So people, I think this will be my last blog of the trip since I am flying home in three days! This trip has been anything but un-interesting! I think everytime I come I learn more and more about the ways of the land and how corrupt things are here sometimes!!! I dont think I wrote in the last blog about what has been going on so much other than illness!!! Prior to falling so sick, I was busy overseeing the building of two new homes for 2 of the women in the group. Now, you or I would think it should be simply to claim a small piece of land in a slum and just build.....but nope! thats just not how things go here! First you have to talk to the "village elders". These people ... read more

I have officially become kenyan this weekend! On saturday morn'n a woke up with what I thought was just some aches from the cold and damp weather and by 12 o'clock noon I was so sick I decided to get tested for malaria! The results are in and I do in fact have malaria! Some of you know that I didnt take anti-malarial medication with me this time, the main reason being that the area I am in is considered low risk cause its near nairobi etc. Anyways, I have proven the travel doctor wrong on that!!! So the lesson learned this trip - ALWAYS TAKE ANTI-MALARIA meds!!!!! For those of you who are wondering what exactly malaria is...its a blood parasite transmitted by mosquitos. It results in flu like symptoms but 10 times worse. You ... read more

Well I am happy to write that saturday the main construction of the classroom I fundraised for was completed!!! After all the stress of doing presentations to variable organizations and random estimations on cost of supplies, the structure is now standing and will be fully functioning come september when the students return to class!!!! For those of you who might not know, when I revealed to the ladies at living positive that I would be building a new classroom it brought about a bunch of fundraising efforts of the other volunteers that have been here for a month before me! So with that said we were able to complete 2 full classrooms and a new kitchen!! the compound doesnt even look similar to the old school which many of you have seen pictures of!!! I cant ... read more

Hey all!!! Sorry to keep you all on the edge of your seats about where in the world I am currently!!! I'm finally back "home" in kenya after a tough month in Egypt! The reason for such a long delay between posts was, first, my departure from egypt was anything BUT magical! haha The chairperson in egypt ended up being a complete PSYCHO!!! During our final fight, I decided it was just best to leave and head to kenya where I knew people would love to have me! So on that note, I did a quick tour of the pyramids and the huge market in cairo and jet setted off to Kenya! Even when I set foot off the plane in the wee morn'n hours of August 2nd I knew I was home, the combinations of ... read more

I got to have the experience today of visiting the local zoo in the town which I have been living in for the past month...and let me just say - Oh My God! I have never seen such conditions like this in my life! It looks like in its hay day it might have been an okay facility but now it is just run down and awful! It was so awful that I couldnt even bring my self to see the whole zoo and all its animals. The only ones I saw were the lions/tigers and the baboons. Unlike the many zoos that you and I are use to where the lions are keep in large enclosers allowing them to have room to run and walk and hide etc, these lions are kept in cages smaller ... read more

Only 10 more days and I will officially be out of Egypt and on the soil of my second home - Kenya! This week has been so frustrating in the country they like to call Egypt! I have to stop and think sometimes why I am even here. The medical system is soooo backwards it doesnt even make logical sense...for example apparently even though we are a clinic and we are allowed to do surgery and treat animals we are not allowed to have any animals in clinic for more than a couple of days or we risk being shut down by the government division that monitors clinics...I think this might be the stupiest thing I have ever heard in my life. So basically if anything requires treatment for longer than 2 or 3 days we ... read more

I obtained two new roommates 3 days ago, but they are not of the human variety!! They are 2, 15 day old kittens!!! They are probably the cutest things ever... although they are also the loudest things ever as well. They were found in the street abandond by their mother, and require syringe feeding every 2 hrs. They are soooo cute when they try to eat...they actually suck on the syringe and try to get more milk, and they get angry when I take it away to draw up more milk for them. I will try to take some pictures later this evening during feeding time and upload them. I'm lucky that I am unable to take home kittens and animals back to Canada or I would be tempted haha. ... read more

Yesterday was to put it mildly - CRAZY! On thursdays the morn'n vet goes to a different part of town and offers free vet services to working animals (horses & donkeys) who cant come to our clinic because its too far! So yesterday was only the second clinic offered and it was so busy! The first clinic only 6 cases were seen and yesterday we saw 12. There were even more cases than that but some left because they couldnt wait to be treated etc. So next week I think it will be even bigger! I wish I had videos of it because it was just plain crazyness. We were in the middle of a street, kinda like a town square. Cars and trucks etc were driving by, of course they had to clow down to ... read more

So yesterday was a very sad day at our clinic! I woke up to the ringing of my mobile, with a call from the Chairperson askng me to go over to the clinic right away. We had a tiny 8 week old kitten in hospital since I arrived, she had been abandoned on our door step and was covered in ring worm. So the doctors have been treating her for the last week. She still looked as ugly as hell because she lacked most of her hair due to the ring worm but she was fisty and doing great. When I arrived to the clinic she was just laying on her side, her temperature was so cold and she could barely breath. Aparently one of the vet assistants had "force fed" her by syringe that morn'n ... read more

So the clinic that I am working at it very new and alexandria is very HUGE (i.e. 4 million people) so not a large number of people know of the free clinic yet. So for this reason we are out in the streets working with mostly horses and donkeys that are passing by the clinic on the street pulling carts etc. Some of the drivers dont want to stop because they are unsure what we are going to do to their animals but we've been lucky and most of the ones stopped the last few days have been great! Their is an extreme lack of common sense among many of the workers in the sense that they dont realize that you should treat animal before it gets too ill! They normally wait until the animal can ... read more
