South America » Ecuador April 25th 2006

Hello from Santo Domingo, Ecuador’s largest town without any particular attractions, apart from speedy internet access and Supermaxi (Ecuador’s equivalent of Tesco, and surprisingly similar). Ecuador is such a country of contrasts that it wouldn’t be complete without somewhere that can only boast vistas of half-finished concrete houses, pot-hole ridden roads, streets teeming with people and cars, and the odd lonely palm tree feeling sorry for himself on a street corner. In fact, there’s not a cloud forest, rainforest, volcano or beach in sight, which means there’s a distinct lack of tourists here. If you want to see the everyday goings on of an average Ecuadorian town, without gringo ‘attractions’ this is the place to be. You too can sit for hours in a chair on the pavement and chat with the friendly locals that pass ... read more

South America » Peru » Arequipa » Colca Canyon April 24th 2006

As we continue our travels around South America we realize with delight that we have no set plan other than to revive our creative ability. That so while in Arequipa we were informed of a 2 night - 3 day trek into and back out again of COLCA CANYON. For more information on Colca Canyon see Colca Canyon, Peru We had been staying at La Posada del Parque and it conveniently has a travel agency on the terrace, very handy, helpful and friendly people. Maribel set us up through the agency aptly named Marlon's travel after her brother, you guessed it, Marlon. We had spent 4 nights at La Posada del Parque and the family began saying how much we must like Arequipa which we both did, very much. Seems most travellers are there for a ... read more

Well, we have all returned from our 8 day hike in the Cordillera Blanca and were not at all disappointed by the last second change in plans to this hike. In fact, the landslide blocking the Cordillera Huayhuash was likely a blessing in disguise. For the parents, we are currently all in relatively good health, though Jill did not feel her best earlier today. For tomorrow, we are on to the big city of Lima once again, as we make our way to Cusco by way of Nasca. On to the entry! We woke early to wait by the curb for our guide. The destination: the Cedros, or Alpamayo, Circuit. We were expecting him to arrive around 7 am in a red car, but the car could be variable since the plans had changed without discussing ... read more

The flight to Santa Cruz was great...if indirect. We made a scheduled stop in La Paz to pick up a few folk along the way, which meant we had a wonderful chance to see the fantastic scenery in the area...from the high Andean peaks above the city to the phenomenal Altiplano extending out from the great step upon which the City sits all the way to Lake Titicaca...certainly one of the great airport approaches of the world. We were to be staying with a friend of Laura´s dad, Charlie , who moved here some time ago for a new life...the irony of the name in what is widely regarded as the Cocaine capital of South America was not lost on us. Unfortunately, we hadn´t figured on there being two airports in the city....he went to the ... read more

It was one of the most wonderful trips I have taken so far, the most difficult hike, part of it because I was not in a very good shape. But otherwise also a very fun trip. If I get a chance, I would definately do this again, but its a short life and that is not going to happen. But I am not going to write a lot here. I wrote my diary while on the trip, something new I tried. And memories are fading now, names are slipping. So here are some anecdotes. The hostel where we stayed in Cusco : Samay Wasi http://www.samaywasiperu.com/ I picked this hotel because the name was very Indian, time resident or something like that. The hostel was ok, no complains, nothing special also. Though the bed was really small, ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Buenos Aires April 24th 2006

I´ve spent in Buenos Aires 3 weeks, not because you really need so much time to see all the main attractions the city has to offer, but just because I had such a great time there. In the middle I'd left for Iguazu, only to return a few days latter, because I've felt I hadn't exhausted Buenos yet, but Iguazu is a totally different story. Actually Buenos Aires is a huge city, with population of 3 million in the city itself, and around 12 million in the metropolitan, and when I first arrived to Buenos I was astonished by its size - we went on a highway for about 40 minutes from the outskirts of the city till its center. But all the attractions are conveniently concentrated in its center, so you don't have to travel ... read more

He stopped like a bird dog on the prowl. His left leg frozen in a bent, half-way-there position. His ears perked and his head cocked slightly to the side. We had learned after days of following him though the jungle that whatever movement he made, we were to do the same, and so, we froze. For three days we followed our fearless Amazon leader, Orlando, like children playing a game of “Follow the Leader”. If one of us failed to do as Orlando, we were in a very grown-up way, considered to be “out”…out of luck that is. We followed this stranger as if we had known and trusted him for years, fully aware that if he were to leave our side, we would be lost for a long, long, time. Knowing what we wanted to ... read more
