On the morning of the 19th we were effectively becalmed and mired in thick smog/fog/mist. We could see dozens of ships at anchor on the outskirts of Alexandra harbour: the crew dropped the sails and started winding the way through to the unseen harbour. On this ship you often don't know what to do first even though it is small. In this case participate in Tai Chi, enjoy another huge breakfast, listen to the historical commentary about the famous library or lighthouse of Alexandria, or watch the crew deal with the pilot and ubiquitous tugs - Greg took the tugs, Catherine took the Tai Chi. Finally into the harbour which was pretty decrepit. There were actually half-submerged hulks to one side and we wondered what mooring fees must be :). There was no mistaking our arrival ... read more

To ensure Erin took it easy, we got sent to Alexandria for 5 days, timed so that we would make it back before the "Little Feast" at the end of Ramadan. With its beaches and plentiful sea breezes, Alexandria is a popular summer holiday destination for Cairenes but we were told that since summer has come to an end, it shouldn't be too busy. Now compared to Cairo, it wasn't busy at all, but it was far busier than we have ever seen it, in the past having visited during early spring. Like Cairo, it seems at times like there are too many people and too many cars, and just walking down the street becomes an exercise. We stayed in a lovely hotel right on the waterfront with a view of the Mediterranean. Outside, the honking ... read more

The final stay in Egypt was in the city of Alexandria. This city was founded by Alexander the Great a long time ago. It has a ton of history and culture. It also has a lot of trash cleaning crews since it is a major tourist destination. Our hotel, The Plaza, provided an wonderful view into the Mediterranean. It also was just a quick cab ride to the old citadel. The citadel over looks the main harbour that was designed by Alexander the Great. The Great Light House has sadly burned down, so we were unable to see it. However, we did get to have dinner at at the sea during sunset. The mixture of floating boats, splashing waves and swimmers and the colours of the sun made for an amazing experience. The other major attraction ... read more

Last Day in Egypt August 3, 2009 Today I slept-in until noon and it was awesome. After lunch, a couple friends and I went to go check out the Alexandria Library. Part of your entrance fee included an hour of free internet so we all jumped on that opportunity and used up every last minute of it. Then we walked around the library for a bit and then headed back to the ship. Our taxi drivers were crazy! There were cars going in every direction and people were driving so fast, it felt like we were on the brink of an accident with every second that passed. It was pretty exciting though. In our cab on the way back, the driver was playing Celine Dion. It’s so bizarre when you’re sitting in a taxi in probably ... read more

I got to have the experience today of visiting the local zoo in the town which I have been living in for the past month...and let me just say - Oh My God! I have never seen such conditions like this in my life! It looks like in its hay day it might have been an okay facility but now it is just run down and awful! It was so awful that I couldnt even bring my self to see the whole zoo and all its animals. The only ones I saw were the lions/tigers and the baboons. Unlike the many zoos that you and I are use to where the lions are keep in large enclosers allowing them to have room to run and walk and hide etc, these lions are kept in cages smaller ... read more

Only 10 more days and I will officially be out of Egypt and on the soil of my second home - Kenya! This week has been so frustrating in the country they like to call Egypt! I have to stop and think sometimes why I am even here. The medical system is soooo backwards it doesnt even make logical sense...for example apparently even though we are a clinic and we are allowed to do surgery and treat animals we are not allowed to have any animals in clinic for more than a couple of days or we risk being shut down by the government division that monitors clinics...I think this might be the stupiest thing I have ever heard in my life. So basically if anything requires treatment for longer than 2 or 3 days we ... read more

Diving to see a ruined site - It’s something different. It gives diving another element and also gives ruined sites a completely new outlook. Removing the sand from a head of a statue, a neck is revealed, soon after a left ear. All of a sudden I’m feeling like an archaeologist. Diving in Alexandria is Egypt’s other lesser-known diving spot. Remember the time when you were at school and you had to learn about the 7 wonders of the world? 6 of them were pretty cool but the 7th one just seemed rather plain. Well that one is here. The Lighthouse of Alexandria stood 152m tall and was built to give a reference point to sailors coming from the Mediterranean. The Egyptian coast lacks hills so it was felt fit to build a lighthouse to help ... read more

I obtained two new roommates 3 days ago, but they are not of the human variety!! They are 2, 15 day old kittens!!! They are probably the cutest things ever... although they are also the loudest things ever as well. They were found in the street abandond by their mother, and require syringe feeding every 2 hrs. They are soooo cute when they try to eat...they actually suck on the syringe and try to get more milk, and they get angry when I take it away to draw up more milk for them. I will try to take some pictures later this evening during feeding time and upload them. I'm lucky that I am unable to take home kittens and animals back to Canada or I would be tempted haha. ... read more

Yesterday was to put it mildly - CRAZY! On thursdays the morn'n vet goes to a different part of town and offers free vet services to working animals (horses & donkeys) who cant come to our clinic because its too far! So yesterday was only the second clinic offered and it was so busy! The first clinic only 6 cases were seen and yesterday we saw 12. There were even more cases than that but some left because they couldnt wait to be treated etc. So next week I think it will be even bigger! I wish I had videos of it because it was just plain crazyness. We were in the middle of a street, kinda like a town square. Cars and trucks etc were driving by, of course they had to clow down to ... read more

So yesterday was a very sad day at our clinic! I woke up to the ringing of my mobile, with a call from the Chairperson askng me to go over to the clinic right away. We had a tiny 8 week old kitten in hospital since I arrived, she had been abandoned on our door step and was covered in ring worm. So the doctors have been treating her for the last week. She still looked as ugly as hell because she lacked most of her hair due to the ring worm but she was fisty and doing great. When I arrived to the clinic she was just laying on her side, her temperature was so cold and she could barely breath. Aparently one of the vet assistants had "force fed" her by syringe that morn'n ... read more
