Lindsay has gone to meet up with Mariu to attend a Justice and Penalty class at the Universidad de Buenos Aires, (UBA); I admire her academic perseverance on such a lovely sunny afternoon. This morning we had our Political Science class, we discussed the transformations from military dictatorships to democracy in Argentina, Brazil and Chile. After, we had Literature as a Mirror of Social Change; we continued our discussion of Roberto Arlt's The Seven Madmen, a revolutionary existentialist masterpiece by an Argentina author. Following our morning classes we had a much needed cafe con leche (latte) and some medialunas (croissants). We took the #42 bus to the train station and then walked a few blocks to the GreenPeace office. We are going to do some volunteering there with some of their current campaigns. The building is ... read more

Tingo Maria might be the capital of coca growing but a gringo can still walk down the street safely without being offered any white powder. After staying in the lovely city of Huañuco for two days it was time to make my way, 6 hrs by car, to Tingo Maria by means of a collectivo (shared car: s.45) The nice thing about taking the road less traveled is I get to visit with the real Peru...such nice people: relaxed, helpful, and friendly. Unlike the furious fast frantic city of Lima. The ride to Tingo Maria took about 2 hours and was quite the adventure. The roads were unfinished and very bumpy and I didn't enjoy banging my head against the window. But after awhile the body gets used to it (or goes numb)... We were all ... read more

My last hours in Cuzco before I head out to the highland hills of the Andes. Tomorrow - the Inca Trail! Yes, I start my next adventure here tomorrow at the crack of dawn - I am getting picked up at the school at about 4:30 AM by the tour operators. Yikes! I´m sure walking the paths in the Andes will wake me up though. We will have two difficult days of hiking up to 13,000 feet, and then two days of knee breaking downhill on the way to Macchu Picchu. I am feeling much much better, although walking up the stairs still leaves me out of breath. I caved in and got a porter to carry my things because all the others in my group chose this option, it helps provide work to local porters, ... read more

South America » Bolivia » La Paz Department » La Paz April 27th 2006

Well, out of the things you ought to do once in your life, chartering a plane has got to be up there. And if you´re going to do it, then you may as well do it in a cheap country like Bolivia. Which appears to be what we´ve just done with two friends. After two days aclimitizing in La Paz and taking it easy reacquainting ourselves with friends from various parts of our trip, we all endevoured to get up early and book a jungle trip this morning, before planning to head to Tiahuanacu to explore the ancient ruins. At 4pm, after much fruitless wandering and repetitive conversations with airline staff and travel agents, we cracked and decided that charting a plane for a mere 10 dollars extra each was a far better option than a ... read more

I´m super excited at the prospect of settling here in Cusco for a week or two. WE´ve found a great hostel with this open air rooftop sitting area that looks out onto the whole city it´s just perrrrrfect and for only 12soles a night (approx $5AUD) yeeeeharrrr. It´s definitely a tourist city. It´s hard to find the middle ground between wanting to avoid all the other tourists along the gringo trail, and the relief and comfort felt by being able to find and order a good (and more likely less tummy-churning) meal from an English menu. AFter the tummy turning nightmare of Huaraz, I can say that I can deal with seeing a bunch of other tourists around the place. Lots of cute little stone-cobbled alleyways and funky little cafes and market stalls etc. Yesterday was ... read more

South America » Argentina » Mendoza » Mendoza April 26th 2006

well after 3 very enjoyable but highly jet lagged days, I have left Buenos Aires to travel around. As it turns out, I have been so impressed with BA that I have decided to return a little earlier to spend 4 days or so there at the end of my trip. I am now in Mendoza which so far I must admit looks pretty ordinary, and apparently is not very exciting. Tomorrow however, I depart in the morning by bus to Santiago via a rather spoectacular trip over the Andes. Bring it on! ... read more

Well what a day - Machu Picchu was awesome! We had a wicked day - I wil let the photos speak for themselves! We decided not to do the Inca Trail - one it was bloody cold at night in Cuzco and our sleeping bags wouldnt have been up to it but the other reason was that the trail had suffered several major mudslides. Fortuantely we ran into some kiwis who had told us this and so we decided to flag it as you werent able to walk into the ruins - you had to walk into Agua Calientes (the town nearest Mchu Picchu) and catch the bus up just like everyone else - defeating the purpose really after hammering yourself for 4 days! The tours groups were not telling people this until they had paid ... read more

South America » Bolivia » Chuquisaca Department » Sucre April 26th 2006

I arrived in Sucre, Bolivian capital, hoping to spend about ten days trying to improve my Spanish. 3 and a half weeks later - the last two of which has been spent living with a Bolivian family - I am finally packing up my bags and moving on. My time here has been fantastic. The language school has helped improve my Spanish immensely, and living with "mi familia Boliviana" has been a new and fascinating experience, as its allowed me to view a side of Bolivian life not normally accessible to tourists. I started off my time in Sucre in a backpackers, where I met a good bunch of Brits, Aussies and Kiwis who were all studying Spanish. We had a one cool night out when we went to see a Bolivian Nirvana tribute band. They ... read more

South America » Peru » Ica » Nazca » Nazca Lines April 26th 2006

Well, I have had a rather rough couple days since we left the trail and at times have wished for the comfort that only altitude sickness can bring. Currently, we are in Nazca to view the famous (or infamous?) Nazca Lines. Nobody really knows what they are or were for but everyone has a guess, from an astronomical calender to alien landing site. My opinion? It was just boring in Nazca, so they wanted something to do. That was our opinion last night, and it seems applicable if you assume the lines did not exist. So, Lima was little to no fun for me. We arrived at the bus station on time, full of food from our big lunch and ready for the long, curvy ride back to the big city. My food, unfortunately, would not ... read more
