I have to say Las Vegas with its neon lights and surreal hotel because you see all other cities in it like Paris, New York, Venice...just look at all the various hotels here at Las Vegas Attractions. You will now see what I mean- you can even see Egypt with its pyramid and Sphinx in Las Vegas!

I think the replies here are far too Western centred... The most beautiful city I have been to by miles is Cape Town (South Africa) - and it together with Rio, Sydney and San Francisco should probably be 4 of the top 5.

Edinburgh is my fav back in the good old UK (which is home). Hong Kong and Vancouver nice, Paris too (though for different reasons).

If you're looking for sheer physical impressiveness and natural beauty - I think cape Town wins hands down. After all - it's built on one of the world's most beautiful natural peninsulas - and it has literally dozens of hills and legitimate mountains that dwarf Arthur's seat, in the middle of city and suburbs. By abolsute far....the most beautiful city in the world is SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA!

And im not the only one saying this....Sydney has been voted the most beautiful city in the world for the last 7 years in a row!

And not only that, it has some of the best living standards of the world. All Australian cities do.

You cannot beat Sydney's beautiful harbour, and spectacular beaches and bays....its amazing!

If i was a millionaire - and could live in one place in the world, it would be SYDNEY!

How do you pick only one?

Sydney. Same thing as the above poster. Awesome architectural feats, nice people, what more could you ask?

Back in the U.S. for a Yank like me:

I've always thought the NYC skyline is really cool. San Francisco also has nice buildings and a lot of striking landmarks. And Chi-town, my HT, has some nice-looking places. Lincoln Park Conservatory has lots of weddings and plant stuff. Reply to this

Id also have to say cape town, if you see these pics you will fall in love, it is not atificially made beautiful, it is naturally beautiful, it is like another world in africa. The African continent is soooo different to south africa. It is the best country in the world. It has gone through so much but it still overcome problems. By far the best!

I would clearly chose Cape Town. Rio is absolutely stunning as well, and probably number two in my book, but it is not set in as striking a natural setting as Cape Town. By continent (alphabetical) I would say:

Africa: Cape Town by lightyears

Asia: Hong Kong

Australia: Sydney

Europe: hmmm... Stockholm? St Petersburg? Venice or Florence perhaps? Many many more! But most are more architecturally beautiful rather than naturally beautiful. Therefore I would say Stockholm, because it has both.

North America: Very close between San Francisco and Vancouver. Weather better in San Fran, Vancouver more natural beauty.

South America: Rio my fav. Buenos Aires and Santiago are nice as well.

Overall in the world: Cape Town - by at least one lightyear! Reply to this

People who say Sydney is the most beautiful harbour city in the world probably haven't been to Cape Town. I think it wins hands down as the most beautiful city in the world.

In my book Rio is also a more beautiful city than Sydney, but I would give the crown to Cape Town - not just because it is the most beautiful, but also, everywhere you look there is living history: Robben Island, the hospital where the world's first heart transport was carried out, the mainland prison where Nelson Mandela was encarcerated..... I think its a matter of choice, between Sydney, Cape Town and Rio ... as the above poster has mentioned that his preference is with Cape Town.

My preference is with Sydney. I think Sydney is possibly better than the two, because what makes a city is not only is its surrounding - but its people.

I have been to all three cities, and Sydney is definately the most welcoming by a long shot. South Africans are very welcoming people, please do not get me wrong, but i just remember the warm feeling i received in Sydney a lot more. (i got mugged on three occasions in Rio, and my friend got threatened with a pocket knife).

Sydney also has a lot more class, more of a prestige so to speak and is its architecture is astounding! In terms of it being a modern city compared to the other two, it wins hand down! Also, Sydney is definately more of a World City than both Cape Town and Rio. Sydney would by far have a greater standard of living also, which i believe accounts for a lot when visiting a city (public transport, safety. etc)

Also, the beaches in Sydney are to die for! Copacabana in Rio - really didnt take my fancy, it was too built and too busy, also extremely dangerous - however Brazil is a very beautiful country with a very beautiful coastline. Cape Towns beaches in the southern precinct of the city, really are beautiful, but the beaches in Sydney are a lot more naturally conserved and there is a lot more beaches on the coastline of Sydney then both Rio and Cape Town. Also the water in Cape Town was quite cold in the summer months.

Also, Sydney has mountains like Cape Town and Rio - the area is infact world heritage listed....the blue mountains.

This is definately why Sydney has been voted the most beautiful city in the world for the last 7 years straight.

I may be of little bias, as my brother is a resident of Sydney.....but my best friend is also a resident in South Africa. So I think my opinion is on an equal footing. Also, i notice a little bit of a rivalry the South Africans have with Australians. Perhaps, this is why some posts have been keen to shut down Sydney, and claim Cape Town as a favourite.

I would say Valletta, Malta's capital - very few buildings are less than 300 years old. It's a pure example of baroque art, fortified all round. There's a 360 degrees tour and some photos of it on www.bellamalta.com Reply to this

I am British and I definitely find Cape Town much more beautiful than Sydney (I also find Rio somewhat lovelier than Sydney too).

I don't think you can compare Sydney's mountains to Cape Town's or Rio's because the Blues are 60km to the west of the city and are not very obvious when you are inside Sydney. That's just not the same as mountains within the city and both Rio and Cape Town have dozens of mountains within their city limits, and indeed surrounding their main buildings. If you are allowed to count mountains 60 kilometres away, you would have to add at least three different ranges of mountains to Cape Town's tally. But I think for this discussion what is relevant is surely the mountains in the city, not kilometres away from it. That's what makes Rio and Cape Town stunning.

However, I do agree that people in Sydney are perhaps the friendliest of these three cities, though I find South Africans very friendly as well. Cape Town definitely has the most beautiful of the beaches, with absolutely white sand and mountain peaks rising above them wherever you go. People also only focus on Cape Town's main beaches like Camps Bay and Clifton, and so they don't think the city has that many beaches. In fact it's beaches measure 150km officially! HOWEVER, it is true that Cape Town is the least swimmable of all three because the water is cold. I think Sydney's water is the most swimmable of the 3 temperature-wise. I also agree that architecurally Sydney is probably the nicest of those three cities, with Cape Town second and some areas of Rio not great. But I don't think that is especially relevant either. If you are looking at beautiful buildings - those are not the cities to go to! European cities - example Paris or Rome - are surely in a different architectural league? While Sydney, Cape Town and Rio have nice buildings - it is far more their setting that makes them lovely and worth talking about.

Sydney is very beautiful, but I would put it in the second tier of beautiful cities along with San Francisco, Vancouver, Paris, Hong Kong etc. In the very top tier of beauty I would put Rio, Rome and Cape Town - with Cape Town being my absolute favourite because of it being set in such a beautiful natural place. I personally find Cape Town the most beautiful city.

Hmm, yes Tokyo is undeniably impressive if not that beautiful - I definitely intend on going back.

Florence must be my favourite - so much art and history in such a small place, and all those beatifully turned out Italians 😊

Siena and Verona too.
