shops appealing to the tourist: carpets and rugs, sculptures of alabaster (or sometimes plaster masquerading as alabaster), miniature pyramids, ... read more

Last night, after our previous post, we "sailed" in a felucca around the Nile near Luxor. However, there was no wind, so our trip consisted of being towed upriver by a motor boat and drifting back down the Nile to the hotel. It was still a nice trip because we got to see the sunset over the mountains on the West Bank where the valleys of the kings and queens are located. We also got to see the charred hull of a cruise ship just like ours (there are about 400 such "flotels") that had completely burned about three weeks ago. Luckily, no one was hurt. While we were "sailing", we noticed a dark cloud of smoke back toward central Luxor on the East Bank where the cruise ships dock. Our felucca captain said it was ... read more
