Most beautiful city?

Most beautiful city?
17 years ago, May 3rd 2006 No: 61 Msg: #5484
I would also say Cape Town, South Africa, is the one I have been to that I find the most beautiful. San Francisco and Sydney are nice too, but they lack the mystique and exotic quality of Cape Town - as well as all those mountains in the middle of the city, with 2 different Oceans on its doorstep! As a physical entity Cape Town is really quite stunning, and far more so than any other city I have ever been.

Cybercaps, Annecy looks beautiful. I have not been there and would like to. It looks very small though - more like a town than a city and so I don't know if it should count here. If we are having a most beautiful town discussion as well, I would say Oxford (my alma mater) and Cambridge must both rank highly.

The most beautiful city, for me, is Cape Town.

There is no such thing as "most beautiful city".

It's all in the eye of the beholder and an individuals perspective.

It's all relative.

They're all beautiful.

Enjoy beauty wherever you find it. It's everywhere! ;-)

I absolutely deny your claim of there being nor 'most beautiful city' a city is judged by its people, its scenery, its price and its perspective among a ide range of people,

From this blog, I think that Cape Town seems to be the top choice and therefore i think it should be named MOST BEAUTIFUL CITY by the members of this blog.

It is the most beautiful city in the world, it has nearly two contradicting scenery, The lovely mountains and the Beautiful golden beaches with blue waters, there n where in the world where this kind of beauty can be seen. You could be a fool not to go there!

The original posters question was:

What do you think is the most beautiful city in the world?

It's not something to vote on, or that as a website we're voting on, it is simply a question posed by a member that wanted to see who thought what... many people have a city, or cities that they find most beautiful themselves... so in each respondants answer, there is truth in their own hearts and minds.

So just to clarify, we as a site are not naming any city more beautiful than any other... as travellers, we each find beauty in much of what we see, but each hold a special place in our hearts for the ones that captivated us the most in their own way.

Thank you for the clarification Mr. Savage,

I had no intent on responding to mooo's comment as he/she obviously doesn't understand the question or my response to it. Reply to this

I also don't think one should escape the fact that it is subjective. That is more or less undeniable. I also agree wholeheartedly with the sentiment that one should enjoy beauty wherever one finds it (Cool travelers). Surely that's a lot of what makes travel amazing? Simply deciding on 'one most beautiful' stops dialogue - and I think posting our opinions is useful as we can share ideas and experiences. Cape Town is the one I would vite for - but that certainly does not mean the discussion ends there! I think it's useful for us all to have our say. Reply to this

I am very sorry for what I had said earlier on, it seems that i had put my message across in a very harsh tone, and you may have taken it the wrong way, What i meant was that I think most of the people who replied to this blog thought cape town had was beautiful, i was not trying to imply that it was the 'most' beautiful city in the world, every city has it's own kind of beauty which attracts different sort of people, it is obvious that I had come to a conclusion that it was the most beautiful in term if its natural scenery, which is what i look for in a city, scenery.

Once again, I am very sory for your misunderstanding!

SYDNEY is by far one of the most beautiful cities in the world, it has class, style, beautiful architecture and there is plenty to do. The city boasts a full roller coaster for beauty; it has everything a city needs and more!!

Some others for me would be: Tokyo, NYC, Paris, Cape Town and Hong Kong!!!!

there's different ways to look at this... I would say San Francisco, Cape Town, Rio are very beautiful from a distance, but i don't think at street level they are the most attractive cities. its a cliche, but i think Paris might be the most beautiful from an architectural point of view and from the point of view of a pedestrian walking down the street. The natural setting is unremarkable though. Its impossible to say one city is the most beautiful. Reply to this

WaltB,

I concur with your point of view, well said! I would also concur with your Paris perspective; oui, oui, monsieur - what a lovely city.

Au Revoir!

From the places I have traveled, overall, I would have to say Paris. (NYC, Brussels, Sevilla, and Barcelona are all right behind it.) Reply to this

I have to go with Budapest on that one. There was just something extremely wonderful about that city that I still have not been able to put into words. Perhaps it was the non-westernized architecture, or perhaps it was the feeling that EVERYONE wanted to help us find our way around, even though we didn't speak Hungarian and they didn't speak English. It was just an amazing place, and one I'm anxious to get back to!

It's all in the eye of the "beer-holder" just as some else stated before.

The most beautiful ones I've been to (from a historical and genuineness perspective):

- Prague
- Rome Reply to this

Scott I agree with you completely. My travels have only taken me as far as the main cities in Europe but Budapest definately left a lasting impression on me. I spent a considerable amount of time sat upon Gellert Hill in awe of what a beautiful city it is. I was there in Autumn, and although I am of the opinion most cities look more beautiful in Autumn, Budapest really really did!!! It has some of the most fantastic architecture, and some of my favourite buildings, Fisherman's Bastion and the Parliament building. So much history and I agree again with your sentiment that the people there are just so friendly. I cannot wait to go back there again.

Cape Town, San Francisco, and Rio would have to be at the top of my list. There are though some strange choices here...there is no way I would describe Buenos Aires as a beautiful city. Many of its buildings are run down and the place is full of graffiti. BA does have a vibe, atmosphere or whatever, but that is not the same thing as beauty. Reply to this

Although Singapore is beautiful with it's water, islands, greenery and architecture, I consider it morally wrong to live there, or in Kuala Lumpur with it's surrounding mountains for the same reasons. I've been living in Singapore for three years, and it took me this time to realize that this is a part of the world that should not be developed since it's located in the rain forest belt. No matter how people live their lives here, there's a great impact on it's rich natural environment. The forest is cut down for development of the city, the water is polluted, coral reefs are gone due to land expansion (Think of that next time you visit the Esplanade theater in Singapore) and people and industries are drawn here by it's development and low costs. Due to it's tropical heat and humidity almost every building uses air conditioning year around and almost everyone wants to drive a car, and definitely not getting soaking wet on a bicycle. Although it has beautiful surroundings (It's located in a rain forest archipelago after all) I do not want to support the development and devastation of this part of the world. Hence why I'm moving to Barcelona this summer. A beautiful place where I can have a much lower impact on our dear planet. Reply to this
