South America » Chile » Santiago Region » Santiago April 26th 2006

Well, we are currently in the Lan Chile VIP room at Santiago airport. As we are stuck at this airport for 8 hours until our onward flight to Lima, we decided to live it up a little. Internet, comfy chairs and all the alcohol and nibblies you can eat! We are sitting opposite the buffet and some dodgy old man keeps filling his bags with packets and packets of peanuts and tea satchets. He must have 50 packets of peanuts in there by now... too funny. The flight to Santiago was....LONG! I watched 4 movies - all equally bad. I also won a million dollars on the in-flight entertainment systems version of "Who wants to be a millionaire". First impression of South America is all the people speaking spanish. It may sound dumb but I wasn´t ... read more

South America » Bolivia » Chuquisaca Department » Sucre April 26th 2006

We are now in Sucre, very different to Potosi, much more affluent and easier! Also the altitude is that little bit less which means we are less exhausted. The mine tour yesterday was definately an experience, although not one that I am in any hurry to repeat! We got kitted up in our gear, waterproof over clothes, helmets and head torches, then went to the miners market to buy presents to take to the miners. Then visited the processing plants where they extract the minerals from the rocks. Their technology is non-existent, consisting of a big grinder to break up the rocks then some very dodgy flotation tanks, barrels cut in half! They have no money for smelting eqipment here so the silver they do extract, which is only about 4%, gets shipped to america and ... read more

Thought I´d get around to uploading some photos here. I prefer not to take my camera with me when I travel about because it´s something less to worry about - what you don´t have, no one can take. But here´s a sampling.... read more

South America » Brazil » Minas Gerais » Belo Horizonte April 25th 2006

I had the opportunity today to visit some of the neighborhoods where the "projects" are located. These two sites are administered by the people I'm staying with - one site is a previous "favela" (brazilian slum), the other is a neighborhood of originally 10 houses constructed through Habitat for Humanity which has now grown into a full size working class neighborhood. Brazil appears to have two seperate worlds, a middle class and a working class. Most of the area within the centers of the city are apartments of middle class people; the surrounding area are neighborhoods of the working class. These neighborhoods on first sight are probably what most people abroad would consider slums from the patchwork appearance (they aren't, the real slums of Brazil are squatters homes pieced together from scrap wood and metal and ... read more

Hola friends and family! Today is my Dad´s birthday. Happy birthday dad! It´s Tuesday, my fourth day of travel, and it feels like I´ve been here forever! I am doing well, and I really love it here in this magical town, ancient capital of the Incas. I am enjoying myself, going to classes in the morning for the past two days, and exploring in the afternoon. The town has a beautiful plaza in the middle lined with cathedrals, a few main streets, and narrow streets that wind around the hills surrounding the square. This main area is all pretty small, and impossible to get lost in, and therefore very fun to walk around. Yesterday, I wandered up to the San Blas district, where the artisans are, a very hilly part of town with narrow streets lined ... read more

Executive Summary: (3/18 - 4/1)Sarah and I made a quick trip by bus up through Chile, with a key stop for Pisco Sours and starwatching in Vicuña. After that was San Pedro de Atacamba where we ¨learned¨sandboarding. Our wanderings through Bolivia took us across the Salar de Uyuni (surreal and beautiful) and the Bolivian high plains to Uyuni. We survived a bus that caught on fire on the way to Sucre, a bike ride down ¨the world´s most dangerous road,¨ and the craziness of La Paz before a restful time in Copacabana on the shores of Lake Titicaca. Vicuña, Chile-- pisco and the southern stars After Sarah and I left by bus from Mendoza, Argentina, we made quick stops in Los Vilos (laid back resort town on the coast) and La Serena, Chile, before a quick ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Buenos Aires April 25th 2006

Well I can honestly say that I have never been this sore before in my entire life, or tired for that matter. Sunday I began training, and training hard. I figure if I only have about three weeks here I need to get in shape as quickly as possible. This means that I have been running every day on top of bike riding in the gym and lifting weights. When you factor in how long it has been since I have done any of the aforementioned activities you get one sore Ryan...I would kill for a massage and, or a hot tub. . I am getting to know the people at my gym, who unfortunately seem to want to talk more than lift weights and I am beginning to get a good feel of the area. ... read more

South America » Peru » Ica » Nazca April 25th 2006

Had a two hour drive to Nasca this morning from Huacachina in a taxi of sorts, an older model american car with a diesel engine. Did a 30 minute flight over the Nasca lines, the air was clear and we had really good views of everything and thanks to Gravol no little baggies full. The worst part was staying awake after with the temperature past 30degC and the Gravol. Later in the afternoon we went to see a pre inca cemetary, more bones! Also checked out a artesinal miners refinery and a traditional pottery place.... read more

Last we wrote we were in Salta eating steak for Easter. We have since travelled further south in Argentina and tomorrow will make our way to Chile, (Vina del Mar) to spend some time on the beach! After a beautiful busride from Salta we ended up in Cafayate, a cute little town surrounded by wineries. Our plan was to do some wine tours and relax for a bit, and that we did. The town itself is kinda like Perth, quiet and relaxed, with a few less retired people. Here we engaged in tasting as much wine as possible during the wine tours around town. We also walked 1.5 km to get to a cheese factory only to find out we could taste 2 pieces of cheese each before walking 1.5 km back to town. The thing ... read more
